If using Per Proj Aud Fldrs will changing Proj Files path in prefs affect old projects?
Sorry for the truncated headline but wanted to get the whole question in. Just reading the manual and it seems to be implying that if I go to Edit > Preferences > File - Folder Locations and change the path (say to a second hardrive) that if I am the using Per Project Audio Folders option that only NEWLY created projects will write and read from that new location. Am I to assume that if I did that all my older projects will continue working properly without screaming at me about missing audio? Would it depend on whether the projects were set up Per Project Audio (as in projects using the Global Audio Folder would get borked but PPAF projects would be fine)? The reason I'm asking is because I have been procrastinating far too long at properly setting up my file paths to make use of my second drive (everything reads/writes from/to the C drive... because I'm a bumblefart). The whole subject of moving crap around, making weird "links" or having things potentially screw up was kind of intimidating me BUT if I can just make it so all my NEW projects have their Project and Audio files on my E drive by just changing that one entry WITHOUT messing up the old projects... well that's a lot easier. I don't care if the old projects stay where they are because they are either done, about to be scrapped or if they are indeed improtant enough moving a couple projects is no big deal. Hopefully scook or some other similarly hyper smart dude and/or dudette can chime in. I should probably have figured this out by now (seems so simple) but I was basing my assumptions around having to actually move everything just to make new projects be set up how I want. Oh and when doing this what all needs to be done? I was going to just create a folder on my E drive (named BeepsCakeProjects or something) and point the Project Files section of Edit > Prefs > File - Folder Locations. Is that enough? I notice an entry in that Prefs window for Wave Files which is currently pointing toward "Cakewalk Content/Audio Library". I'm assuming that's just for samples... not project audio and would not need to be moved for this... right? Thanks.

Beeps, I believe each project maintains the file locations for that project. Changing preferences will apply to new projects. I have changed prefs and Old projects were not affected.

As jatoth says. The cwp uses a relative path for the audio so as long as the project folder structure isn't changed, Sonar doesn't lose track. Making the change is as easy as you described above.

Beep I quite often access old projects from my backup drive with no issue whatsoever. But I have been using PPF's since the dawn of time (or sonar 6 as I called it) Obviously, the audio from the project must be in the relevant Audio Folder or Sonar won't find it. If you want to make doubly sure, open up your old projects, do a "Save As" to your new location and make sure "Copy audio with Project" is ticked. You'll have to do this one at a time.

I move stuff from computer to computer all the time. I have never lost any data. That is mainly because I have always kept the audio folder for each project inside the projects folder. Each project has always had a folder. I originally just did it that way and didn't know about "per project folders" . I managed Sonar files like I managed all my computer files. Folders. And like most software you need to control where stuff is going and not just blindly hit save. If you use Sonars default system you have a mess. I always change the file paths the minute I install a new copy of Sonar. Same as Bristol since Version 6. To me it is mandatory to make full copies of all project files at least once a week if not daily if your working on a clients album. I keep 3 or 4 copies of everything. Storage is cheap.

No need to do that one-x-one process. Project folders can be copy/pasted via file explorer. Entire folder trees can be pruned, grafted, flattened, etc. The key is that each project's files all stay in the same place relative to each other. The only caution is that if a project is in the MRU list when it gets moved, opening via the recent list won't work until a regular open is done in the new location. Specific to Beep's question though, everything will continue to work fine with older projects left in their original locations.

Thanks, guys. Just wanted to double check it worked the way my wee little brain was interpreting it. Now that I think about it I'm guessing that even projects created without PPAF would just reach out to the Global Folder anyway because that was the path defined when the project was created. I think what tripped me up was many moons ago I tried to set up my projects manually by pointing to the E drive in the Audio paths which was all well and good until I went to do a Save As. At that point I would have figured that it would save to the original location defined at the start of the project but what I believe happened was it would revert to the default C drive location (without me noticing). This bended my brain so much that I just started letting everything save where it wanted to. I had tried to force the issue a couple times and ended up screwing up data paths so became very afraid of it all. Anyway... I'm a little smarter now (very little) so this actually makes sense. I don't really intend to actually move any existing projects except maybe the one I'm currently working on. Now I'm kind of thinking that after I change the default path the next time I do a Save As on that project it may want to create a new folder in the new default location and copy all the audio/project files into the new location... which I'm fine with if it doesn't get all weird and whiny. I'll have to see what happens. BTW, I think maybe my BIGGEST problem originally was at first I thought Project files were supposed to stay on the C drive and that the audio was supposed to go on the secondary drive. So attempting separate them using PPAF like that caused issues. Just thinking out loud. If anyone has anything else to tickle my brain bone I'm always interested in hearing people's insight, logic and reasoning. Cheers and thanks again.

