Sidechain on a specific band in multiband compressor

Very useful to control the low end of a bass guitar when triggered by a kick hit, without affecting the midrange and attack.

I don't think it can be done with what's in Sonar right now.

Could be a somewhat easy feature to add.

There are plugins that can do that ... e.g. WAVES C6 ... but I assume other multiband compressors have these options these days

no problem. don't want to advertise for any but if you can get either WAVES C6 or FabFilter Pro-MB on sale, then go for it. either is a multi-band compressor with similar features, FabFilter has superb graphic representation of settings. i got both and use both in virtually every mix.

try it on vocals (instead of just EQ ... which is then sort of dynamic EQing) or on instruments that collide with vocals (side-chained by vox so that instruments are compressed slightly in the vox frequency range whenever vocal are active) ... works miracles with little adjustments ...

The fab filter one really got my attention. I heard of those guys quite often but never tried one of their plugins, I think this one will be the first!

Melda Production offers a variety of mulitband processors w/ sidechain support. They go on sale often at 50% off. And like Fabfilter they have full feature time limited demos.

Thanks! I must say I really dig the interface of the fabfilter and looks insanely powerful, that would take quite something to make me try another one ;)

Sonar still doesn't use the channeling supported by Waves, such as side-chaining, I believe. One of the last DAW's to put it off, maybe? I advocate better Waves support here.  +1

My work-round is to use parallel compression in conjunction with the eq.

Duplicate the bass track and put a compressor sidechained to the kick (or any audio as relevant) on one track. If desired output both tracks to a bus for convenience.

Playback both tracks and have a listen. Cut the bass as seems required in the track without the comp and everything else as seems required in the track with the comp.

Not ideal, and a side-chain into a single band on a multiband might work quicker and better, though there still might be the need to handle unwanted side-effects in the frequency band above the one being compressed.

thanks that's a clever tip! But yeah I'll just get the Fabfilter plug since it's more straight farward and can do a ton of other trick so it's well worth having!
