Using the touchpad on a laptop for Sonar seems very sensitive

Hello all,

I was wonder if anyone has ever experienced this:  I just installed Sonar Platinum on my laptop and when trying to adjust anything using the touch pad; most likely volume, the faders move so quick, its as if I set my mouse sensitivity to the max. This problem happens to anything that requires an adjustment (volume, panning, etc..). It doesn't seem to have this problem when scrolling; for instance trying to view full console or tracks views.  I can't seem to see where I could adjust this in the Sonar preferences.  I'm starting to wondering if this is a bug because I remember this issue since X3. I just never really made an issue about it cause I was always using a mouse.  So yes, in order for me to work around this problem, I use a mouse. But there are times when you're mobile and may have forgotten your mouse. You would hope that when trying to do a mix, there wouldn't be any technical difficulties.

Is there anyone out there experiencing this same thing?

Your response is greatly appreciated.

You can adjust the sensitivity of your track pad in Windows.

It's similar to selecting the rotation of a knob or the speed of a slider when using a mouse or mouse wheel. By modifying it with the shift key you make the movements finer, that is, slower.

    Hey Mike V.,

Thanks for the advice. I went ahead and gave that a try and was able to find out a couple of things.  First off, I did make those adjustments with the mouse sensitivity through the control panel and I did notice a difference; somewhat.  There is an option I also had to make sure was not checked off and that was “Enhanced Pointer Precision”.  Once this was unchecked the “over-abundance” of mouse sensitivity was definitely gone, however the performance still doesn’t come close to when using an actual mouse.  Things I noticed after making those adjustments (lowering mouse sensitivity in windows, unchecking the enhanced pointer precision) was that if I was adjusting a fader, and assuming the fader was set in the middle, if I clicked and swiped up to raise the volume, the knob would shoot all the way down and freak-out; so-to-speak. It was like something was keeping the knob from moving up, it would just stay at the bottom and flutter as I swiped up.  However, if I were to click and swipe up in an area of the fader that was below the knob I would have more success. But it wasn’t consistent, sometimes the knob would shoot all the way down but move up as I swiped in that direction.  So still, I think this would get annoying after a while.  Definitely for sure, holding down the SHIFT key did help when trying to fine tune the adjustments but I found it getting cumbersome when trying to make quick adjustments. Overall, I just need to use a mouse if I don’t want to have any issues.

Also, I’m starting to think if its maybe the laptop I’m using; currently I’m using an Asus Taichi using  win 8.1 64.  I don’t recall ever having this issue when I was running a Dell with win7 32.  However back then I was only using Sonar Producer 8.5. and X1.  So to be honest, I first noticed this issue when I was using X3, but back then I wasn’t too concerned because I was using a mouse.

Anyways, thanks again for replying your advice was greatly appreciated…

I think you'll find that there is a great variation in the sensitivity of trackpads. I know it's a a pain for me when. I change between my studio DAW and my laptop. Same software but a world of difference in mouse use and trackpad use. I often forget to connect my wireless mouse on the laptop but that's what I'd suggest. That is, get yourself a wireless mouse. The USB wifi dongle is so tiny for that.
