2 attempts to change my password were made not by me

Last night I received two notices from noreply@cakewalk. One at 1:06 am and another at 1:52 am (central). Obviously, I did not click the links. I did search around here and saw no recent postings of this nature. If some systemic phishing is going on here it is best that everyone is aware of this.

I see no follow up posts were made for this - I am hoping you were able to contact Cakewalk and get this situation resolved?

It sounds pretty scary that someone is out there trying to access sensitive account data - I sure would be a bit concerned and miffed if it were happening to me.

A phone call to their support line on Monday might be a good idea, or maybe sending a Private Message to some of the Cakewalk staff.....

It was a little unsettling. But not that much because my account was in no way compromised. Posting here was my way of shining a bright light in a dark corner. This appears to be limited to me.

My DAW has no antivirus protection; I keep it offline. However, I did not disconnect it after I had installed the Dorchester update. I wonder if I had left myself vulnerable to malfeasance in those hours I had the PC powered up making music while still Ethernet connected. .

If you were not already compromised prior to your Dorchester update, and you did not access the internet - but just had a connection, then you should be fine.  If you were not browsing on the internet and there wasn't already some malware/virus on your system, your computer would not be in a position to be compromised.

I'm tempted to install/run some antivirus. But I'm reluctant to mess with it. It's running perfect.

I guess I didn't explain it very well.

Just because you left your PC hooked up to the internet doesn't mean anything could get in and infect it.  You would have had to also open up a web browser and navigate around the web without virus protection, or downloaded something using FTP, or that sort of thing.

So, you should be fine, unless you keep seeing attempts to log in that aren't yours, in which case I would contact technical support and see if there is something you or they can do about it.

Thanks for explaining that. I wish there was a reputable site where I could learn internet safety with assurance of accuracy.

I think you guys might be overthinking this. Obviously it's disconcerting to get a random email saying someone attempted to reset your password though, so I don't blame you for having concerns! :)

Most likely explanation is that someone filled out the reset form on your behalf. We updated our password reset mechanism recently however, so unless someone has access to your email they cannot actually reset the password.

    The process goes:
Fill out the form to request a password reset email >
Click verification link sent to your email to actually trigger a password reset >
Receive new temporary password in your email >
Log in with new temp password and change to new password

Ultimately if you didn't request the password reset I wouldn't click any links, especially with all of the trickery out there these days. If it keeps becoming a thing definitely let us know.
