Recommend me a mic.. vocal charactistics in post.

I am thinking I need a new mic. My voice is a bit unique. Everyone I call on the phone knows right away who it is. No prank ca for me!
My vocal chords have bowed a little over time and my voice has become a bit more airy. I was a first tenor in school, and a voice major. I cannot hit the high notes that I once could but still, every time I call someone new, every time I go through a drive through window... EVERY TIME... they say, "Is that all mam"?
So I have an airy, female sounding voice, not too high but certainly not low.

I've been thinking about trying an SM7b with a Cloudlifter. I would try a Cloud R44 but they don't fit my budget. The R-122 looks interesting but it too much and too much of a turkey shoot. I'd love to stay under 500 bucks but I don't know if I can. I have several MXL mics, the original 2001, MXL ribbon (I forget the model), S-57 of course... I wonder if just adding the extra gain from a Cloudlifter would make the difference. Maybe I should do that, and see how it affects the mics I already have. ALso have a Samsom dynamic and a nice small condenser.

I am open to suggestions if you know a mic that you would go to on instinct for a voice like mine.

Thanks,

Michael Jackson loosely fit that description and used an SM7 on Thriller. Any way you can try out some mics before you buy one? Maybe an ADK Vienna or Hamburg.

I would second the ADK Hamburg suggestion.

It also depends on the music.  An Oktava 319 can sound good on higher voices since it is all mid rangy.

I also picked up a CAD Trion 8000 tube mic at B&H for $200 (they are back to $400 most places as I understand). I'm not sold on it - it is very temperamental to the room and placement, but can sound super nice on my female vocalist.  For $200, tho, it only has to work on a few things.

My daughter has an SM7b and she is visiting next month. I'll get her to bring it so I can try it.
Going to order a Cloudlifter. I'm going to try it with several mics I have and with the SM7, from what I've read it really makes a good dynamic mic like the SM7 "be all it can be", supposed to help the MXL R144 too, and I have one of them. Logical next step I think.
I checked out the Hamburg, there is a MK8 now, 349. I think that is the same price as the SM7b.

I've looked at the KSM44 for several years, I'd love one but once I get in the 1k range I start thinking I may as well spend 1.5K then what's another 500 bucks, pretty soon I am way over my head.

Thanks again, I'm looking at the Gauge ECM87 too, it's ony 149 bucks and looks good. I have one of their small condenser mics, the ECM84 and it's good.

I'll let you know what I think of the Coudlifter.
A friend from a band I played in circa 1970 asked me to do lead vocals on a song for him and I want it to be the best it can be.

I have the opposite problem. 50+ years of smoking has taken it's toll but I do find the SM7b works fine... it has adjustable eq built in that makes a huge difference in sound- so make sure you give the settings a try-out. I personally find condenser mics to sterile but that's just my opinion.

    Thanks sr!

I like dynamics a lot too, condensors get really pricey, really fast.
I ordered the Cloudlifter this afternoon, I think it will make a difference, in a good way.

Good move on the cloudlifter because dynamics definitely need a preamp- You might also want to look into a RE20. On another forum (not the purple place) a similar question came up about dynamic mics and the general feel was that you really can't go wrong with either a Sm7b a RE-20 or a Beyer M88.

Thanks guys. I got the Cloudlifter yesterday and hope to be able to use it tomorrow, and next Tuesday and Wednesday. My "studio" is by necessity, on the end of the dining room table right now and my wife makes a lot of noise, talks a lot... she works on Tuesday and Wednesday this time of year. She is a CPA, in the spring she works all the time. I'll check those mics out. Thanks!
