Help with Sonar 8.5: Intermittent sluggishness in recording

Hi. I am using Sonar 8.5 Producer Edition. I have not updated because 1)I still have XP on that computer, and 2)I like the older interface,  Up to last week, I must stress, it was working, in fact, perfectly within my recording system. My computer is dual-core Intel, custom built, with 2 gigabytes ram. I also use an M-Audio Delta 4000 audio card, because in the days I bought my computer, bundled sound cards were not ASIO compliant. Then, last week, I began to experience intermittent delays in audio recording, sometimes up to 2 minutes. (Sometimes it would process quickly, sometimes not.) I'd also like to note that all other functions of Sonar have continued to work normally, such as opening time, saving, cutting/pasting, monitoring recorded tracks, etc. I should also add that I de-fragged the hard drive, thinking that cpu processing might be the problem. However, it didn't make any difference. Any suggestions? So far, this problem is more annoying than serious, but I would like to correct it as soon as possible, to make recording more convenient and to avoid possible worsening of the situation.
Thanks!

    Hi Musicmystery:

Welcome to the Cakewalk forums! You can check or consider the things below:

You can check the latency setting for your audio interface under SONAR (Options>Audio>General Tab, Mixing Latency section) and try to lower it somewhere between 64 samples and 256 samples (Buffer Size). Use a setting in that range that works for you without causing pops, clicks, dropouts, etc., during playback/recording. During recording, it should be set as low as possible without causing problems. During playback, it can be raised, if needed.

Did you try using the DPC Latency checker to see if some driver is messing up your latency performance? The DPC Latency Checker can be downloaded from here: http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml

Try to re-install the drivers for your audio interface, and see if that helps (after a re-install of the drivers use the lower latency settings mentioned above).

You can try to restore your computer to a time when all was working OK (using system restore), but, as I recall,  system restore wasn't really good until Windows Vista. But, it did work for some people, so it may be worth a try, at your on risk. You have to decide, so if it messes up something, don't blame me. Use that as a last resort.

    Hope that helps.

Up to 2 minutes? That's some latency!
If really nothing has changed, been installed etc. without your knowing (is your DAW PC connected to the internet?) it could be the hard drive filling up or a hardware problem developing (memory going bad - it does happen).

I also use an M-Audio Delta 4000 audio card

I am reasonably familiar with M-Audio gear, but I have not heard of a 'M-Audio Delta 4000', do you have a link to the card ?
