What software are you using to make support/demo videos?

I tried 4 different free screen and audio capture programs but none of them will capture the sound from Sonar. What are you using and how do you get it to capture sound from Sonar?

I am trying to make a video to show someone how to do something in Sonar but I would like the sound that Sonar is making to be part of the video.

I might also annotate it but I think that I can do in Sonar later?

Thanks

This may have something to do with the Windows driver settings on your audio.
You can set things up to give exclusive control or to share.
And the settings may be a bit different for WDM, WASAPI, ASIO, etc.
Try different settings on the Windows Sound Control panel and in Sonar audio preferences.

This is just a guess, I don't do any sort of video capture.

Thanks. I tried all sorts of things with Windows driver setup but nothing worked. At first I had Sonar take exclusive access but I changed it to share but it did not make a difference.

I am using the ASIO driver that came with my interface.

I looped a pair of outputs back to the mic inputs of my audio interface and that allowed it to capture sound but the sound was awful. I messed with the gain but the kick drums always sounded like I was hitting a hollow pipe. lol

I would have thought this would be easy. I am sure it is and I am just missing something obvious.

Tremo,

A bit spendy if you go with pro software, but you may be able to do the same with the free windows movee maker, or however they spell it. This is also a different approach, more like you would use to do filmed demos, not screen capture. This said, it is an extremely efficient and reliable way to get demos and tutorials out with pristine sound accompaniment.

I use Sony Vegas, but the principle is the same. Takes a few shots at it to develop the skills or intuition, but here's what I do. There are many YouTube totorials on movee maker that illustrate the principle.

Have Sonar recording the sound and a mic doing your narrative into Sonar recording voice, like it was a project. Synths or guitars on one channel, voice on another.

At the same time, have a camera rolling to film the presentation, camera with the cheap audio mic on.

After you have finished the recording, load the camera video into movee maker. Render the Sonar project as a wave and import the wave into movee maker.

Fine art here is to then match down to a couple samples, the camera audio and the Sonar audio. Once aligned to the precision of no echo, mute the camera audio, and only Sonar remains.

Professional results.

John

Thank you. In this case, I want to record the screens while I am using Sonar (like what Cakewalk does for CakeTV videos). I can get the screen capture part working but not the audio.

Thanks

I am still curious about best ways to do this but I think I had a break through.

I routed outputs from my interface back into the mic inputs (I tried to use line but windows doesn't seem to know how to access them).

The first time it sounded awful but I think it was because I was mixing the input back into the output and I was getting phase issues.

This time I configured my interface so that it was not mixing the mic inputs with the output and it seemed to work OK.

Thanks

Very nice. So this lets you record the commentary as you are doing the demo (or whatever)?

Yes.

It's a full multi in/out Virtual Mixer / Virtual ASIO Audio device (and in the case of Banana EQ/Recorder). There is a small learning curve to get your head around it but hopefully the video will assist some. It's very versatile.

The free Hypercam 2 works fine.  Captures sonar screen and sound.  I made 3-4 tutorials for a friend, and I had no issues at all.

For the person I was trying to help earlier, I ended up using SnagIt (trial). I think the problem I was having with all the tools was that I need to route the output (going to my speakers/headphone) back to the input so it could be captured.

I ended up making the video, imported it back in to Sonar and added another audio track for the annotation. This was a bit awkward as I had to remember what I was doing and I did not allow enough time to explain what I was doing.

Having the ability to record the annotation track at the same time as doing the video would have made it flow better.

Using the VoiceMeeter software, I think I would need Banana to record the annotation track separately as I going through Sonar to demo, it is not in record the entire time. Then after the annotation track was done, I would need to import it along with the video capture and then align it time wise?

I am also going to check out Hypercam 2.

Thanks

Re: What software are you using to make support/demo videos? 2015/05/31 12:12:59 (permalink)
I'm not 100% sure what you mean by annotation track - assuming the commentary audio (narration(?)) - live from an incoming mic(?)

VoiceMeeter will let you do it all at once live - commentary, recording to sonar, audio/synth playback (from live or pre-recorded MIDI). No need to take a second pass to line things up. I use Banana but think you could also use base Voicemeeter. This is because you can pass all the audio elements to the 'B' channel/device. You don't need the recording from Voicemeeter for the purposes of what you are after. (However, if you wanted you could probably record it to either VM or Sonar at the same time regardless). They are donationware so fully featured at no cost - trusting that you'll see the benefits and donate.

I believe HyperCam2 is no different than the others - you won't get the processed/wet audio from Sonar on ASIO drivers(?)

I'd have thought annotation was more about putting text captions, speech bubbles etc on it. I imagine you can do that with the Youtube tools(?). Titles, credits etc I suggest are part of Video editting. I use HitFilm 2 Express - it's discontinued, at the Express Edition level, but pops up occassionally for free. I actually got it for 1 cent from Videoguys. They still have it ... but it's $5  - This was a $149 product.

For screen capture, I use Corel Video Studio Producer Ultimate.  I did it in v6, and just upgraded to v8, where I see some functions are easier than in v6.  I was using it to record the notes playing in Noteworthy Music Composer.  Although a little clumsy in v6, it was rather easy.  I think I had a test video in about 10 minutes.  Once you initiate the capture function, it is just a matter of clicking the record button.

Yes. You are correct. I meant commentary not annotation.

I will have to try Voicemeeter basic but since it doesn't say it records, I will have to route it to something that does. Banana seems like a better fit for me.

I'd say the Banana recorder is more intended for recording podcasts and Skype/VOIP calls - but, of course, use it in any way it works for you.

Recognize for what you are after VoiceMeeter is acting as the Audio Device - you still need the Screen Recording software which ultimately records the audio (as well as the video).

I've referred to Screen Recorder software esp in the linked thread above - post 29.

Sorry for being slow. ...and I do really appreciate your help. It sounds like Voicemeeter does virtually what my patch cable does on my interface.

If I attempt another video, I will give it a try. I think all will be clear to me when I actually use the software. :-)

No probs ... and yes ... VM is emulating a hardware device / loopback cables. It sits on virtual cable tehcnologies. VB-Audio also offer these as individual tools according to needs. But VM/Banana wrap it all into one package and present it with the added features of a Virtual Mixer.

One more plug for Hypercam.  It is exceptionally easy to use, records your screen and anything coming out of Sonar, whether it was prerecorded or is live monitored.  It is ideally suited for tutorials on DAWS.  I tried a bunch of free ones, and they all were a bit off and/or confusing. Hypercam just worked right off the bat.

One more plug for Hypercam...

I don't enjoy the same results wit Hypercam alone Sven. When I have ASIO Behringer Audio Interface as configured to Sonar and as default Win8 Record and Playback Devices ... Hypercam does not give me the option to Record Sound From my Sonar out / Behringer ASIO. 'Default Sound Recording Device' hears/records my microphone input, but neither live soft synth nor pre-recorded audio get picked up by Hypercam, despite me being able to hear them (and my mic with Input Echo=ON) in realtime.

I also have some issues with sound and recording out sync at 30fps when played to Win8 Media Player - 8 fps appears to be in sync. It seems to play OK in VLC at either fps.

And it triggers crash (of itself) on every close (64bit Win8).
