Latency Question, yeah another one.....

In Sonar, It shows my buffer size as 2.9ms at 128 samples. It says that the effective latency at 44k is 2.9 msec. However, when I look at ASIO latency below, it shows ~5ms input ~10ms output for a total roundtrip of 15msec . The effective seems fine but the roundtrip?

buffers and effective latency are only measuring one way, you have to double it for approximately the input from your instrument through your soundcard, through your computer hardware, through sonar, then back out through your computer hardware to your soundcard for you to hear it.

it's more than 2X because there are also added "headroom" buffers in the round trip calculations.

an extra 5msec does seem like it's more than it should be, however.

There is an issue with the Toneport. I tweaked it as best I could, but still had latency. I put in my 2i2, set it to 2 msec, and away we went....I guess I shouldn't have fallen for the cute meters! Oh, and on a side note when I started Sonar after switching back, the 2i2 was at 48 ms.....a pretty cool sounding delay!

There is also delay through AD and DA converters - that is added to the buffers.
When using a soundcard it can only report what it knows about - like if only ADAT/SPDIF in/out, it only knows about buffers and report thatas latency.
If onboard AD/DA it can report that too - in my case if it's 140 extra samples on output, and 114 on input or similar.

In Sonar sum of these usually shows as reported latency - and also has a field to add a number of your own, if experiment show that a loopback recording would not align properly - AD/Da externally add delay too.

This is what I think is happening...
