Is this possible? Clone a C Drive?
Hi all I have a smallish problem with what I hope is an easy solution.
My C drive kept going off line a few weeks ago and I traced the problem to the fact the Sata cable was falling off at the drive. It seems the plastic tab was broken and it fell off when I touched the cable.
So I ordered a new drive as well as a Sata eternal power supply and adapter. I just got this today and it works fine. I managed to spin up the old drive and open it as an external USB drive.
Is it possible to totally clone the original drive over to the new drive?
Will drag and drop work or do you require special software?
The original drive was the same a 1 T 7200 RPM sata.
I had it partitioned into 100 Gig for C drive and the rest was just back up storage. I have 2 other drives in there that contain all my projects etc. So I only need what was on C to hopefully bring the computer back to it's original state.

Use Acronis True Image or Paragon to clone the existing HD.
A good investment... as it'll allow you to maintain an up-to-date backup image file.
Cheap insurance that you can always get back to a properly functioning DAW.

Thanks Jim, I have ordered it as I see it's only $50 Can. Amazon. In the mean time a tech friend has given me a link to EaseUS To Do Backup software which is freeware. Worth a try for now, it will either work or it won't http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/download.htm

I use Macrium Reflect now. Many more choices such as only clone parts of the disk that are used which speeds things up. Also able to clone without dropping into dos mode somehow.

Just an update, the EaseUS To Do backup software works most excellent. I cloned successfully as well as it is now working perfectly to back up my C drive every day at 4PM.

Jim, I got a free version of Acronis with my Western Digital 1 TB external drive. Do you happen to know if it's up to par with the paid version? I'm not against purchasing something other than redundancy, of course.

The free version is designed specifically to clone a drive. It lacks the file backup capabilities and other features of the paid version. If a clone or disk image is all you need it will be fine. My recollection is that it checks the drive and only works on the vendors drives however. http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119

I used to use Acronis True Image but I was left hanging two times. Acronis didn't get a third chance and I've moved to Macrium Reflect, paid version. I like it better as backups are faster. I've done restores (to confirm it works). I like the WinPE bootable recovery media over the Linux version (I've had problem with Acronis' Linux recovery media). Macrium automates the creation of the WinPE recovery bootable media, Acronis requires manual procedures to create the WinPE media (bootable disc).

I'm revisiting this old(ish) thread to ask a question on cloned drives. I'm considering backing up before it's too late (almost certainly I have now sealed my own fate and the next time I try to boot up, it won't). Nevertheless, let's try: Has anyone done this with the new Command Centre, and successfully moved everything over to a new disk, and if so, how does it affect serial numbers, etc. Are all the applications and plugs (D-Pro, AD2, etc) happy to be moved like this? Also - what are good cloning programmes. I don't mind paying, and no doubt very expensive ones are good, but let's be reasonable about this. All the ones mentioned above - do they still stand? How about Win10 - does that throw any spanners in any works? Thanks guys for any helpful input ... Jerry

I've used Clonezilla in the past and will likely use that again when I go to clone my drive over to the new SSD. It's not as user friendly as something like Acronis but it's free and does the job very well.

I had some intermittent issues with a C drive a few years back. I bought a new drive to replace it, and it came with cloning software. I figured, what the heck, it's worth a try. In the past before that I had spent hours if not days rebuilding a new drive with the old programs and data.
I followed the instructions exactly, step by step and in 15 minutes it told me it was finished. Swapped the drives around so the new drive was the c and rebooted. To my utter amazement, it came up quickly, and everything was there. I only had to install one application from it's original disks. It was a MAXTOR drive IIRC.

Maxtor was acquired by Seagate, so a disk cloner may be on their website for new installs.
Another freebie with a simple interface is Macrium Reflect.

The Seagate site has their Disk Wizard which seems to be a custom version of Acronis, and well respected. One point - I currently have a disk image created by the in-built Windows disk imaging software (I'm using Win8.1): Does anyone have any confidence in this?
