Nessus V7

I don't know what to say... I've been on this particular project for so long now it's hardly believable.

Much has changed, and not all for the best I'm sure.

I even dusted my crappy nearfields off to see if they could help in my polishing quest.

Anyways, here it is:-

best of luck

    I like it.

I can hear the work gone on this, the lead synths are really well chosen.

Mix and production sound good to me. Maybe the snare is lost little, more high end crack, others to clarify that.

Breakdown is slight but just enough and you right, this is happy music.

Nice track, well engineered, carefully picked voices, good composition, nice playing and a well constructed arrangement, what's not to like.

Yeah, that's my fault that. I've don't some quite extensive EQ modifications to all fifteen tracks in an effort to get them to fit together. Took me hours and hours LOL! I dialed out a lot of the "crack" at first but I noticed that and put some back. Perhaps not quite enough ...

It was a good exercise though, because I've learned a lot about SPAN and EQ in general.

    Hi Grant,

Thanks for taking time out to listen to Nessus

That was all one synth by the way... I kind of forgot to mention that, because this is a "latest version." So everything was played by u-he's latest release Hive, except for EQ and Limiting.

    Hi Clint,

Thanks for stopping by and listening to my tune... Much appreciated

There are still a few things I don't like about the mix, now that I've listened to it more myself, but sometimes you just have to say "enough is enough."

    Hi Olivier,

    Thanks for listening to Nessus

I was hoping the bass wasn't too overpowering this version... It's tough to work out though, through headphones, and even though I dusted off my nearfields to check the mix at the end, they're not that good... I think the low end response is a terrible 60Hz.

I really appreciate all the nice comments here... It can't be that easy listening to something that is electronic and doesn't even have lyrics, so, yeah... Thanks everyone

Hey Andy, great job on this.  Sometimes we are our own worst critics.  This sounds quite good, and you should consider it done!  I love the call-and-answer interplay between the left and right leads.  Backgrounds are nice and swirly, while the bass is laying down a solid groove, but without being too hard-edged about it.  Stick a fork in it, it's done! :)

Thanks for taking the time to listen to Nessus Walt

I still don't know where that came from to be honest. I am mostly, at the moment, resurrecting old discarded projects in an effort to get my creative juices flowing after a dormant year or more. I came across a demo track created by David Rosen and I thought, "what a great sounding synth," and after a quick play I purchased Hive for myself.

I then took the decision to create a piece completely using Hive, and Nessus was the result.

I had the main piece laid down and uploaded within a week, which is unusual for me, and then spent another two weeks or so polishing it, with the help from peeps here.

    thanks again for listening,

    cheers

Like Walt said, sometimes we're our own worst critics.  It's about time that you took some credit for producing high quality mixes in less than ideal conditions, like most of us.  I don't know if you got my message from another thread, but if you're primarily mixing on headphones, then you may be interested in checking our Focusrite's VRM box.  It's made for headphone mixing and emulates high end speakers in a variety of mixing rooms.  It's relatively cheap, but can perform wonders.  Anyway, you're doing a good job with what you have, and your inspiration is priceless.

    All the best,

I'm looking into that VRM thing. I've been aware of it for some time when I saw it in my local music store a couple of years ago. I didn't bother getting one at the time because I thought it would mess with my existing set-up. Next time I'm in town I'll see if they still stock them and I may make an impulsive purchase . Like you say, they're not too pricey...

    Andy,
All the right keyboard elements coming together to bring this production background and mix full circle. Some killer guitar sounds might work really well in this piece (I'm thinking Kirk Beaur's guitar sound, if he is still in the forum), but there are plenty of others as well. Truly a very valuable and well constructed piece of music. Very nicely done.

Thanks Tim, I'm glad you stopped by for a listen. I actually got the first pass done inside a week, but then spent the rest of the month putting it right. I'd love vocals on my tunes but I can neither write lyrics or sing, so I don't think that will happen any time soon.

Actually, I did do a song, some time ago, called Vast, that had vocals in it. I might upload that to SoundCloud soon. My lyrics, sung with computer generated vocals through a vocoder, so I need to look into doing that again some time, seeing as I recently invested in Vocodex.

    Thanks again for listening

Thanks for listening to Nessus... Listening to your songs I'm surprised you have the patience for my synthetic stuff

Cheers again to everyone who has taken their time to listen to both versions of this tune on SoundCloud. 120 listened between the two, and my post here has managed to stay on the front page of the songs forum for almost a month now, thanks to you guys, and therefore helping its exposure.

    Hi, Andy,

You've got a really nice, lively instrumental here, with a great selection of textured synth sounds layered really well with the smooth melody lines and a fresh, clean sounding mix!

    Excellent work, Andy great stuff!

    Best Wishes,
    Bob

Yeah, sounds pretty good here!!  Snare is a little light, but the overall mix is nice and thick.

It might be a bit of an odd comment for a synth based track, but I really liked your bends.       They really add something to the interplay between left and right.   In spots the individual lines (particularly the left side) reminded me a little of 90's Steve Winwood.

this would work well as a soundtrack to any extreme sport that has long sections of mellow attack,
    like powder skiing, or paragliding

i think the mix works fine, for the genre, which i really don't know much about...
    like,
how much of this is actually played, and what is programmed, etc....

    but it sounds good.

I like it a lot.  Nice lyrical quality to the lead, which as an instrumentalist, I know how hard that is to achieve.

Hi Steve, thanks for listening to Nessus and you following comments

I created those bends in two ways. Some are bends created in real time with the pitch bend wheel and some ore more simply made by using legato and portamento together, again, in real time, although some I tweaked or added later in PRV.

    Hi Rob

I'm so glad that you popped in for a listen... I know you don't normally listen to this sort of "music" LOL!

You are right to pull me up on that issue and I have to admit that my performing abilities are somewhat lacking. I used to play in a band but my parts were relatively simple enough for me to "wing it."

My own music is mainly based around programmed synths, all within Sonar, that I will, now and then, "augment" (and I use that word loosely) with real time playing, that I invariably have to spend some time putting right afterwards.

I have always classed myself more as a "MIDIcian" than a musician, putting more effort into composing rather than playing, much to the annoyance of my missus. She is still waiting for me to serenade her with some Led Zepp stuff on my recently flamboyant purchase of a PRS Studio...

    cheers
