Using SONAR Platinum Software
Can I use my LaunchKey 49 with Cakewalk Sonar Platinum software? If so, how do I set-it up? According to Novation's KnowledgeBase ... "Launchkey 49's InControl is compatible with Ableton Live, Reason, FL Studio and DAWS which support HUI control. Sonar does not support HUI and so you'll only be able to use the LaunchKey with it as a standard MIDI controller." How do I set it up to program the faders, potentiometers, and Launch keypad to work using standard MIDI control? If it is not possible, please send me a list of SONAR Compatible MIDI Keyboard Controller hardware (that also controls the faders, pots, and pad keys). I can't find it any where on your site. Here is a picture of the device I am referring to. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Ken Jinks

That is rather strange. The HUI (Human User Interface) At present its obsolete, was developed by Mackie to work with PT. Where the Mackie Control was developed for all DAWs. None the less Sonar has a generic controller app that can be customized to work with any controller. Also Sonar has ACT for quick control of things.

Just so you know, this is a user forum so when you address things to "You" you're actually talking to other customers not Cakewalk. Having said that, Sonar does have a communication protocol called ACT, which does some of what you want but it is shrouded in a mystery that makes its use difficult for many. I'm Sure more folks will be along to give you actual helpful information. Welcome and all the best.

Hi Ken: If your controller sends standard MIDI messages through it's controllers, read the documentation for the Cakewalk Generic Surface plugin (CGS) and ACT MIDI Controller plugin in the SONAR documentation (SONAR Help file or the SONAR Reference Manual). Doing so will help you to setup your controller as a control surface for use in SONAR. It takes a bit of effort, but once you get things setup, you can save the setup as a preset in the CGS and the ACT MIDI Controller Plugins. Using the Control Surface section of the Cakewalk Plug-in Manager, you can even export the presets to a directory on your hard drive, so you can import them back into SONAR, if something ever goes wrong or you want to use your controller in another version of SONAR (upgrading to a newer version, for instance). That will save you the time of having to set up your controller again from scratch. Hope this helps.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObsW0t5FnzM Karl Rose's video (link above, FastBikerBoy on these forums) is a good introduction to ACT - this one is for X1 but ACT itself is virtually unchanged since then so this will give you a good overview into how to set up your controller - he uses an example that has no preset built in in SONAR. I suggest trying it out, or watching similar videos (lots on youtube), then asking more specific questions if you get stuck. Note - if you are willing to "roll up your sleeves" check out Alexey's posts ("Azslow3" on these forums) and download his app which fixes many/most of the deficiencies with ACT and will certainly give you the most satisfactory overall solution - but is not an out of the box solution.
