SONAR Browser Grudges

1. When browser loop function is disabled, the browser won't preview the entire audio samples. The preview just ends prematurely, 99% of the time.

2. When working in sample rates at 48k and above, I get the "Dropout" popup and sometimes SONAR freezes because it can't complete the process as fast enough as I'm going through my sample library - guess it has to do with SONAR up-sampling the 44.1k samples before it previews them - this makes it very slow for me since I'm used to FL Studio's snappy browser.

3. If I select an audio sample in the Media tab and switch to the Synth Rack, the selection in the Media tab goes away and I have to scroll through to find it again.

It's for reasons like this and others that have just been piling up and messing with my productivity and sanity. I'm not having a good year with SONAR. My workflow is just going downhill.

    Moved to SONAR for discussion.

Are you still using X3? Many of these issues have been addressed in Platinum since there were major enhancements to the browser.
Please read this post for details about the browser enhancements.

I am, actually (still running X3) but I'm glad to have found out about the improvements.

I will give the post a read. Thanks!

I'll have to agree with the OP and confirm at least two of the issues that he has mentioned:

    • The Media Browser does not properly preview really long wave files. As mentioned, it will only play the first 30 seconds or so and then stop or loop from the beginning, regardless of the looping setting.
    • If you are auditioning looping files (MIDI or Audio) from the Media browser, switch to one of the other Media Browser tabs (Plugins, Synth Rack etc.)  and then return to the loop browser tab, the currently playing files will no longer be highlighted. If you have a nice groove going and the folder contains many files, this can be extremely frustrating because you no longer have any way of knowing which files are currently being auditioned.
    • I'd also like to add my BIGGEST annoyance with Media Browser right now. It does not properly loop MIDI files unless they were previously groove-clip looped or the loop maker happens to end the loop exactly on a measure boundary. This means that when you audition many MIDI files, although they play fine during the first pass, once the DAW loops, they will go out of sync. The only current workaround is to drag the loop into Track View and apply Groove-clip looping via Ctrl-L. Media Browser should be smart enough to do this automatically. Studio One handles these MIDI files properly and also allows you to audition multi-track MIDI files on a track-by-track basis from within its browser.
All of these issues have persisted across several versions of SONAR, including Platinum.

Maybe that's why it's called preview? Like the try before you buy in iTunes?

Funny thing is, it worked in Sonar 8.5.3
Even more strange is the video with Seth and Brandon where Seth mentions it as a new feature.

Re: SONAR Browser Grudges 2015/07/14 07:15:57 (permalink)
I had some of the problems you mention. I had a thread open recently and many people helped.
Here's how we reproduced some of the issues:
    1. Start new project, use Normal template.
    2. Delete the Preview bus. (probably the first thing most people do to save space)
    3. Save the project.
    4. Reopen and try preview some audio clips. Will not work because there is no Preview Bus selected, so select one (say, Master)
    And now the weirdness starts.
Different people report different things, such as some clips not sounding, some starting in the middle of the clip, and even Sonar hanging when moving too fast between clips (as you report here). I even found if you close and reopen Sonar and this project, it will be different clips that misbehave.

scook jumped in to help and the solution is to select a Preview Bus (say Master) and save the project immediately, then reopen it. That worked several times now for me (which is not proof that it will work for everyone).

It seems the act of deleting the Preview bus throws Sonar's Media previewer into an undefined state. This undefined state persists in the project, not in Sonar itself.

You might like to try selecting a bus, then immediately saving and reopenening your project.
In future, when I start a new project, I will first select a different bus, save and reopen the project, and only then delete the Preview bus.

I have reported this to the Bakers (as have many people - but now, hopefully with scook's analysis, the Bakers will be able to reproduce it and fix it at last).