Here too...
I move my folders many times fir backup and the likes. Sonar doesn't care where the folder is as long as the audio files are in their proper daughter folder. I can open songs moved to different drives with no adverse effects...
The only thing that is an issue at all is that trying to load from the recent files list will generate an error as that path has been changed. Simply navigating to the folder's location and opening the song file solves the issue.
BTW Beepster... Having your doing/audio files on a separate drive will radically improve your system's performance! You're gonna be very happy you decided to do this!

As the others wrote, use the default per-project folder layout (IOW nested audio folder under cwp) and projects are portable. They don't even need to be in the folder location defined in Preferences. This folder location is the default where the open projects dialog will open. The wave folder is the default for the import/export dialog will open. Since I use the media browser for importing, I set the wave folder to my export folder. In the past it was a good idea to have the "Global Audio Folder" in Preferences > File > Audio Data on the same drive as your projects and the "Picture Folder" on a different drive. Doubt that recommendation has changed.

Hi, scook. Ah... that is one question I forgot to ask. Since I won't be using the Global Audio Folder (because I'm using PPAF) I figured I'd leave it. In the Prefs Audio Data window it is showing that the Picture folder is in the default C drive location. So if I am understanding you correctly, if I leave the Picture folder on the C drive after changing my Project File path that would garner the "best" result? And if I ever decided to move/use the Global Audio Folder (unlikely) then I do NOT want to move the Picture folder as well? Essentially, Projects and Audio on E drive. Picture folder on C. Roight? Thanks.

Beepster Essentially, Projects and Audio on E drive. Picture folder on C. Roight?
Yes. I don't think you will notice a difference unless you are working with very large files. IIRC, there are still some occasions when the global folder is used as a temp directory and having to copy large temp files takes much more time than moving files on the same drive.

Actually I don't mess with the Preference for the "Global Audio Folder", this is a case where I create a directory junction. Either way will work.

This is absolutely golden info. Thank you so much guys. I was kind of understanding it all but these extra insights are really driving it home. And yeah... if the Global folder gets used for temp stuff for whatever reason it makes perfect sense to leave it on C. I guess that is some kind of buffer/cache/preload type thing? Whatevs... I have finished completely ripping apart the manuals for some of my more used plugs and testing things out (although there is always more). Essentially I was spending every day with PDFs open in front of the DAW trying things out. Now I'm going to start keeping the Reference Guide open every day and poking around that to solve some of these oddball mysteries I have not been able to fully figure out yet. Think I'm going to have to go about this a different way. Doing it linearly (from start to finish) is going to lead to far too much duplication of studies (I already know large swaths of the material covered in the RG) so I think I'm going to just open the bugger up every morning and scout the Table of Contents for anything that jumps out at me. The nice thing is that even though a lot of that stuff is obviously geared toward Sonar I learn a ton of more general audio production terms and techniques. First time I tried to read through the entire Ref Guide was with X2 (made it to about page 750) and there was a lot of stuff that I simply did not understand due to lack of experience with the basic concepts behind the functions being discussed (like WHY someone would do those things and what the results are... for example I knew jack bollocks about MIDI back then). Oops. Another long post. Thanks again, doods. Very helpful. Cheers.

Alright... after sleeping on it and reading a little more I wanted to ask another question about another scenario. So my current project is getting a little sluggish as usual due to the massive amount of data involved. Obviously my whole resoning behind wanting to shuffle my data around so it's dispersed across both of my available drives (as opposed to just the C drive which is the current setup) is to get a performance boost. This should be a good, albeit non scientific, test of how much improvement can be had by having/moving my project and audio data onto the second drive. I have been working with this project on and off for... well a very long time, so the lags, quirks etc are apparent and I have some standard tasks that usually cause the lags and general quirks lined up (low latency recording into heavily take lane laden tracks, speed comping, etc). So the idea is to keep working as is for a bit from the C drive so I can really pay attention to the lags and issues. THEN I'll change the default Project Files folder in Preferences so that all new projects and their audio end up on the E drive. Now this is where I would like confirmation of the behavior I sould expect... After changing the default Project Files path in Preferences to the new drive I would do a Save As of the project in question. I would make sure that in the Save As dialog that the Project and Audio paths lead to the new project folder on my second drive. Question 1: By doing a Save As after changing the default Project Files path in Prefs will the project now save to that new location or would that have to be changed manually? Question 2: I am assuming, based on the documentation, that to successfully migrate the entire project using Save As with PPAF selected that I would also have to select the Copy All Audio With Project checkbox selected. Am I on the right path here? Originally I said I didn't care about old projects but this is an "important" and ongoing project that I am very intimate with so if there is indeed a significant boost in performance I will notice it almost immediately. I just don't want to screw it up and waste time (so I'm wasting yours... sorry). Might be useful for others in a similar predicament because honestly this file shuffling is actually confusing and intimidating as frack. I've been at it for over three years with Sonar and the only reason I'm really getting this PPAF procedure now is from digging into the page 1400s section of the manual on a random stab. Cheers, thanks and sorry for being stoopid. :-p

