Setting Templates, Best practices, etc.

I have been immersed in the video tutorials, but one thing seems missing.....for us REAL noobs

Where is the video that says here is  how to set up your own template, etc....?

I am using a std cover band, 8 or 9 tracks usually. I send all the electric guitar tracks to TH2, and all acoustic tracks to Bias(Usually Dumble clean). EZD2 is one track. I like the idea of having the amp  sims on a bus, but couldn't they also be an FX chain?

My biggest issue with the videos is they give you 5 or 6 ways to do the same thing. It gets confusing after a while, I only need one or two! And doesn't ANYONE make a shortcuts guide?

Just take one of your projects which you're really happy with, strip out all the audio (and any Midi) *tip* select all tracks, then in the tracks menu select "Wipe tracks".

Now do a save as, type = Template, Go to Folder = Template

If you want this to be the default template, overwrite your Normal template.

That's it

Back when I was recording the band I was in, I used track templates, which included monitoring busses and what have you. Nowadays, there's only me, and I don't bother with templates at all, except the "out of the box" one. I used the same idea outlined by Jonesey, once I had a track set up how I wanted it.

I preferred the track template over project template... just personal preference...

When you say "amp sims," you mean TH2, for example? If so, I'd rather either have it in the associated track's effects bin, or in PC as a chain. I reserve busses for sticking effects like reverb and delay which I would be sending more than one track to. One reason for that is I only ever want to put one instrument through an amp sim at a time, so why have it on a bus. But that's just my noob, untutored thought on the matter

For recording my band I just make a blank CWP project that will take me through the tracking and save it as a CWP file and call it " Band Template". I add only what I know for sure I'll use as it progresses. Most importantly all the inputs and tracks are set and named.
Just before the session I'll open and "save as" as many copies of this project as I think I'll need that night.
If I know the song names I name them. If I don't, I number them. But using "save as" and putting them all in an Album folder keeps it organized nicely. This folder will be transferred from my laptop to my main DAW for overdubs and editing. But if your band records in your studio space then all the better.
At the session I open them all and minimize. They should show as little boxes at the bottom of the screen. You can have dozens of projects open in Sonar (memory dependent) if they are not ridiculously enamored with effects. That way each song is ready to go in a second.
