Vst Drum Sampler for Sonar [SOLVED]
Hey folks. I have been happily using Toontrax Superior Drummer in Sonar for the last few years, but for my current project I need a vst drum sampler that allows me to load my own kick and snare samples and assign them velocity ranges. Does anyone have a recommendation? Thanks!

I'm pretty sure Battery allows you to use your own samples, although I have never tried it myself...

I have used an earlier version of Battery, and that could import your own samples into it.

If you're up for tweaking even Sonars Session Drummer 3 can use your own samples.

You can use Session Drummer and it is pretty simple to set it up so that each drum sound has multiple sample but you will need to look at the sfz format which is just a file that tell Session Drummer what to play at different velocities etc. Here's an old article by Craig that talks about Session Drummer 2 but the section on sfz is still true: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr07/articles/sonarworkshop_0407.htm You can also use Battery as well and that has an easy UI to help set up the sounds. How much editing of the drum sounds will you need to do?

If you want something that is both an acoustic drum VST and that can also easily load your own samples with multiple velocity layers then the best choice by a long way would be BFD3 if you have the money. If however you only want to load your own samples into some kind of sample player then battery would be cheaper, also in the same price range as battery is fxpansions geist which is a full blown sampler. Doesn't cakewalks "Cyclone" do that too or is it just a, "one hit wonder"? Steve

Battery is probably the easiest solution, but Session Drummer can do that, and really, any sampler will do.

There's a 'limited' demo of BDF3 but you may find that importing samples is either not in the demo or more likely limited to a few velocity layers but as I said, if you're looking for something that does what superior does and much more with better kits then BFD3 is well worth a look at. I would post a link but the forum filter keeps throttling them and I'm sure you know how to use google Steve

Thanks Steve. I used BFD prior to switching to superior drummer. My only reason for switching was that I had fairly frequent stability issues when rendering tracks, which I don't have with superior drummer. That is quite some time, 2 computers and several versions ago though, so I should give it another try. You haven't had any issues with it? Bruce.

I use BFD3 (and BFD2 sometimes) and have never had stability versions with the software. Happy hunting!

I'm late to the party, but I'll add my two cents: I love Battery for this purpose. I use it extensively for remix work. I cut up the original drums and load each piece of kit into a cell, duplicate cells and edit them using the Battery effects and modulation options to create variations on the original, give each variant a velocity range, then trigger away with my MPD18. I also quite like sampling the same drum from different points in a track and then triggering the variants using the round-robin function in Battery. I find i'm using Battery more and more as my go to sampler and completely neglecting Kontakt. Incidentally, to the OP, if you are a Reason fan, Kong (the built-in drum sampler) is dead simple and can load and manipulate user samples.

Kontakt would be an easy, if expensive option. You could probably use the free TX16Wx, neither are dedicates drum samplers but I dont see any issues.

Thanks Glyn! I downloaded TX16WX and had the 122 samples loaded and velocity mapped in an hour. A little tweaking of the trigger types and it is working perfectly. My first ever experience with freeware - what an eye opener! Just goes to show that the price tag is not always indicative of quality and usefulness at either end of the cost scale. Thanks to everyone for the other suggestions too. Bruce.

For what it "seems" you are trying to do, Session Drummer 3 may be simplest, since you can drag/drop samples onto the kit pieces, and limit the velocities on the MIDI track.

What about the old fxpansion Dr008?
It lets you load your own samples into a very extensive multi-layered drum kit...
