Fruity Loops 12
Recently released and looks quite interesting. Has anyone got it or tried the demo?

Hi Chance- [I replied on your other thread, but there it is again:] Yes, I've had FL Studio (and Fruity Loops when it was still called that) for years. I don't use a lot of the supplied FX and I've never used the supplied audio or MIDI loops, but I do like its pattern-based sequencing for trying out different song ideas and arrangements, etc. FL Studio 12 has some very nice features (I like the new GUI) and of course the PRV has a well-deserved excellent reputation. -Susan

Hi Susan, What makes FL pattern-based? The Playlist looks like Sonar's TV. Is there something different about it?

I like the scalable interface window and that all the major widgets can be placed anywhere. That makes for really great organisation. That's when I don't like Sonar's fixed unrelenting grey.

Notecrusher Hi Susan, What makes FL pattern-based? The Playlist looks like Sonar's TV. Is there something different about it?
Hi- I don’t know if you’ve tried the free demo or watched any of the videos, but the FL Studio Playlist isn’t really much like SONAR’s TV (although it can be made to be somewhat similar). It holds Patterns (or “Pattern Clips,”) which aren’t tied to any track and can be placed anywhere on any track in the Playlist and moved around freely. Each pattern can contain data from virtually any number of instruments and/or automation clips and can be of pretty much any length. Patterns can consist of MIDI data or audio data via sampler channels or automation or a combination of all three. Audio clips can be dragged directly onto the Playlist as well. Since the patterns can be placed anywhere in the playlist and moved around or replaced at will, it’s very easy to try out different arrangements, which is what I mostly use it for. Here’s a good place to start for more info: https://www.image-line.com/support/FLHelp/html/basics_workflow.htm HTH- -Susan

I use it more than Sonar only because I find it a little more inspiring for electronic genres. When I do orchestra staff or need a staff view I go with Sonar. Also multi channel VSTs are easier to set up in Sonar. FL is really weak at this. In Logic and Reaper you click and option and all 16 tracks are routed to Kontakt. I think recording in Sonar is easier. FL is pattern based.

I know people who use FL and have never touched the mixer. It really depends on what you plan to do in FL.

I'm not sure if you answered my question. I plan on setting up my routing and mixing my tracks -- but in Sonar you don't need the mixer to do those things. Is that also the case in FL?

The FLS Channel Rack holds the sound generators and each channel in the rack has to be linked to a track in the Mixer to output sound. The default link is to the Master track, so for anything other than that you'd have to use the Mixer or Patcher. You can read about Patcher here: https://www.image-line.com/support/FLHelp/html/plugins/Patcher.htm HTH- -Susan

I have FL Studio too. I have had it when it was called Fruity Loops. It is a musician's sequencer. It is not a DAW. Though, these days the distinction is very blurred. It has more in common with a tracker then it does with Sonar. That is why so many Sonar users have it along side Sonar. I would say Reason is more like it or at least would appeal more to Reason users. It has been transformed over the years and can do stuff that Sonar simply can't. But Sonar can do stuff FL Studio can't. Together they make a very potent combination. They are not, in my view, in competition.

...It is a musician's sequencer. It is not a DAW... I'll check it out. Sometimes that's actually all I need, although Cubase is quite the MIDI 'beast' in and of itself, which is the DAW I've been using for the last 2 years now. Thanks for the link Susan & for the info John! Is there anything you could quickly list about what FL can do that Sonar cannot? I'm curious.

It was a law suite that caused the name change. Copyright infringement. I believe Fruity Loops was a cereal before it was a sequencer.

How about stability? The only DAW that seems to have the courage [or audacity] to boast the ultimate in stability vs. the other DAWs is Reaper. So how does FL compare?

I'm not sure how any developer can boast about stability vs another DAW. I'm sure at any given moment and with a particular machine a conclusion can be drawn. However, one would need a good sampling of all the PC type machines out there to make such a boast. This would include desktop, laptop and tablets. Name brand and home built. I remember when Reaper was in version 2 it was a very flaky DAW on my machine. Sonar ran just fine. So did Fruity Loops. I think a developer that says anything about being the most stable is lying. It may be on their machine but not on your machine.

I think they are only talking about their code being stable, they aren't responsible for other third party code, or the configuration a user does to their own computer. I agree it's difficult to measure how stable some product is, the only way to do it though is to test on the same computer. You would add too many variables otherwise.

It always amazes me how some developers spend countless hours, weeks, months or even years on their software, only to release a less-than-stellar demo video of it - even terrible, as many I've seen. If I have do any interest in FL Studio at this point, it's only from the comments here and elsewhere, because it SURE ISN'T from the demo on Music radar! I can see people NOT buying it after watching that waste of 2 minutes. What ever happened to a narrated walk through of the features and benefits, and other options? After all, it's not like they don't have method of recording and doing so. Zheesh! Thank you for the link though Susan. I will have a good look at it on their site.

Hi Jim- You're very welcome! Here's Image-Line's latest video on the 12.1 Beta 2 version: https://youtu.be/R78xKqOpp_gThe opening might not be your kind of music (it's not mine, either) but once you get past the opening few seconds, Scott actually does (IMO) a really good job of describing the new features. I think the whole "FL Studio Guru" series of videos is very well done, but I agree that a lot of others, not so much. Thanks- -Susan
