Ride On The Wind

I played irish Bouzouki on this one. They sound like arpeggios but it's really me playing although I did connect some of the parts. The idea was for the acoustics to underpin the flutes and vocal harmonies.

    Andy- Thanks!

Rimshot- Thanks!!! but I didn't play the flute in this one:) I used a flute sample library. I have a flute I sometimes play but it was easier and sounded better to use this.

    Phil- Thanks! Much appreciated.

    starise,
i played with a 'greek' band for several years,
    weekend gigs,
i played bass, and the main guy played a greek bouzouki....
i always thought it was such a wonderful sounding instrument....

i like the way you used it here.
    almost like a banjo part,
    it's very effective,
    sounds wonderful

Bat- I thought initially you had said you played in a "geek" band...lol....I probably am one of those too. I am experimenting with diffwerent picking patterns and tunings. There is a difference between greek tuning and irish tuning...also differences in the string setup. The first two "courses" or pairs of strings can either be octaves or two of the same...it has a moving bridge which can wreak havoc on intonation at the higher notes. Thanks for your comments.

I love it, Tim.  It makes me want to buy a bouzouki!  My ex is in a Celtic band, and this instrument is one of the stars.  Keep up the good work.

I like how the acoustics are often panned wide? Did you double track them, or is there just one on one side, bussed to a delay and sent to the other?  I'm curious!

The backing chorals plus the odd synth pads really lay down a bed that supports the flute action. A bed of clover, that is.

I was going to buy you a Guinness, but the ending just kind of stops, so I drank yours. Sorry!  :)      What about a fade out, or something orchestral and definitive for your ending?  My .02 pence.

really nice mix and a great feeling tune.

Tim, I'm listening to this on a cheap pair of headphones and the mix is coming across just right. I'll have a listen on a better system at some stage to see if I can hear anything different, but it sounds nice here.

Tim, Just like the title of the piece and the picture you have posted this is truly a "Ride On The Wind". It is kind of a magical piece in the way it all fits together.

Re: Ride On The Wind 2015/06/03 14:14:43 (permalink)
Lynn- Thanks man! Hey a decent bouzouki is proced about the same as a guitar...go for it! They don't put out as much volume as a guitar...smaller cavity, and this is why some prefer to use double bass strings instead of octave strings...ok I'm rambling...sorry, and thanks!!

    Wookie- Thank you!

    Freddy J.- Thanks Freddy!

Tom- Thanks for that suggestion regarding the ending! I usuallytrack one of two ways. In this case I double tracked the zouk...but I also sometimes track a stereo pair of condensers and I might add a spacial widener to it..like the plug in the Nomad Factory folder..I think it's called a "stereo widener"...I have also played around with M/S on my pre amp but not this time.

Rebel007- This is good to know..that it comes across ok on basic headphones. Thanks!!

John- Thanks for listening. Much appreciated.

Very nice, Tim!   The fact that you've used the real thing adds a little something special, and the fact that you've played it well (and consistent!) is icing on the cake.   This style seems to really suit you.
