OK, I'll bite.

I received my first ear bud device as a gift...in 1958 or '9. It was a 7-transistor (woot!) AM radio with no speaker, only a single ear bud. I was living in central Texas at the time, so the only time the radio worked was at night, on the clear channels. My favorite thing to do was lie in bed at night and listen to the Yankees baseball games. Those teams (59-61) were amazing!

That radio worked PERFECTLY until?

One of my little brothers got p'd at me (don't they all?) and ripped the ear bud cord out of the radio. Daddy? No help there. No replacement.

My next ear bud came with an iPod.

i will bite-I spend a lot of time doing maintenance with my buds in.
unfortunately they do get a bit uncomfortable after 90 mins or so but I`m usually finished.
using your skull as a bass port may not be ideal but once you get the fit nice and snug, the bass is awesome especially if you are using machinery or in a loud place-otherwise the HD 280`s suffice, for me anyway.
Sennheiser Cx 220 previously but they got run over-replaced with CX 300II and are if anything too bassy........around $70
my wife gave me the new buds from her new iphone and they are still as bad as when first released.
horses for courses methinks
cheers

Cheap, they weren't. I used to use them when flying (including 3 trips to the "down under"). Liked them better than the Bose noise-cancelers they gave us on the plane. Since I no longer have to work overseas and the millions of air miles that went with that, the only thing I use them for now is checking mixes rendered to compressed MP3. They're quite good for that.

Not only can't I afford a Porsche, I wouldn't want one. Love my Subaru, thank you very much!

Australia taught me rugby league (go Bears!), Australian football league (go Swans!; never got down to Victoria, sorry) and Just Juice! You live in a good place, mate!

Edit: Oh, one other lesson. Foster's is NOT Australian for beer. Nobody drank that ****e. I was in LOTS of hotels; not one served Fosters. I think Foster's is pure Australian marketing genius. I mean, how many Yanks actually make it down under? I'll admit to drinking a couple of Foster's oil cans before I learned how good Aussie beer really is. Sorry for the off-topic.

Band wise... they are the best thing to isolate your self "more me" and if you have the appropriate moni mixer, dial in more or less of the band, isolated, to your taste.

I worked with a peckerhead of a guitarist/vocalist who refused to wear them because he complained he could not feel the music, but this tone deaf dude could not hear his floor monitor anyway, refused to point the monitor at himself, and was generally an ARSE to work with, I have since quit the band with him..

Music wise I like to put them in when ever I listen to anything the CH band does   only with the plug left dangling in free space

yeah-I have 8 pairs of HD280 Pro`s not because they are the best but because they do not vary soundwise in the headphone mixer, they are incredibly sturdy, can handle hair products and sweat, being stepped on etc and to be honest ,after 10 years using them I like to think I am familiar enough with their limitations to be able to do rough mixdowns.
I also drive a 96 Hilux diesel 4wd capable of running on used frying oil-try budging a recalcitrant heifer with a Porsche,if you know what I mean.
my point is it`s horses for courses-the right tool for the job.
the best is not always necessary.

I've heard that earbuds are more damaging than over the ear headphones because of the way they deliver sound closer to the eardrum, but I can't seem to find the article I got that from.
