Is Sonar demanding on video card?
I have a reasonably high performance ASUS motherboard desktop, and I use the built in video. I did this in order to keep things quiet. For some reason, Sonar will sometimes not update/scroll the screen to keep up with the timeline, and in essence the time cursor gets lost. Sometimes I just exit Sonar and come back, and it is fixed. Other times I need to re-boot. Is this a quirk of Sonar, or am I using too low performance of a video card? Thanks

I can't imagine your onboard video is the culprit here - I am using an Nvidia GT8600. I suspect it may be something else relative to your hardware. What are your specs (e.g. processor, memory, interface, etc. - see my sig for an example)?

This isn't a performance issue, but rather by design.
The track view only stops following the cursor if you've clicked in the track area during playback. This is so you can carry on editing where you clicked. To make it start following again, right click on the timeline above the clips pane.

And as a general note, no, sonar is not demanding video-wise.

I will see if I have been clicking the track area during playback. Good to know this is the design. But this doesn't seem to be the answer to the problem because after it happens once, it remains in the condition until I restart Sonar or Reboot. Just on the outside chance it's this, have you tried pressing scroll lock I don't think I have pressed scroll lock but I will watch out for it, thanks. I have not lost data or anything that makes me get angry due to this, so its not a big deal. I just thought may be I should augment the video power. It all started when Micro Center sent me an offer to buy a video card, starting me thinking that my motherboard graphics is weak. Those gamers must be using crazy amounts of video, since the graphics cards cost up to US$999. What are your specs (e.g. processor, memory, interface, etc. For whatever its worth , here are my specs: ASUS Z87-A LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard. i7-4770k @3.5 ghz, 16GB, 64 bit windows 8.1, boot drive is a Samsung 850 Evo 500 gig. Data drive is a WD 2 terabyte. Interface is an RME fireface UCX using firewire with an aftermarket firewire card. I have been diligent to keep my registry as clean as possible. But I do have internet access while Sonar is running, and many times I have other programs in the background. Virus protection is the Windows Defender. 10 years ago I had a separate computer to run the DAW and it never saw the internet, but those days have passed.

Your specs seem to be fine, they surpass what I am using and I never have issues with Sonar. I've tracked and mixed projects as large as 100 tracks. To my knowledge, Sonar does not use 3D acceleration, only 2D acceleration (same as Windows Vista and above). Your built-in video card provides this out of the box. Regards, Dan

Thanks for this advice, I didn't know this was how it is supposed to work. Helps a lot. I think a great deal of my "problem" was not understanding this. Other times, when the cursor jumps from point to point instead of scrolling I still think is some kind of bug that requires a re-boot, but it is rare.
