Samsung 10.1 or iPad?...
Looking at getting a wifi Padlet (yes, I made that word up) for a control surface, to run TouchDAW and whatever else comes our way soon... Quality-wise, I suppose it's between the Samsung 10.1 TAB4 (wifi) and an equivalent iPad (9.7..?). Anyone have an idea what's the better bet for the future? Price / Performance opinions are welcome too. Thanks for the input! Ludwig

I'm sure there are a lot of opinions on this both ways. I am normally a windows user on my desktop (of course), but I have an iPad (4th Gen) and an iPhone. They work seamlessly together and I love that aspect of it. I have used my iPad as a control surface using TouchDAW (IIRC), but I'm not an professional recording engineer, all of my experience has been in my home studio using a DAW and I've not found using a control surface that helpful, so I have not been using my iPad as a control surface. I also think that it's important to know if your ONLY purpose of using the tablet is to use it for a control surface or if there are other uses you will be utilizing on it. My iPad's primary use is as a chordsheet/sheet music set list display for playing live and it works very well for that purpose. think about what other uses you will have for the tablet before deciding which platform to purchase.

They are both high quality hardware. All other things being equal, including DAW control, the iPad will have more app choices, both musical and otherwise. As a note, I bought an early android and it was bad (a lot to do w/ viewsonic making their own app site that was the only place to download apps w/o a site). I bought a 2nd iPad (the wife took the first one) but haven't used it w/ my PC. I've got a much bigger touch screen for music work. @

And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

As much as I love my Samsung tablet, most audio based control apps are made exclusively for Apple devices.

Yep, if there is an App for it, it will be for the iPad first.

I'm not an Apple fan but I want to do music on a tablet so I have an iPad. Using a Samsung as a control surface is no big deal but there are close to zero serious apps for audio/MIDI and even less Android pads that can do low latency. It sucks but it's the current reality.

Have to agree re the apps, although I was using an iPad for a different (non music) use - two went wrong in the space of about 7 months - changed to a Samsung - perfect. So as I happen to hate Apple and most things apple, if it wasn't for the music apps, I would go Samsung every time! Ludwig, how's the weather - is it still very cold? - on my way back to Cape Town in a couple of weeks, so I hope it gets warmer before I get there! Nigel

Well tablets in general are disposable technology. They will fail and become obsolete within a couple of years. Not something to rely on for professional jobs where reliability is necessary. That's what Nagras are for.
