Fake "Growling" Sax

Anybody have an idea how to make the cheesy tenor sax patch in Cakewalk TTS-1 growl and snarl the way old-time rock'n'roll horn players did (reference "A Quarter to Three," by Gary U.S. Bonds)? I have tried various overdrives and fuzztones, but they are all too smooth, for want of a better word. I think I need something that "beats" at a lower frequency. I'm not able to buy a better horn sampler right now, or else I would. Thanx!

    The growl comes from humming the same note that you play, same idea as when you hear someone like Rahsaan Roland Kirk of the guy from Jethro Tull, and a lote of funk players get that rough tone from a flute.
     
    I can just about do it on the flute, but not on the sax. The humming is going to interact with how the reed vibrates, rather than just be added to it. Not sure how you do on a TTS, you'd need a second oscillator to interact with the sample would be my guess to start getting something close

    That's not gonna be easy with TTS.
     
    You might want to look at some of the better sample libraries that are horn based to see if they include that sort of thing.

    There's an .sf2 soundfont I had from a few years back which I use for this, and converted it to sfz (may be I even use it as an sf2 in sfz+ - can't remember at the moment). The sound on it's own isn't bad, but if you overlay it (sparingly) onto dim pro's alto sax (forte) then it gives a very good rendition of what you want. I just use it on the occasional hard notes in a passage. I think the soundfont is the one at http://www.sf2midi.com/173-alto-sax-2-sf2/ .. or it may have come with the soundfonts with one of my previous soundblaster cards from the past.

    jdf said it- I'd use a soundfont. I used to use them a lot and recently got back into them, using the SF2 player synth by Fretted Synth... it's REALLY good imo

    You might try this - works pretty well IMO: Play and record the sax part on a kazoo (expressively!). Drag the audio to a MIDI track to create a MIDI file - edit the MIDI file and direct it to TTS (or whatever) - mix the kazoo part underneath the synth part and adjust volume automation to taste
