Extreme comping woes [SOLVED], corrupted project template

I am still having troubles with comping and want to know if it is a setting(s) that I have enabled or if it is a way of approaching comping that I don't understand. There are three main things that I either don't understand or that are “broken.” These are hard to explain, so I hope I do a good job.

For example, let's say that I have three grouped tracks (two mic'd tracks and one DI) of acoustic guitar audio with three or four takes (Take Lanes) in each track. I have the auto cross fade set to 25ms.

1)
The takes lanes don't number consistently across tracks. For example, if I record four take lanes across three tracks, the numbers don't coincide with each other. The only one that is consistent across the tracks is Take1 (T1). The others may be 2,3 and 4 in one track and 6,7 and 8 in another. I have to go in and re-number the takes to keep track of the Take Lanes.

2)
Having recording mode set to "group clips in folders," the clips are grouped nicely in multiple tracks to begin, but as I comp, the newly created clips will sometimes re-group so that the clips are grouped by track instead of take, having all of the Take Lanes in a track grouped together. I have to go in and select the groups, un-group them and re-group them by take.

3)
Finally (and worst) after I comp and make the selections (splits), I find that there are clicks as the Now Time crosses each split. As I try to adjust the cross fades, the process is erratic and useless. When I move the cross-fade icon left or right, it behaves like slip edit (cropping) and it creates more splits and leaves little snippets beside the existing clips. When I move the cross-fade icon up, it doesn't increase the cross fade, all of the fades (muted clips included) fade in the same direction. Regardless, there is more clicking as the now time passes all the splits. All of this is the case when I use the Smart Tool, or the Comping Tool.

Even as I audition the selections in the Take Lanes, there are sharp clicks at the beginning and the end of the clips that I am auditioning.

Like I said, I hope I have described these problems well. The bottom line is that, for me, comping is broken and useless. I really need it to work for the type of recording I do, and it is supposed to be one of the best editing features of Sonar. I am surprised that I haven't read anything about this on the forum, that is why I think that I either have a setting wrong, or a bad install of Sonar.

Thanks in advance,
Tom

I've just tried to reproduce the first issue in a new project created from the Normal project template.

    1. Create three audio tracks.
    2. Select Comping recording mode.
    3. Arm all the three tracks.
    4. Set a loop and punch-in region and start recording for four loops.
    5. Expand Take lanes.

As shown in the screenshot below, I see that the lane numbers are consistent across tracks.
I tried again without setting a loop and punch region in step 4 (just manually recorded 4 takes) and still got no problem.

Could you post similar steps for your second and third issues so that we can follow them and see if they are reproducible?

    Tak T.

For issue number 3 - this sounds like you have the "Split clips at 0 crossing" unchecked in preferences.  If you check that box, it should resolve the issue.

I've been leaving this one for the heavy comping users to address as I am unable to reproduce any of it in a new project. In general, this sounds like some sort of project corruption that has evolved over time or possibly an issue with the compatibility of project templates created in earlier releases of SONAR. Are you able to reproduce any of this this in a new project started from the default Normal project template that ships with Platinum?

Some of this could also be due to more-or-less expected behaviors related to the numbering of new lanes after a lot of recording/deleting/undoing of takes has been done or inadvertent slip-editing of one side of a comping boundary which can break comping and cross-fade functionality.

If it's only happening in a big project that's been around for a while, it may be difficult to piece together the workflow that brought it to this point. But if you can reproduce it in a new project with just the three tracks, and an initial set of four grouped takes, it will be a lot easier for the Bakers to investigate.

Known takelane issues here, sadly Platinum does not fix many or any of these...

    Search for 'take':

C'mon bakers... 8 issues how about a special takelane monthly update?

I am going to try using the Normal template.  It does feel like something is corrupt.  I have been using the same customized template file for a while.
