Sonarworks Headphone Calibration

Sonarworks has released the Reference 3 headphone plug-in which offers a low latency mode in addition to sonic accuracy. This allows using calibrated headphones for real time monitoring and other tasks where low latency is crucial.
The third generation Sonarworks Reference headphone plug-in features a filter phase type slider which allows the engineer to adjust the filter phase type according to the use-case. Currently three filter phase type modes are offered – minimum phase, mixed phase, and linear phase:
  • Minimum phase trades phase linearity for down to 1.13ms latency.
  • Mixed phase mode gives the best of both worlds.
  • Linear phase offers maximum accuracy for mixing, mastering, and other tasks where latency up to 60ms is acceptable.
Sonarworks Reference 3 headphone plug-in also offers a completely reworked interface delivering a more intuitive and pleasant user experience. Tool tips will make it easier to use for those with less experience. Expert engineers will appreciate the advanced settings section as well as the option to customize the target curve for a more personalized sound signature.
The plug-in for digital audio workstations (DAWs) is offered in AU, AAX Native, RTAS and VST plugin formats and is compatible with both OS X and Windows. Currently a single license for Sonarworks Reference 3 headphone plug-in costs 70€/$79 and is available at sonarworks.com/store.

The DAW plug-in can be used with average curves made from numerous samples of the same headphone. Supported headphones can be viewed at: sonarworks.com/headphones/supported-headphones. Those looking for even higher accuracy can buy AKG K712 and Sony MDR-7506 with custom calibration curves.

With the release of Sonarworks Reference 3 headphone plug-in three more calibration files have been added to the average calibration curve library – AKG K141 MKII, AKG K701 and Sennheiser HD598.

Just wanted to report back on this VST. They just released the KRK headphones and I can say that this plugin delivers!  My headphones just opened up and my mixes now translate really well to other systems.  I can't mix on speakers so headphones are my only option.  At $69, this product is a real bargain.  SOS did a thorough review of this VST.  Their overall consensus was positive.

They offer a free demo.  If your headphones are supported, I would definitely give it a try if like me, headphones are your primary monitoring tool.

Peace!
Daniel

After looking at their site, I'm a little confused. The plugin is $69 but only the gives the average frequency response for a given model? But, they will calibrate your headphones for $158 or sell you new calibrated ones for starting at $242. It looks like just the plugin may not be that accurate after all. Average calibration is ~ +/- 3db and individual calibration is +/- 0.9db.

I don't know. Maybe it's best to go big and do the whole thing if your going to do this.  I have 3 models that they support and the plugin is appealing to me, however, I'd probably rather have a pair of individual calibrated ones.

I agree that the custom calibration seems more precise but even using the average curve, the ability to translate a mix was outstanding.  Highly recommended!

Hi dlesaux,

So where did you see the KRK KNS-8400's are supported; did they e-mail you?  I don't see them listed on the website anywhere.

Thanks

Hey rtucker, do you only have the plugin or did you have your phones calibrated? I think calibrating may be the way to go I'm just curious.

I purchased the phones system early on when only about 6-7 phones were supported and I use the standard correction curves provided by Sonarworks.  I would think you could gain something more having your phones calibrated by them but Latvia is a long way to send my prized K701's.

I wish they could get a partner located in other areas that would be closer. If they had something in the states I would send all my phones in for calibration.

Thanks! I didn't realize they were out of Latvia! I'm on the fence, about the plugin because I've got a pair of Sennheiser hd650's and they are already very close to my monitors. But it's is tempting.

Most of our software has been developed based on feedback from forum users, so I thought it’s only fair if we try to give something back! Here’s a 20% discount for all Cakewalk forum members. Enter CakeW-20 on checkout at our store and you will get a 20% price reduction for all products except headphones and the trial pack (which is already super cheap!). Just don’t wait too long - the offer will end on August 31st!

Indeed!  I was chomping at the bit waiting for a sale after trying the Demo...
Worth twice the price ( but I'm poor  - literally - if not for the stuff I sell at KVR and the band I'd be homeless and penniless - been trying to find work...but can't get hired...no one wants a 55 year old man...they want kids - so thank God for the band)
