Windows 10 upgrade question

Here in the UK we won't get the upgrade till next week (29th)

I just wanted to ask people about their upgrade process as the email I've had from microsoft seems to suggest installing the upgrade on top of your existing copy of windows. I'm assuming I can still do that by creating a bootable DVD once I've downloaded windows 10?

All my past experience has been to wipe the current os, reformat and do a complete fresh install which obviously is a huge and time consuming job of re-installing all software and maybe even having to apply for new licences for some so can take a long time.

I much prefer to do that for various reasons but am just wondering if microsoft have made the upgrade/overlay process worth doing?

What's the general consensus with those who've upgraded and had previously done it the long way round?

Steve

I upgraded over top of Win 8.1 and it was flawless.
I've been using it since the first the Preview Edition was
released.  I'm currently running the release candidate.
It is a welcome improvement over Win 8.1 IMO

Don't you now have an assortment of folders still left over from windows 8.

I would be upgrading from windows 7 and the only time I attempted an upgrade on top of windows XP (or even windows 98) it created a horrible mess of left over folders and I had lots of driver conflicts and blue screens so I vowed never again.

Will it completely remove all trace of all trace of windows 7 apart from my downloads, documents and other crucial files and folders? I'd be amazed and delighted if that were the case.

Cheers Larry

Larry, did your upgrades your music PC or a different one?

I suppose I can image my win7 machine and go back if things go awry.

It actually creates a folder called Windows.old for your old version of Windows...
As for drivers and such, mine was perfectly fine..but I was also running Win 8.1,
so can't attest to how it will do with Win 7.  It would be wise to run an image first,
and then do the upgrade...just in case you do have to roll back....

I'll either run an image or more likely I'll upgrade my windows 7 32bit which is on a separate drive and gathering dust.
Hopefully I'll be allowed to install it twice although come to think of it that might be an issue but it shouldn't be.

The registry settings always get inherited on upgrades by design and often that's what screws it.

I've always seen lots errors and warnings in the event viewer after upgrades. You don't get that so much with a fresh install.
