Lynn,
That is one fat mix...dripping with blues! The volumes, pans and space are all excellent.
There are two things I would do if I were mixing:
1. add a tiny, and I mean tiny bit of reverb to the snare...use pre delay so that it kicks in after the snare hit.
2. on your vocals and guitar solos in some places you are right on the beat...I would nudge them back ever so slightly so it sounds like your playing behind the beat...like the old jazz cats.

I love the tune, I love your vocals and I love the guitar work...that organ is sooooo fat too! Great job!

Thanks Lynn,
The changes I suggested should be very minute. Cosmetic. Your performance and mix are both top shelf!
I have learned so much from the people in this forum. It's the gift that keeps on giving.
Take care,

Mark, I added a touch of reverb to the snare and took your suggestion about the predelay.  I used the rich sounding room preset in Rematrix Solo.  And, to those who've requested a harmonica, well.... you asked for it.  I couldn't get John Mayall, so you have to settle for me.  It's been 25 years, and I'm a little rusty, but here's a taste of mediocre harp playing.  I hope I don't offend any real harp players.  The good news is, I can keep working on this forever.  Thanks again to all who have contributed!

Lynn, Well there she blows, i.e. harmonica!! Sounds good, but now you have to bring everything full circle and balance it all out. I'm hearing some instrumentation so far back in the mix (unless that's what your shooting for), I have to strain my ear to hear it. I know it's a work in progress and I keep listening to it for the final touches and I know they are coming soon. Can't wait to hear the next mix closer to finished.

Mark, thanks for listening and responding.  I tend to agree with you about the mids.  I've done a remix and scooped the mids a bit, and I hope that clears things up.  I will post it soon.

John, thanks for encouraging me to add the harp!  I believe the instrument you're having difficulty hearing is a rhythm guitar in the left channel during the prechorus and bridge sections.  I will try increasing the volume on that part to see if it helps the production.  I left it down on purpose so as not to cover up the main tracks.  Plus, I pan from front to back as well as left to right.  Thanks again for you time and input.

All the best,
Lynn

Nice one Lynn. I've been listening to a lot of Joe Bonamassa lately and this is right in that ballpark. Harmonica is very tasty and perfectly placed.. I'd like to hear your stuff at a better streaming quality than SC provides, I don't think it does your mixes justice.

Thanks so much, James.  I'd like to be in JB's ballpark, but I know better.  Honestly, my ears aren't quite good enough to hear a big difference in streaming quality as others.  I upload 256k mp3 files, and I'm not sure what the limits are with Soundclick or Soundcloud.  Do you or anyone else have a recommendation for a better format?  My rig can handle most anything, and I'm always looking to improve.

John, thanks for listening again.  Actually, I don't have a paid account to Soundclick, so that's probably why I'm using 246K.  I'll have to look into this.  I'd use Soundcloud, but I don't like the way they automatically play another song after the one you posted.  Often, the two songs that play back to back aren't even in the same genre.  Anyway, thanks, again, for encouraging me to play the harp after all these years.

I think the free Soundclick account streams at 128kbps, no matter what file size you upload. I have an account at Box.net for storage and file transfers (costs about $6 a month) which also lets me stream at 320kbps.

Re: I Must Be In Love (cause I'm singing the blues) 2015/07/07 05:36:59 (permalink)
Hey Lynn!

SoundCloud: I've had pretty good results with SoundCloud myself.  I upload high res WAV files (not MP3).  They ultimately stream at 128kbps, but the difference is with some other services where you upload an encoded MP3, it then gets RE-encoded as 128kbps, so in effect, it's compressed twice.  This is bad for the music.  At least with SoundCloud, my WAV uploads are not not double-encoded. ;)

BandCamp: https://bandcamp.com/help/audio_basics
They also default to 128kbps streaming, but can also do VBR streams.  Also, when you download a song or album from BandCamp, they can deliver it in many formats, including WAV, lossless FLAC, ALAC, AAC, OGG, 320kbps MP3, and more.

Bottom line is streaming is great for demos, but downloads will provide higher fidelity if that's your goal.  BandCamp is great for high fidelity downloads.

I have got quite used to SoundCloud and it is my favourite hosting service at the moment. It's a shame about the streaming bit rate but because I never intend selling my music, I always make my tracks downloadable, which I upload at 320kbps (although for some reason this fact is overlooked by a majority of my "many" *ahem* listeners).
