Bass VST
I am trying a few bass vsts but I'm not liking them, a little too vanilla. I have the Sansamp clone and TSE BOD. I also can't seem to find a simple compressor vst. I am thinking I need to get Ampeg SVX, but thought I would check here first. I am a bassist and I usually choose Ampeg for modelling. Either the B15 or SVT. If I can find one without haveing to shell out 100 bucks, it would be cool. Tx

I love Trillian and use it for all my bass, but it is NOT cheap. As for compressors, I just went through a big shootout and settled on Waves H-Compressor. I'm not sure I would call it simple but it doesn't have a lot of weird extras you don't expect to see on a compressor and it sounds amazing. The Sonitus compressor that comes w/ Sonar is excellent too.

I've not used it myself, but IKM's SVX gets very good reviews and seems to be the top choice. But yeh, it's a hundred bucks. You might try the Studio Devil VBA, which has two versions, one for $99 (2 channels) and the other for $69 (one channel). For free there's the TSE BOD, which I have used and, well, it's worth every penny. If you have Guitar Rig or GR LE, there are bass amps in there, and if you've already got it you might as well give that a try.

you could also check out Ignite amps SHB-1 it is free, and you can couple that with some bass cab impulses from Rosen Digital, which are not free, but only $8 a pop, which can give you some decent sounds http://www.igniteamps.com/en/audio-plug-ins(also grab NadIR from there to load the cab impulses) http://www.rosen.digital/ +1 for GK2, it can also be quite good, depending on what you are after, Studio Devil stuff is not to bad, I have all their stuff, but never use it anymore because I have stuff which is IMO better, but it's still good.

Personally I use one of the Scarbee bass libraries in Kontakt and process the raw bass sound in Overloud Mark Studio. The number of amps, cabinets, microphones and effects gives me the sound I'm looking for every time. The Cakewalk store has it for $99 right now so it meets your price point too!

If you're a bass player and you have a bass guitar would you not be better buying something like line 6's Pod X3? Okay, the Pod X3 is quite out of date now but it has a great selection of bass amp sims, I do all my bass live via the Pod X3 and get really excellent results, far better than a vst ever could. There are probably other options in hardware I'm not aware of but that's what I use. Steve

Ampeg SVX is very good, but you can get pretty close to that "sound" if you have a good capture of your bass and then use some judicious compression, EQ and a touch of distortion/saturation. The most important thing is that the original bass recording is clean, all of the frequencies are there and there are no impedence issues. The Sansamp should help with that, but you might want to try using a Radial DI. Regards, Dan

The Zoom B3 (bass multi-FX pedal) has some really nice models in it. The Bassman is particularly nice! Otherwise, checkout the new SCR-DI from Ampeg. It's more than you're looking to pay (~$200), but you'd get that Ampeg sound quick/easy. If you have access to a Kemper Profiling Amp, I created a bunch of profiles of an Ampeg VB4 (tube head) into an SVT-410HLF cab. I could upload them for you to download/use. The Kemper is expensive... but once you factor in how easy it is to record great sounding guitar/bass, it's worth it.

Everything in IK's SVX is available in their AmpliTube Custom Shop app, which allows you to try out each model for a short time and just buy the ones you like, or the whole SVX package (cheaper that way). http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/amplitubecs/ I also like their Orange AD 200 bass amp model.

As fortune would have it, I used Bass Setup 2 and my singer songwriter buddy John loves the tone......and the bass line I put down to his first tune we're recording. It's a ballady thing, but he's mostly a rocker, so I am still looking for that Ampeg tone for uptempo stuff(SVT & 8x10 or 2x15). I didn't think of using hardware. I do have a MS-60B laying around... I would rather re-amp than have to drag it out every time I want to do a take. Thought about it some more, and I have a Sonic Port and a THR-10C. Not hurting for hardware bass tones at all. I am a noob at engineering/recording, so I rely on tutorial videos... A TON of holes in my knowledge base! Groove 3 is my tutor.

If it's good enough for Geddy Lee and Paul McCartney, why fight it. Once you get the sound right add a little ambience and you should be there.

I have three of the four Native Instruments Scarbee basses: Jay Bass (Fender Jazz Bass), P Bass (Fender Precision Bass), and Rick Bass (Rickenbacker 4003). I love all three. For my style, I use J bass about most of the time, and the Rick when the bass really needs to cut through. I am using the Precision Bass on my current track because I wanted something that laid in the track better than the Rick but was still more aggressive than a Jazz Bass. If all I had were the J or P, I could cut almost anything in the rock or country field. The Rick's stereo feature is awesome and there are presets that cover a lot of territory in the rock world. I will be using it on a number of tracks on my new album (which is more neo-Hippie-rock oriented). The P bass is one Kontakt instrument. Jay Bass comes with a normal and a slap instrument. The Rick comes with a normal and a palm mute instrument. Note that Craig's Gibson EB5 Bass for Dimension Pro will also handle almost any bass task. It is extremely well-done and available from the Cakewalk store. The only reason I don't use it more is just because I got in the habit (rut) of using the Scarbees and I am very comfortable with Kontakt. All of these are very reasonably priced.
