Media clip previewer works randomly, even hangs Sonar. Fixed yet?

Go to the browser, click the little arrow next to the Media tab to select a preview bus (Master is good), then start previewing the sounds by opening a folder and clicking on each sound clip file in turn.

In my setup, some will sound and some wont.
Even more strangely, if I close and reopen Sonar, it will be different ones!
And worst of all, if I click too fast (or move using my down-arrow key too fast), Sonar will hang.

Anyone have the same experience with Platinum? I am still on X3e. I would like to know if this is fixed yet.

Tech details:
Sonar X3e 64, Acer Aspire 8951G i7 laptop, Windows 7 64bit, Cakewalk UA-25EX USB2 interface (latest drivers).

    Thank you.
It works in my 8.5.3 setup.
Looks like not all things broken in changing to the X-series have been found even yet.

You don't get this? That's interesting.
Just to confirm: Master as preview bus, set to auto and loop off.
When I open the one shot folder I initially see many files named Clapxx.wav
When I click on one, it may or may not sound. It's about 50/50.
Restart Sonar and it is different ones that work or don't work.
You can also move the cursor down with the arrow keys and they may or may not sound.
Go too fast and Sonar hangs (hourglass mouse cursor) Reboot PC needed.
The only significant difference I see to your setup is you are on Win8.1 and have much more RAM.

I have seen this (samples not paying) but I didn't realise that the ones that won't play vary. I just thought some of the loops were corrupted.

Normally I would use the default setup for audio loop preview but I did redirect output to the master bus to test for this post. Using the recipe provided, I could not make preview fail in X3 or the new SONAR. Did not matter how fast or slow I scrolled through the one shots. One thing I will point out is do not play the one shot wav files with the "Preview at Host Tempo" enabled.

Yes, I thought that there was something wrong with files at first. I couldn't imagine that preview in browser so seriously broken. Amazingly crucial bug...

I just did what the OP said and they all play just fine (all claps).

    Preview to master.
    Loop off, auto preview.
Click on every sample (using up&down arrows keys works too).
    Foxboro Update 1 & Asio4all.

Turning off "Preview at host tempo" doesn't help?

In my opinion, one-shots are supposed to play "unlocked" to the host tempo.

Your one-shot could be 4 bars of drums that you still need to play at host tempo...

Karyn, if you want to hear what I am talking about WRT the "Preview At Host Tempo" setting and the one shots bundled with SONAR, preview the Hat_001.wav. I would not be surprised if the setting ultimately freaks out the GroovePlayer plug-in.

The name "one-shot" implies a single hit,  like a snare,  but simply means a sample that is played once and not immediately looped.  The content of the sample could be a single percussive hit where host tempo is irrelevant, or it could be a melodic sequence that relies on syncing to host tempo.

@Doctor Avalanche: Yes, the latest drivers. I also have an Edirol UA-101, Tascam US-1641, US-1800 and PreSonus 22VSL - Happens with all of them.

@scook: The default is NO bus connection at all, to which it reverts every time you start up.

In 8.5.3 there is a combobox and you can see there is nothing selected, but in X3e you first need to go into the menu and then the submenu. So 8.5.3 is more intuitive in that regard.

"Preview at Host Tempo" seems not to affect the phenomenon one way or another on my machine.
    ---
    Postscript:
I have now restarted with a fresh project, template "Normal".
To my surprise, this template already contains a "Preview" bus and the Audio Preview Bus is routed to it by default!

Not only that, every sound clip works (so far -there are THOUSANDS!) and even more astonishingly, I can run down the list with the cursor and Sonar does not hang!

This explains why some people are reporting the effect whilst others say they do not see it.
    Am investigating further...

If this is the issue I think you are talking about ... then there's a relatively quick workaround ...

Previews seem to bind the Track/Synth you first previewed the individual midi clips on.
Furthermore, if you delete a track on which the preview was played, it subsequently won't output any sound.

gswitz put me onto the workaround here:
    http://forum.cakewalk.com/Media-Browser-clips-bind-to-last-used-Synth-for-Preview-for-the-clip-m3076963.aspx

    - Undock your browser (by drag)
    - Close the window with X (top right)
    - Open a new Browser (B) (and dock as desired by dragging back into place)
    - The previews should play with your chosen preview instrument from the Media tab > Synth Preview Output.

Further investigation: Changed selected bus from Preview to Master, restart Sonar, and behold, now Sonar remembers the setting to Master! And all sounds work.

Deleted the Preview bus, saved project, restart Sonar and open same test project - Media preview remembers to use Master and all sounds work, no hang.

Very strange. The projects that are causing the trouble were all initiated in Sonar X-something, but I have no way of knowing in which version. But I am beginning to think it happens only with projects started in previous X-series versions.

OK, I've got it: It has NOTHING to do with older projects being imported into X3e.

Here are the steps, if someone feels inclined, please try in the new Foxpro release.

    I create a new "Normal" project in X3 64bit.

It automatically creates a Preview bus and the audio previewer selects it by default. All sounds work.

I delete the Preview bus, save the project, start Sonar X3 again and reopen the project.

Now no sounds work until I select a bus (in my case, I chose Master).

And now I have the phenomenon: Some sounds work and some don't.

    Reproducible.

Another thing I've noticed: the clips that do work do NOT always start from the beginning! This is especially noticeable in loop mode. The very first time I select a sound, the strike is NOT at the beginning.

If I later come back to a sound I have tried previously, it will now start from the beginning.

I can reproduce the problem in X3 and the new SONAR. The key to reproducing the issue is attempting to play files with the audio preview unassigned. If the audio preview is reassigned prior to playback everything works fine. Also the problem only exists in the current session. Restarting SONAR and the problem goes away. Here is the recipe I end up with:
    1. Create a new project using the default normal template
    2. Delete the preview bus from the bus pane.
    3. Open the one shots folder in the media browser
    4. From the media tab menu, turn off "Preview at Host Tempo" and "Loop Preview"
    5. Play Clap_01,  Clap_02 and Clap_03
    6. Assign the audio preview bus to the master bus in the media tab menu
    Result:
Clap_03 immediately plays. Clap_01 and Clap_02 will not play and a pattern of two one shots not playing is established. I have not bothered to figure out the full pattern of playing and non-playing one shots but there is a pattern. In this example there are always 2 one shots which will not play after some series of one shots which do play. Pick different one shots in step 5 to create different sequences of playing and non-playing one shots.

This seems like a pretty easy problem to avoid. Still it should not happen. Moved to "Problem Reports." Please file an official problem report and add the CWBRN to the subject. May want to reference this thread in the problem report.

I am not noticing a pattern.
It is different ones every time I restart Sonar X3e and reopen the project.
I will make a problem report with a reference to this thread.
