Working the Paradigm Shift (original)

Hi folks, new music for 2015:

https://soundcloud.com/prodigalsounds/working-the-paradigm-shift

This will be the opening track of my next album. Recorded entirely with SONAR X3 and finished up with SONAR 2015 PLATINUM.

Cakewalk-related tools would include Dimension Pro strings; all the compressors, reverbs, delays, and EQ would be the Sonitus suite.

Blimey... This takes me back a bit

I hate making comparisons but I'm thinking Yes and ELP for starters. Or IQ perhaps?

This one is probably more The Who meets 80's King Crimson  :-)
But I also use a VST that does a dead ringer imitation of Emerson's GX-1...

yea...i really dug this tune...really grabbed me right out the gate...very nice work and so interesting. Felt a bit of ELP in there...the snare sound isn't really working for me but that's a small nit in a very cool tune.

    loved the lead...

This is one of the best tunes I've heard here for a while.  I got a bit of Rush and KC from this.  In spite of its length, I could have listened all day.  OK, that might be an exaggeration, but I was held captive.

Fantastic.  The KC influence is immediately obvious and then some Yes in the vocal parts.  Love the breaks.

Really excellent song and production. At low level, all is good. At high level, the upper mids are a bit harsh on my side. It might be the syballance and cymbals. When you master, this can be easily handled if you think there is an issue.
The overall presentation is great. You guys have a lot more patience than I with undertaking a song like this.
    Keep up the good work.

70's progressive rock was a truly golden age for all those great arena rock anthems. You had me from the first measure and I'm a real hard sell, and I salute your work. Good production values and great tracks all. I'm really glad there is someone out there tackling the tough stuff.............Go Stickman!...........Ron

Sat back for the 8 min 39 sec experience, the opening riff made me think of Mr Fripp, (Fracture) then the track progressed through the other styles mentioned above.

Sounds nicely balanced and well mixed here.

I get the Pete Townshend style songwriting, plus I'd connect it to Lamb Lies Down a little bit, too! and Rush naturally. By way of Kansas.

Forgetting the fun of comparisons, it's a really good effort on its own. Holy panning, Batman! nicely spread around the stereo stage. I caught the electric guitar delay that trails across to the other side. Very nice.

This song is a seriously good time machine back to 1976? Just a good time, thanks for the excellent effort. Your attention to detail is on full display.

    cheers,

Thanks again guys, I'm really proud of this one and I'm happy others enjoy it.

@Pavlo, the drums were XLN Addictive drums, using a kit from v.1 that I've customized over time to my liking. I couldn't say which preset I started with.
I use a Roland SPD-20 (octopad) to trigger the sounds - I don't use preset midi patterns.

@Rimshot, I tend to agree with you about the high mids - I don't know if this is an artifact of the .ogg compression or the soundcloud processing. I used StudioOne Project page to convert and upload to soundCloud. I've listened to a "normal" CD in various locations - including the car! - and it sounds pretty good, I think, but I may try a few other options for a digital release.

As a long time (decades worth) prog fan this was my kind of song.  Not much to add to the above - it's just a great a mix of influences that you've pulled off really, really well.   Though one band not mentioned so far that I heard bits of was Gentle Giant.    Who cares, love 'em all.

OK, one last thought...  For me this sounds authentic.    'Nuff said.

Hi stickman . . . really enjoyed listening to this one !
. . . and had a good laugh, since my association / comparison  brain immediately went to the band YES, and then the first post response I read (by forum  member "synkrotron") mentioned YES as a possible comparison.

The creativity here is amazing, guitar parts are very well done, and I find the mix is also excellent.

Anyways, don't mean to say that this is clone of YES, it just reminds me of that era with the drum crash shots, lyrical content, and harmony electric guitars . . . though the synth sounds you use really give it a more modern feel than those days of YES. Sounds like you were a big fan of prog rock ?
