Most probably not the case, but... Are you sure that your first track is really recordable? I mean can you press record button with mouse?
You can:
1) install my plug-in (see the signature), add it to Control Surfaces and attach nanokontrol2 to it, open plug-in Property Page (from Utilities menu) and watch "Last MIDI event" when pressing different buttons. Do you see some signal coming? How far is it different from messages sent by another buttons?
2) without any control surface plug-in in configuration, record MIDI track with nanokontrol2 as the input. Check the same information in the event list
If everything looks normal, which Sonar Control Surface plug-in you use for nonokontrol2?
