Neato interactive frequency chart for EQing...
Many have probably already seen this but I thought it was cool so thought I'd post it... http://www.independentrecording.net/irn/resources/freqchart/main_display.htm It just shows the usual freq chart stuff for various instruments but if you hover over specific areas there are little dialog bubbles with more detailed info. Of course, as has been pointed out to me many times, this is not a replacement for using your ears but might be helpful as a general reference/starting point. I also cannot confirm the accuracy of it because I'm still learning but it looks properly done. Cheers.

I have a really old metal tune I wrote when I first installed Sonar (well 3 years old now I guess) that's pretty cool but I mangled the mix for obvious reasons (and if not obvious... it was incompetence). Been meaning to remix it so since it's rather simple and not really important to me in the grand scheme (but might be cool to have in my portfolio) I figure I can try out pure "by the numbers" removal of unnecessary frequencies to start with then polish it up from there. Just an experiment really before I start tackling some of my more important projects..

Yeah, and exactly what I need really I think. If I can start with all the unnecessary stuff gone then I may have better have a much better starting point. Then it's a matter of figuring out what I need to cut to let other things poke through without destroying the sound of what was masking siad "other thing". Obviously a lot of overlap in the traditional rock setup (which I am now realizing is why all my stuff sucks because it is soooo guitar thick) but maybe if I can plan things properly I can eek my rhtyhms in a little corner, leads in another and carve out little zones for things like the pick attack of the bass or beater of the kick to jab people in the eye... well it might work.
This is kind of making me think, based on some of the freq analyzers I've put on my stuff and just listening to it, that I may want to try some kind of automation as things come in and out of the foreground and/or run the fretboard (like when I go ultra high noodle down to lower register stuff). Probably overthinking it but I'll see what happens on that simple project then I can extrapolate from there.
Of course... baby steps but it's fun to think about and maybe I'll get good at this... finally. lulz

Great post, Another thing to note is that 80 db or so give the flattest frequency response on the ear sensitivity chart, I've read before that in or around 80 db is a good volume for mixing, depending on the size of your room it could be 78 to 83 db.

I'm glad folks are finding this handy. Ironic part is I haven't had a chance to use it myself yet but I've been doing a bunch of quick/on the fly mixes for something I've been working on and the very brief amount of time I spent studying this chart has actually helped me yank out unnecessary crap just from memory... leading to somewhat cleaner mixes... without even really trying.
Cool stuff. I may actually learn how to mix after all.... kind of... maybe... sorta... or sumthin'.