Q1. The default setting really only effects where the file save as location dialog box starts when it opens. Technically you could still navigate to any place you want to put your project.
Q2. Yes. Remember when you do that if there is an audio file in the folder that is no longer referenced by the project it will not be included. It's also a way of cleaning out projects of disused files.
Hope it helps.

Hi, Mike. Indeed it does but I forgot to add something further to the question (sorry). When I do these types of PPAF Save As backups/migrations using the Copy All Audio feature... are Archived Tracks included in the Copy or ignored? I have a lot of Archived Tracks/Clips in this project that I may or may not want to move with it. Thanks.

Yes Beep, Archived tracks are also copied when you do a Save As, with or without PPAF enabled, as long as Copy Audio is checked. Actually I just checked, if PPAF is NOT enabled, you don't get the option to choose Copy Audio with project, it is however still available in the saved project and references the location where it was saved

That's why cwb (Sonar bundles) are pretty much obsolete. Just zip a project folder and you have one container to send to someone/archive. Doing that also allows error correction on the files and you can do CRC checking to make sure the zip you recieved/created is all there. If you worry about such things. Corrected- cwp to cwb, crc to CRC added the words 'archive' and 'created'

I just found a section talking about "Defragmenting a Project". In it it says you can make sure a project's data is all in one place (for quick read times) by saving it as a bundle, unbundling it and then saving it again normally. Most of the system performance improvements section (as well as other parts of the manual) seem to be very old so the Per Project Folders thing may not have been added at the time of writing. I am wondering if perhaps using the Save As/PPAF/Copy All Audio function and saving it to a new place will have the same affect (as in gathering up all the scattered bits of the project on the drive and then saving them in a nice tidy hunk of disk space). Seems like it might but I'm wondering if anyone knows for sure. I find Bundles are a sure fire way to get a project to start acting quirky so I try to avoid them and if the goal is to make a project work BETTER seems like a "1 step forward 2 steps back" type of "fix". The entry appears on page 1462 of the Reference Guide: "Your project file may be excessively fragmented Audio data can be processed most efficiently if it is arranged in consecutive physical locations on your hard drive. During normal SONAR usage, a project's audio data can become fragmented into chunks stored at discontiguous locations on your disk. Accessing these discontiguous chunks can consume extra processing time, which can leadto dropouts. Try defragmenting your project file: 1. Open the project file that has audio problems. 2. Save it as a Cakewalk Bundle (.cwb) file by selecting Save As from the File menu and selecting Cakewalk Bundle from the Save As Type drop-down list and clicking the Save button. 3. Close the project. 4. Open the Cakewalk Bundle you just closedSaving then re-opening the bundle file automatically defragments the audio data used by the project, reducing the chances of a dropout or other audio problem. When you are ready to save the file again, you may want to save it as a normal (.cwp) file. Saving and opening .cwp files takes less time than saving and opening bundle files." Cheers.

The problem with bundles is of course if (for whatever reason) a bundle becomes corrupt, you have lost your entire project with no chance of retrieving it. If a Project file becomes corrupt, you will always have your audio tracks saved as separate files inside the daughter Audio Folder within your project, so a rebuild is always possible. I used a bundle once (long time ago) which did become corrupt and i lost a shed load of editing, so for that reason, I've never used them since.

All that hooey about bundle/unbundle/resave is from the Old Days when scribes had to have the data all together to be able read and write more quickly. A regular defrag of your audio/project drives once in a while should be plenty.

