[Solved] Sonitus sidechain problem

Hi all

My Sonar Platinum Sonitus gate is not responding to a sidechain send.  The send was in the correct menu, but the audio just doesn't seem to get there.  I started a fresh project and it all works fine, but there is a problem of some kind in my existing project.  I stripped all other busses and tracks away, and cut the song down to about 10 seconds total--still same problem.  I've posted the 10 second version of the project as:
http://joerose.com/misc/W...0gate%20experiment.cwb

Maybe someone with spare time could check this for me.  My system is 64 bit Win 7, 2.66 Intel Quad CPU, 8 meg RAM, using a Roland Octa-Capture sound card.

thanks

Hi. You could try to copy (just drag to an empty space) the track over to a new track, and try again with the new track.
I have heard (and experienced) similar solutions for fx problems.
    Best of luck.

Thanks Ken, tried that before totally tearing down the project to the bare bones.

The cwb was an empty project. I could add tracks and monitor the Sonitus Gate sidechain using the project.

Really?  It unpacks and opens fine here...weird, weird.  I just tried it twice now.  It's only about 10 sec. long, but not empty.

I see it now. Not sure why it opened empty the first time.

Swapping the output to sidechain in the gate and I can hear the sidechain ok here.

I do not have an Octa-Capture interface but that should not matter.

Maybe it could be an issue with the project file itself (on some level)?

Yeah, not sure why it opened the way it did.

Still have no problem hearing the sidechain in the Gate.

On my laptop, I had to change the settings (from a preset) on the gate, to get it to work.

I believe you will need to rollback SONAR and then run the update again.

I'm still struggling with this Sonitus problem--this is affecting many of my projects and I really don't want to have to go back to rebuild each of them from scratch.  Help please Mr. Wizard.  The sample project I uploaded behaves just like the problem I'm having. "Loading a preset" doesn't fix anything.

When the sidechain works, it's great.  Anyone know a free (or cheap) sidechain ducker VST that I could use instead?

Free side-chainable gate and compressor here. Molot is a popular choice, despite being overly complex and temperamental. There is also MCompressor from Meldaproduction, part of the free bundle.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

thanks bit--I looked at the compressors you mentioned; I'm not seeing ducking, maybe as it's a gate-type function.  Molot looked like it could be configured to do most anything, but not today.   I'll have a longer look later.

Have you tried a reset/rescan of your plugins?

How about holding SHIFT while opening the project?
It will ask you to confirm each plugin instance.
Basically it tries to initialize(fix) your project file in case
some wires got crossed during the original event that
    caused your problem.

It's great to have another compressor in a crunch but
Not knowing what happened and how to mitigate it
    would drive me nuts.

You seem to have the master, which is soloed, grouped with something. Turn off the Solo button in the Control Bar and the noise gate will work.

First--thanks for the buss compressor info and link--this looks very useful
I've been resetting/rescanning a lot, to no avail.  Haven't tried the SHIFT opening maneuver.  Will do.

The solo switch on the bus was left over from a switching arrangement so I could A-B my mix status with a reference track.  I'll go into the big project and see if taking that stuff out helps.

Much obliged everyone; rebuilding the affected projects is not attractive at all.  I'll report back when I get a chance to try the solutions offered.

Removing the solo group switching fixed the gate problem (in more than one instance) in one of my other projects, so I will assume that's the snag--yay!  I don't need to know why; just glad to have it working.

still, I now have to go experiment with sidechaining the buss compressors because they look so interesting!

"Why" is a little more complicated, but you have to be careful about what you group, and if you hide any tracks using Track Manager, because you might end up muting something you don't want to mute by hitting solo. Glad it's sorted out, though!

One more comment...a lot of times, the first impulse people have is to re-install SONAR or whatever. This is rarely needed, and can make things worse because now you're back to defaults you may have changed.

Many thanks guru C--I've been a fan since PAIA days.

The reflex to re-install runs deep--thanks for clarifying that.

Any suggestions (by anyone) on how to set up an A/B switching environment to easily reference commercial recordings while working on my amateur multitrack projects--would be greatly appreciated. I guess setting up the solo groups within the track environment is safer than using the busses...(?)

Exclusive Solo will do what you want. This documentation is for X3 but the functionality is the same. What's cool is you can easily A/B/C/D/etc. etc., not just A/B. I use this all the time to compare tracks, it's a great feature.

Craig, in most cases you can delete the X3 and the current help will be found so when
    http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=SONAR%20X3&language=3&help=Playback.16.html
points to the X3 help the same URL without the %20X3 gets the current version
