Operation Hedgy...

Hi Peeps

I thought I'd share a recent "interest" of mine...

A few weeks ago, our dog ran outside, barking her head off. She rarely runs these days as she is getting on a bit. Anyway, we went outside to see what the commotion was about and sat there, in a tight little ball, was a hedgehog. Molly, our dog, must have spotted it through our patio door window and decided it needed her attention.

So, we now knew we had a hedgehog...

We did some quick research on t'internet and found that is is unusual to see a hedgehog out and about during the day time and that it must either be unwell or out looking for food while the kids are asleep. Apparently, the best thing to put down for a hedgehog is dog food, so in the evening, we put some out in a small plastic container, just on the ground outside.

The next morning the container was empty... So something had had their fill that night.

But, was it the hedgehog?

We guessed not. I suspected that magpies, crows or a rat were at it, and my missus spotted a cat licking its chops around the container too.

So, I came up with the idea to make a small enclosure which could house the container and hopefully keep at least the birds at bay.

I made the enclosure out of an unused plastic container from the shed... That was easier than knocking something up out of timber. That evening we put the food out again. In the morning, the container was licked clean again.

At this point, I decided that I wanted to know for sure what was eating that food. So I set to making a mount for our GoPro (I bought shares in one with my eldest son) and also made a bracket for a LED head torch, to provide some light.

This was the result of last night's operation:-

So now we know who is snaffling the dog food

Yeah, I share your disappointment dood... I was kinda hoping that a hedgehog would turn up, but it wasn't to be, sorry

I'll be making some mods to the enclosure and trying again tonight. My guess is, though, that Hedgy may be a bit camera shy...

I liked the brief appearance of Sid though

Sid was the slug that made a brief appearance at about a minute in. Tiger (that is what I have named the cat, because it isn't ours) does look a bit thin...

The video was made up from single images taken at 0.5 second intervals and then put together by using Windows Movie Maker. I don't have Vegas or anything and WMM seems to have been okay for my simple needs at this time

Thanks for watching (and listening LOL).

Or, even worse... Listen to my effin music!

I'm having to delete this one and upload a new, with errors removed. I got the date wrong, by a month... I hate mistakes

I don't think so... I've never asked one.

I know  though, and being a bit OCD, that's got to change, so I've uploaded a new file and edited the OP...

sad, but true

You don't need a huge opening. A bit rat will go through a half inch slot. I don't know how big Spiny Norman is but if he's as big as a Guinea Pig you would only need a hole as big as a tennis ball.

That cat has a tape worm. What a chow hog!
