Brother G.

Did you export with ARC-2 turned on? The mix sounds like it was.

If not, it sounds like the guitar has too much sizzle. The drums seemed a bit too compressed. I think the vox had a bit too much verb on it.

Then again, you know my ears can deceive me at times. Maybe it's one of those days.

Hi Grant,

I'm not familiar with Stone Temple Pilots (although I have heard of them). So I also checked out the original.

So I can say, mix apart, this is a great cover. I'm glad someone with Ed's expertise has commented first but I did listen first, before reading those comments. I'm not such a great mix man myself, not with conventional instruments, but reading Ed's comments above, I tend to agree with them, to a certain extent anyway...

Yeah, the drums sounded quite compressed. And the guitar was very "bright." The verb on the vocals might have been okay... Trouble is... Some of those "traits" may be a deliberate intent, so it would be interesting to hear you thoughts back.

As it is, I think it's quite a powerful cover and I enjoyed listening to it

I took some time to listen to a few songs on your soundclick page and the percussion wasn't compressed as much on some of those songs. So could the compressed drums on this song be a "feature?"

cheers

Yeah, Grant... Whatever you have done, your percussion doesn't sound quite so compressed and guitars not so bright.

Let's see what the experts say

That's better G.

Now about the reverb on drums and vox. They sound completely different. If that's the effect you're going for that's cool. However, to me they sound like they are stepping on each other just a bit. Again, that's just one man's opinion only worth the paper it's printed on.

Looking to keep a bit of a psychedelic sound but not too much or wrong reverb. Only reverb is buss reverb. I have timeless 2 in the vocal buss but just light chorusing. I updated the mix with less room and less vox in the room. Thanks again for the ears :) I may have a look at the type of reverb and change.

Edit: ops, did it again with ARC, corrected

I'm thinking you need to listen to each track separately first and get them all finalized for pan, excitement, Imager (this would be your reverb and stereo positioning), Dynamics, EQ and maximization. To me the whole song sounds very bright and a lot of mistakes are going on in the sound quality. As for the cover song, it comes off very nicely done, except for the mix quality. The same goes for the vocals, i.e. great singing, but it needs that mix work to fine tune everything. Nice song, now let see what you come up with for the new mix. Just my opinion.

Thanks John was in the process of doing that and found a plugin is crashing during mixdown. Going to have to make a few adjustments I'm unsure of. Will be back up at some point, thanks for the help so far.
