Sonar on Windows 10 Preview 10122

Hey,

Just installed the core of Cakewalk Platinum on a 10122 build of Windows 10 Preview (64-bit), and a very cursory test shows it seems to work well !

As expected, the Windows 8 driver for my Roland Quad Capture didn't work and I'll have to wait for an official release of Roland, hopefully soon after the launch of Windows 10.

What surprised me very much: by choosing compatibility option with Windows 7, I could install the Tascam FW-1884 1.80 drivers, without any FireWire Legacy tricks, and it works ! (same, very cursory test, playing of a project in Sonar + listening music with Groove (aka Xbox music) when configured as default sound peripheral).

What is your overall views of Windows 10? I have it installed on a tablet that was running Win 8.1. I am not sure I like it yet. I sort of like 8.1 better. I do like that apps can run in a window though. My build is 10162.

Both my Roland Octa-Capture and Studio-Capture work on the Win 10 Preview.  I'm on the latest 10166 version.  My Behringer BCF2000 works on Win 10 and even my Frontier Tranzport works in Win 10 but I had to install it in a Vista compatibility mode.

When the RTM Win 10 is released I'll be moving to Win 10 for my primary system.   The Win 10 Preview I have installed is on a separate hard drive, not one of my "operational" drives.

Fireberd, did you have to re install anything after you upgraded to 10? I am really nervous about making the jump to 10. I'm running 2 Studio-Captures synced together and the thought of having to reinstall all this stuff is really becoming a concern.

I've been running Sonar on Windows 10 since the first preview and it's been rock solid.

The ONLY thing that's holding me back is Roland/Edirols incredibly stupid insistence on blocking their drivers from future operating systems, and THEN taking forever to release new drivers for new operating systems. They've had months to do this. It basically takes one change in their driver files.
People have been complaining to them about this since the Vista beta, but they don't listen. I've never come across another Pro Audio hardware manufacturer who does this.

I think you will find most manufacturers won't release Win10 drivers until it is fully released.

In a way I don't blame them restricting the OS as people would end up asking for support on an OS that even MS doesn't support yet.

And I just finished upgrading to the latest, 10166. This may be  very close to "it", as I see few signs of beta/preview other than the little message on the lower right.

SONAR should pretty much be Windows 10 compatible as is. We're already using all the newer Windows compliant API's so AFIK it should be fine. We're doing some testing in-house before release anyway so if any compatibility problems are identified we'll fix them. If anyone comes across a SONAR specific compatibility issue please let us know...

The big guys all have Windows 10 drivers out. They want them out for testing, if nothing else. Intel, nVidia, AMD, Realtek, etc all have Windows 10 drivers out and available for download. It tends to be the smaller or more specialty companies that lag in drivers.

Sidroe, I have a totally separate Win 10 Preview installation.  It wasn't an upgrade to an existing OS.  Its on my backup system and triple booted with Win 7/8.1/10.  I'll find out how the upgrade goes when the RTM is downloaded.  But, every new Preview version "upgrade" has not corrupted Sonar or my installed equipment drivers.

RME drivers work fine with Windows 10 on a 4 year old Dell laptop that I've been using for testing

I notice RME have released Windows 10 divers for firewire, but not for usb. Interesting given that frewire is all but dead on PC hardware, particularly laptops.

You would be forgiven for thinking so, but I suspect you haven't been reading about thunderbolt 3/USB-C. FireWire is dead... Long live FireWire...

Indeed I have not! I knew Apple had run withit but last I heard PC manufacturers were hesitant due to expense and lack of peripherals. Sounds promising though. Heres hoping it doesn't suffer the same compatibility problems as firewire did. I got very tired of chasing laptops with Texas Instruments controller chips just to make my firewire desks work. I have found the compatability of USB to be  joy since biting te bullet and replacing my aging rigs:)

Try AZ Controller from member azslow3. He has it working perfectly for the Alphatrack and I'm sure lots of folks have the Tranzport as well. If it doesn't work out of the box, he'll probably tweak it for the Tranzport. See the link in my sig.

There is no problem with my Frontier Tranzport.  I don't need another driver, it works perfectly using the Vista compatibility mode to install.  I had to do the same thing in Windows 8/8.1.

Neither Universal Audio or Lynx Studio are commenting on Windows 10. Both of them tend to be slow with testing new drivers, UA being the slowest. In reality, Windows 10 will offer no real advantage over Windows 8.1 other than cosmetics and those aren't required for audio recording.

I bought a Edirol midi board thinking since Roland owned Cakewalk some things would work together better and that didn't really happen and they are not as fast on driver updates as I would like. Now that Gibson owns Cakewalk I'm thinking of buying a new Les Paul. It's kind of a thin justification, but I think I'll stick with it.
