Customising VST PNG files

Has anyone tried customising VST PNG files. I assume that's how we see them. Seeing my new VKFX within Sonar, I think they jump out in their gold scheme, but not in a good way. I tried a search and found a Thumbnail and a Standin image, the latter being the right size, but contains the knob image. I would have thought being these revolve they would have been blank spaces in the image file, unless the knob just overlays them. But the thing that stands out that makes me think these aren't the files is it e thumbnail is gold, whereas the correctly sized stand in is silver.

Are these image files hidden somehow? I was looking in VSTbitmapCache

Have you looked in the Cakewalk/Shared Utilities/Internal folder for each individual ProChannel plugin. I think each plugin has its own Resource folder, though I'm working off memory, not in front of DAW at the moment.

All I could find was the VST bitmap folder, and it just has the Thumbnail and a Standin and standin PNG files. I tried searching all PNG files on my computer which led me there. This was under Users\Kamikaze\App data\cakewalk\VSTbitmapcache.

If you are able to find or post the eaact location for me to trawl through at a later date, I'd be greatful

Older plugins typically used a static bitmap, which made it easy to change background colors and labels. V-Vocal is one that was easily customizable. When the VST SDK came along it provided a standard method for graphics but it results in hard-coded UIs that can't be modified. Newer plugins tend to use more sophisticated tools such as JUCE, which paint the controls at runtime so end-users can't modify them. A few vendors (Blue Cat, Meldaproduction) let you change visual elements but that capability has to be coded in.

The reason graphics are so unmutable is that it's a challenge for developers to create UIs that are compatible with both Mac and Windows platforms, which each treat graphics very differently. That's one of the reasons JUCE is so popular: it's cross-platform so the programmer needn't worry about whether the knobs will paint correctly on both. Unfortunately, it also means a lot of extra work on the programmer's part to create tools to let users alter the plugins' appearance. The ability to customize VST UIs will likely become even rarer as more and more vendors move to resizable GUIs.

Sorry, I don't have any insight regarding those Overloud plugins specifically. They are pretty ugly, aren't they? I searched the registry looking for any variables that might be tweakable, but all I found was the standard stuff: display name, version numbers.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Thanks for the info, and for the taking the time to search too. It's a shame because I like the Overloud stuff in general, the VKFX look out of place and a little tacky. I was hoping to simple modify the colour to a metalic dark red instead of a sickly gold. It's such a small detail, but when I load stuff up in Sonar, I'm pretty proud of how cool everything looks, and these just stick out on a bad way.

Fortunately, GUI ugliness has no impact on how it sounds. Maybe put on some rose-colored glasses?

Personally, I don't think they are "that" bad! : )

Different? Yes. I think that they were going for that "old school" look.

When they are in the "container". they go together. Maybe a different look for PC would have been better.

Cake had a small system problem, so I didn't get the VST seriel number for the VKFX until yesterday. Just authorised it and it looks so much nicer, the gold is toned down compared Pro Channels faux gold bling
