[Solved] Axiom controller not recognized
I'm trying to use an Axiom 49 (first generation) as a controller in Sonar Artist. I have it connected with USB. I power it on before starting Sonar. I go to Preferences -> MIDI Devices. Nothing is in the list. Why? I also found the drivers for this controller and installed them. Still not recognized. What's even stranger, I previously used an Oxygen 49 (also M-Audio), and it was recognized.

Do you see it in device manager in Sound devices?

No. What do you mean by "device manager"? I see no such category under audio devices.

Zargg71 Hi. When I hooked up my M-Audio Radium 49 via usb, I had to use the usb legacy drivers. http://www.m-audio.com/support/drivers Find your OS, and try it out. Best of luck.
I installed the legacy drivers, no luck.

I figured it out. This controller won't work with USB 3.0 ports, only 2.0. A workaround is to plug a USB 2.0 hub into a 3.0 port, which then converts the signal to 2.0. While we're here, I have one other issue. Every time I open Sonar, I get the error message below. It seems to be inconsequential, but it's just annoying. Runtime Error! Program: ...\SONARART.exe R6034 An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly. Please contact the application's support team for more information. Any advice on that one?

Sorry for the tech speak, still having a bit of a hangover from retirement.. What I should have said: In Windows, go to Control Panel Open Device Manager look under Sound, Video and Gaming controllers Your controller needs to show up there. If it does not, the problem is not with Sonar(Could be cable, bad controller, bad port, no Windows driver, etc.) Get it to show up there, and Sonar should then see it

That's a very useful tip, I marked the thread "solved" to attract attention to it.

Neuroharmony It can't be that I've exceeded the number of devices allowed because the Oxygen works with the same setup. When I remove the Oxygen and plug in the Axiom, it isn't recognized.
Congratulations on diagnosing your problem and finding a workaround. I hope my previous advice did not lead you astray, as it clearly was not the source of your problem. Your logic in the above statement, however, is incorrect. Suppose that the MIDI limit is 10 devices, and that you have plugged one or more prior MIDI devices into several USB sockets (remember that you failed to tell us what your machine is so who knows how many devices or USB sockets you have used). Each time you plug the Oxygen into a USB socket it counts as one device, and the combination of that device plugged into that particular socket is now MIDI port 10 in Windows count. Windows will let you plug that device into that port, and any ports it has previously occupied, as often as you like, because it is on the list of accepted devices/ports. But when you plug in the Axiom, that is a new device/port combination, now totalling 11 and above the limit. So the Axiom is not accepted, but the Radium still works and the problem is the device limit being exceeded.

I thought you meant the count of devices currently plugged in. Thanks for the clarification.

Zargg71 Is your pc up to date (win7 Sp1, with latest c++, etc)? If not you could try to update. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2977003 or use windows update. Best of luck.
Yep, it's fully up to date. I'll go ahead and download the latest C++ anyway. Just to clarify, do I need the "C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio 2013" ? And there are three files within it: vcredist_arm.exe, vcredist_x86.exe, and vcredist_x64.exe. Do I need all of them?

I would quit while you are ahead. Given this was a compatibility issue between a USB2 device and a USB3 port; there is no need look for trouble by updating parts of your machine which appear to be working.

This is a separate issue, see post #8. (Perhaps I should have started a new thread, but alas.)

Yes, adding unrelated issues in a thread makes problem solving difficult. If you feel like winging it go ahead. A call to CW support would be the fastest most reliable way to solve runtime lib issues.

So I installed those files and still get the runtime error. Oh well, I guess it doesn't matter, and the solution is probably extremely obscure. Thanks everyone.

I didn't think the Axiom 49 (I have one) needed drivers. My old Oxygen 8 does not show as Oxygen 8 in device manage but something different with the word legacy in it. If you have another DAW you could see if it shows up. My Oxygen 8 shows up in Reason but it wont let me use my EWX2496 in ASIO unless I use ASIO4ALL. My solution to using M-Audio products is to not buy their stuff again. Nothing but poor driver support.

Neuroharmony While we're here, I have one other issue.
The problem seems to be that the manifest for your installation of Sonar Artist is absent, defective or inaccessible. You could try re-installing Sonar Artist using the administrator option which might solve the problem if access to the program's manifest is limited by a permissions issue. Right click the installer application exe file and choose "run as administrator" in the dropdown menu. Or before trying that, see if you can run Sonar as administrator and avoid the issue. It may well be inconsequential, and the best advice on this one would be from "the application's support team." https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms235560(v=vs.90).aspx http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/three-tips-running-programs-administrator-windows-7.htm

Interesting. What type of file is a manifest? Is it one of those .dll files?
