Hi. I would just solo the buses one by one (drums, bass, etc), and do a real time bounce for each bus.
But others may know better.
Best of luck.

If all of your tracks are sent to submix busses before going to Master, what Ken suggests is the best way. If you aren't using submix busses, it gets a lot more complicated. You'll have to mute all the tracks except what you want in each stem, then export the audio. Then, mute the tracks you exported and unmute the tracks for the next stem. That's the simplest way, but you will have to keep track of which tracks are in which stem.

if you want to send stems to someone else for mixing in their software, you don't need to do a "bounce" - you need to do an EXPORT.  select TRACKS as the source and you can select or deselect any track you want to export.  you should also remove any dithering done if you're sending to someone else for them to put into their project (Sonar by default has some type of dithering always on, this can be changed if desired for default).

Re: How do you create stems to be sent for mixing 2015/07/22 16:20:18 (permalink)
* First, make a copy of your project if you don't want to destroy it.
* Set the global tracks Setting to the bit depth you want, say 24bit at 44k1Hz
* Bounce down tracks to create the stems you want. Bounce even single track stems, to remove any trimmed Audio.
* Delete the original tracks.
* For those bounced stems that do NOT start at the beginning of the song, Stretch the beginning of the bounced track to the start of the song and bounce again. This is important because the engineer cannot guess where the stems are supposed to start, so here you are adding blank space between the song start and the beginning of, say, a guitar solo stem. Note that stems may be shorter than the song.
* Copy your Project to another Folder, first checking "copy Audio" (Default, I think). This will copy only those tracks that are in your Project (not the snippets still Floating around in your Audio Folder)
* If you now look in the Audio Folder in the new Project, you should find all stems, ready to be sent.
* Finally, name and number each stem so it will make sense to the engineer.

That's how I do it.

There is no need to do an individual export for each stem. You can create all the stems in one export if the buses are already assigned to receive the audio content you want for each individual bus/stem.

On the 'Export Audio' panel choose 'Buses' under the 'Source Category'.

Under 'Source Buses' highlight all the buses which you wish to export.

Set your other export options as desired. Click 'Export'.

Viola! All your stems in one pass!
