Does anyone know of a company that sells 808 bass plugins??/ the two I found recently claim they have a plugin and then only sell you wave files-- so much false advertisement

Is it samples you are after? Or are you wanting a TR-808 drum synth VSTi?

Okay, in that case, I can recommend a product called Drumaxx. It is make by Image-Line. It isn't free, but it is a true "synth" and comes with some basic TR-808 sounds. Once loaded you can tweak those sounds to suit your needs, much more than you could do with a real TR-808. http://www.image-line.com/plugins/Synths/Drumaxx/ cheers andy

Great stuff... I'm sure you will not be disappointed. It's mu go to drum machine when I want an electro sound. Other drum synths (Battery and what have you) also have some retro stuff, but they're sample based and just not as versatile.

Ah... I didn't see this post... Sorry. When you said "bass", and "808" I assumed you meant kick drum. As Brando has pointed out, "808" refers to Roland's popular TR-808 drum machine. Their bass synth, the TB-303, aka Bass Line (I had one of those once) is emulated by something called "Bass Station" by a company called Novation. Originally it was a hardware synth only but for some time now they have created a VSTi for it. You can download the demo here:- http://uk.novationmusic.com/software/bass-station/support-downloads I'm trying to find out how to buy it because I fancy that for myself...

I've managed to buy the Novation Bass Station VSTi (it's 64bit). It isn't free... Cost me £26. http://www.focusrite-estore.com/novation/ You have to slash your wrist and give blood before they let you buy it (name, address, phone number, blood group etc.) but I managed it in the end. For what it is, it should be free. I only bought it because I'm a fan of Novation stuff (I have a Nova gathering dust, amongst other things). There are plenty other ways, free, and 64bit, of emulating a TB-303... Afterall, it was an extremely basic analogue synth in its day. My main use of my TB-303 was to use it to drive my Juno and SH-101, back in the days of CV (control voltage).

Luckily, my wrists are still intact (got Novation Bass Station for free with my Scarlett 2i4). It's been a year, but still haven't checked out the software.

The Venom VB-303 is hands down the best free 303 emulator I've heard. It has a very authentic 303 sequencer built in. It also has a MIDI mode but you have to "unlock" it by typing in a number every time the project loads - the author did this to encourage people to use the sequencer, which is the heart at soul of the 303's character. Anyway check it out.

I had both the keyboard and rack of the BassStation, the keyboard was the first piece of music equipment I bought. It was a great little synth, but a terrible 303 clone. If the software plug in emulates the hardware well, I wouldn't buy it to make 303 sounds. I also had a FreeBass 383, which was analogue and although much closer to at 303 sound, it wasn't there, but it had a great sound, it liked to get nasty.
