Stupid question of the year or brain fail

Insert a stereo instrument track using a soft synth such as AD2 and split it.
Assign a controller to the MIDI track track and play (it should work).
What use is the volume fader on the MIDI channel now as it doesn't seem to do anything? (I generally happily leave it at 101).
