Vocals up please! I get that you are going for reverb and delay swamp ( I like the delay on the vocal).

There we go, vocals come up nicely with the acoustic guitar!

I Like how the melody fits over the chords. Pink Floyd watch the hell out!
"Story songs" can be really awful and really boring. Yours is neither!

for your vocal, what delay are you using? Do you have a double instance of it or something? It sounds really sustained and really rich.

nice job, you seem to do consistently good work!

    cheers,

Yes...the intro is meant to be murky and muffled...though I do need to bring out the "on down LLewellen River" part. The double delay for this particular project is Camel Audio's "Camel Space".

My favorite so far, ol' pal. Makes me wanna dust off a flanger. Some more information on the vocal chain, please. The compression is extreme but really good.

I kept expecting some Gilmoure-ish slide guitar to pop in there somewhere. But no problem, the vocals are strong enough to carry the song even if all you'd had was an acoustic guitar for accompaniment.

I might add some spacey strat stuff there towards the end.  This is actually a fairly old track that I'd never put a vocal down on.  If you listen in the third verse you can hear my very first attempt at using the Wavelore Steel Guitar.  Pedestrian...but it works, I think.  The vocal chain is rather extensive...but I'll copy it down and post for you.

    @Bit...OK, the intro vocal is:
    WAVES NLS "Mike" drive 5
WAVES Vocal Rider set to "fast"
    UAD LA2A "Grey" 3 to 1
    SPL VOX Ranger to taste
    D16 Fazortan to taste
    Camel Space "extra voice"
    Eventide Blackhole "transfigured"

    Lead vocal is:
    WAVES NLS "Mike" drive 5
WAVES Vocal Rider set to "fast"
    T-Racks De-Esser "male"
    UAD LA2A "Grey" 3 to 1
WAVES Manny Marroquin EQ to taste
WAVES CLA Vocals male to taste
    M1 Limiter Lite

    Vocal Bus is:
WAVES NLS Bus "Mike" Drive 6
    FabFilter Pro-C "gentle wide mastering"

Hope this helps.  After hearing both the Jenny and Party vocals up on SoundCloud I'll definitely be tweaking both of them a bit and trimming some of the "fat".

Interesting. Just a 3:1 ratio on an opto compressor. Surely that can't account for all the volume flattening I hear. Must be the Vocal Rider?

Yup...You're probably right.  And I love that little Vocal Rider (and Bass Rider) near to death.  I don't use it on everything but when I need that "flat-phat" sound it works a treat.

PS...don't forget the CLA adds (probably) a fair amount of compression as well...Chris loves it so.

While others hear Pink Floyd, I hear Peter Gabriel.  Regardless, this is a terrific song.  In spite of the vocal tricks, the vocal convincingly carries this tune.  Well done, ol'pal.

I love verb.  Great listen.  Maybe stick the beginning vocal off to a side...or move it around in the beginning, to add more "reason" why it sounds the way it does.  Liked very much how it changed once the song kicked in.
One minor nit might be to change the production "sameness" to it... (bring stuff in/out more to keep things changing) if you're shooting for that length of song.  Keep if from being "straight lined".
Very creative.    oh yeah...love the reverb!  ;-)

I have to say that you always tweak my interest when I see your latest song posted and I am rocked again by the diversity you show in your work. Your mixes are always great and a pleasure to listen to. Exemplary songwriting skills and imaginative arrangements. Accomplished musicianship. Now before your head bursts that sombrero just know that I'm not going to tell you how great "Jenny Girl" is. I just want to comment on your body of work and say that your ability speaks for itself. Its a treat to be pleasantly surprised when I click on you...............Via con Dios amigo......................Ron

oh wow, I love those sweet BGVs!  especially the girl singing - best part of the song, IMO.  but the other BGVs are awesome, too.

I do think the beginning is a little TOO muddy, but that's just my opinion.  the phasey vox for the rest of the song really set the mood of the song.  the melody is "haunting"

the synths in this are really well done!  what did you use for them?

this is excellent all around.  my only crit is about the beginning vox.  otherwise this is simply maaavelous ol pal!

    Hello Mr Riley,

I've not listened to any of your songs before, so this was an enlightening experience.

I thought seven minutes would have been a bit long for a song like this, but after listening to it all, it didn't sound like seven minutes at all.

This was a great song and I'm going to have to get me some more...

    cheers