That's actually the entry before the Project Defrag in the Performance section of the manual. Kind of thinking that if I can just "defrag" a project when it starts getting a little quirky by doing a Save As/Copy All Audio action then I save myself a lot of time imaging the drive(s) and defragging up to 1.5TB of drive space. Really the only super intensive thing I do on the system is music related and I only start getting oddities as projects get laden with audio so if just doing the defrag on individual projects will essentially do the same thing on an "As Needed" basis then I can put off full drive defragging for longer. I mean I don't want to have to do a full defrag every time a project starts getting sluggish. It should be noted that I do seriously think most of the issues I have are read/write related because they clear up drastically after I do bulk archiving of clip filled tracks. Of course the whole point of this thread is that I'm going to be hopefully easing up this read/write issue by moving the Project folders to the second drive BUT even then it could be a nice trick to have if I get really crazy on a project and need a performance boost. Also I do intend to eventually attempt doing stuff on a single drive laptop for mobility/portability so if this idea works then it would certainly be one more thing to keep things running reasonably smooth. I just don't know a whole heck of a lot about HDD logic and this will be hard to test (for me anyway). I'm also thinking that to get a true impression of whether moving to the second drive is helping that (if this type of Save As action does indeed act as a defrag) that I'd have to do it on the C drive first, see how the project responds and THEN use that as my "before" impression of how the drive move affects performance. Hopefully that makes sense. Cheers.

When it's time for a drive defrag, I start it before I quit for the day. I always leave my machine on so it's not like I have to wait for a defrag to finish before I can go to bed :) It might help too if you periodically archive away projects that aren't being actively worked to another drive or partition. As to advice in manuals, I'm not sure how often that stuff gets updated. The rare times I've had a project start groaning, I've bounced tracks with lots of clips and/or edits. This has helped a fair amount. YMMV ...

Yeah, I've got a pile of tricks up my sleeves for making a project stand at attention and I don't encountered too many issues as my system is quite powerful. I just figured if Bundles can consolidate disk data in this manner then perhaps a PPAF Save As action could as well. I actually never leave my system on after I'm done and go so far as to turn off the PSU via the power switch AND the turn off the power bar it's hooked up to. Prevents voltage leak (I pay hydro here), keeps my weird ass monitor from magically turning itself on in the middle of the night to a non existent TV channel (SOOOPER LOUD STATIC NOISE) and really let's all the bits and bytes take a nap so they're ready for action the next day (I reboot my gen purpose laptop every night for the same reason... just works better with regular reboots). Less wear on the fans and crud too. Anyway... I guess maybe this is perhaps a tech support question but I'll probably just do it anyway because I really do want to make sure I know EXACTLY what provides any performance boosts along the way. I'll be doing a massive file purge at some point so I'll hold off on bulk backup/defrag until then (I back up important stuff one item at a time to save on storage which is at a premium in the Beeps household... currently occupied by clean starter images. No need for chaotic, bloated spazzo images... lol).

Beep, given where you are now and where you want to go, I would be inclined to set aside a chunk of disk space on an external drive and methodically do a "save as" for each project, in it's own folder, using PPF and Copying all Audio across. Once you're done you can delete everything off your old drive and then move it all back

Really the bulk of what's on here now is either finished or trash so a lot of it will be just the final project versions stored on DVDs and left off the system (and really the only reason I'd do that is because I'm a pack rat when it comes to even silly things I'll never touch again). What is going to be the biggest task after sorting through all of that is actually rounding up all the zipped program installers (not the unzipped ones which I'll delete) and backing those up. I gotta have almost a hundred different doodad, update, sample, prorgram, etc installers floating around as well as their unzipped versions... but not all of them because some things I've downloaded but didn't install. I also need to cross reference it all because some things I haven't even downloaded but intended to so essentially I want to have every program, driver, sample pack, whatever backed up somewhere so if I want to reinstall I don't have to dl it again. It's all taking up a huge amount of space unnecessarily (and I have multiple copies of some things from foolishly using Copy instead of Cut when moving things around on the system... stoopid I know). That's not really related to all this but kind of in a roundabout way is because if I get rid of all the gack, have everything organized, backed up, etc THEN I can blitzkrieg the system with CCleaner/DiskDefrag. I was highly unorganized when I first starting working on this machine (which I somehow managed to build myself despite knowing jack titty about computers) so it's kind of like a messy garage. Looking at the mess and always having to dig for everything is annoying but the thought of cleaning it up all the way to back is overwhelming so you end up with a couple neat piles at the front of a mountain of mess all gnarled up and intertwined amongst itself. lol That's why I was thinking of just wiping the whole thing and starting from scratch but the system works well so I'd be worried I'd screw something up or forget something..... and really going through the endless hours of intalling everything again would probably be far worse than just cleaning up the virutal garage.
