Caveman
Please listen, all crits are welcomed! I started this in 2011, wanting something simple, some kind of butt rock I thought, just so I could learn up some Sonar goodness. Here it is, a mere four years later. I'd seriously love any comments that can help me make it better!! http://www.songsbytom.com it's the first song in the player on the right . . . cheers, -Tom

Hiya Tom, There's nothing I can say that would help you to improve your song I'm afraid Tom. As always, your songs make me smile I have to ask... Is it just me, or does the early part of the song sit over to the left a little? Might just be the vocals and bass, but I think its the drums too. A bit later in the song, bass and vocals seem to have moved back towards centre. Might be me, and I'm listening on headphones as usual, so I'm going to pick up on this kind of thing, more so than listening on speakers. Nice guitar work... I like that cheers andy

Sounds most excellent, my fellow caveman. You probably already know my advice. Remember the past, but focus on the future and make it even better. Time to evolve forward to your next song. :)

This is really good just the way it is Tom. Mix is pretty good, with just the right touch of crunchiness in the drums and bass to give it nice weight. Guitars are good throughout. Some of the vocal panning is different than what you usually hear, but it sounds okay, though I'd prefer to hear panned delays instead of panning the vocal itself. Good work! Regards, Dan

Mix is generally OK does sound a little all down the middle for me, thanks for sharing.

thanks Andy Synkrotron! There are definite moments of throwback hard panning, I was shooting for the style of the maybe early 70's - the whole song is about a throwback so I thought it might fit. thanks, Dan! I appreciate the comments, particularly the "crunchiness" - which often comes with it's evil twin , "mud" - a better mixer would clean this up, I'm still not satisfied but . . . - as Walt said, time to evolve rather than devolve! Lots more tunes to do! and thanks Bapu! Hey, it seems I'm not alone in starting a project and getting it completed years later!!! Kudos to all the weekend warriors here. cheers, -Tom

Welcome to the club of procrastination ;) I, too, love the song and the throwback vibe. The lyrics are clever and the message is timely. The panning is weird, for me, but beyond that, this is a hit.

Well done Tom. I agree clever lyrics and you have a vocal delivery that grabs attention, sounds like you have plenty of fun doing it. I cant really crit much, it a simple track which works well. Too long for my taste, but the many changes probably make Tom...well sound like Tom! Good stuf, Cian

Haha, yeah, I've got a 1974 quadraphonic mix of Black Sabbath's Paranoid and that has some really off the wall panning going on whack Too long for my taste
LOL! Cian, don't bother listening to my eight minute long track then (which of course means, please listen to my eight minute song...)

Loved the tune, Tom, so much so that I would say that I'd like to hear a little more clarity (or maybe level) on the vocal because I think the songs message is that good.

Tom, Nice one, very clever. You sound a little like Alice Cooper;) Like it. Also listened to some of your Jazz piano playing while on your site. Very diverse talent. Regards

very nice song + mix ! enjoyed listening to it and you can tell the band really enjoys the music. since you're asking....and just hoping it helps....here's some things I'd change (I'm still learning to mix, so don't shoot me...). the vocal would benefit from some growl/grunt, maybe add some saturation and a little reverb or delay. also sounds like singer was a little too close to the mic (hear some lips/mouth noises). would take 0.1 or 0.2db off the vocals overall to let it sit better in the mix. would add a steep curve EQ at 5024 to the drums for some presence (they sound just a little distant, but fine).

Thanks much! Cian - trade you voices any day of the week! Lynn - thanks, let's start a Throwback Club. Phil - thanks for thinking the message is important, I agree, but it's all in vain, isn't it? Progress wins. Markno999 - I really appreciate your compliment, and I'll be getting a bunch more solo piano stuff up soon. I'm pretty sure Alice Cooper also played a mean cocktail piano :) Wouter - Good ears! I totally agree on the mouth noises, I could do without those. I'll go drop a little compression off of that vocal. That's also a very specific drum EQ recommendation, sounds like some upper snare or hi-hat presence you are wanting? I will check it out, thanks! And I'll pass along your compliments to the band next time I see them. Probably when I brush my teeth later. :) cheers, - Tom

OK, I get the humour in that one. It's got that retro feel, though when the Farfisa (?) comes in sounds more 60's to me. Mix-wise the balance does seem a little one-sided in certain sections. But either way it's a fun tune!

Hi Tom, It's a nice tune and good mix ! As you were asking... I was expecting and missed an accent on about 1:00 right after "Caveman" word. It exists, but on my taste all the intro was moving to this entry point and it's asking for a big accent (maybe just a volume) Love beautiful EP sound and just feel that it disappears a little too fast around 2:40 Anyway, it's just a personal opinions and your own vision as an artist have always a higher priority :) Again, well done! Cheers, Julian

Catching up on a few responses - Phil - that's a tremendous compliment! Much obliged! Ohgrant - Glad you liked it! Feel free to pick a few nits if you have any . . . Julian - thanks and I love that sort of observational criticism, I'll reconsider what is going on at those points you mentioned. Thanks for being specific! Jamesg1213 - Ah, I did get carried away with the panning! Glad you liked it. For some reason, in Sonar I have never really loved how it handles panning, I always hear a -slight- degradation in the audio. I know if you choose to radically pan a file that is already stereo, it's going to maybe introduce some kind of phasing? I just got out of my depth so if anyone can toss me a life preserver of knowledge, many thanks. :) Warren - dude thanks, I appreciate it. Four years on this sucker! Although in actual time spent, probably only a month! SteveC - gotcha, that farfisa I just call "cheese organ" and it does belong in the 60's! peace out, -Tom

Olivier, Boy, I sure appreciate any reference to Dire Straits - they/Mark Knopfler are on my desert island playlist for sure. Also, thank you so much for recommending I put lyrics up, for the non-native English speakers! That blows my wig off. Translated - I'm honored! and it is done. Next time you get to my site, check out the lyrics page if you wish. cheers, -Tom

Hey, Tom, Very cool song with a fun retro vibe, great songwriting, clever lyrics and excellent performances! The offbeat panning kind of threw me off a little, but I remember the early Beatles stuff was mostly done like that. I really like the vocal work and the Iron Butterfly/Vanilla Fudge style guitar solo was "vintage cool". Your song "Mayans" was also really a blast of goodness, too, and "Here Comes The Square was a dynamite instrumental! Really nice work, Tom, have a good one, buddy! Bob
