Looking for a really good grand piano instrument or sound bank?

I'm somewhat disappointed with the Piano's that come with Platinum and Rapture Pro and Z3TA+2 ... looking for a large Grand sound.  Any suggestions?

Cheers, Rob.

I think you will get a better answer here rather than the Cakewalk Instruments area. Do you have a budget?

Ah ok, thank you.  My budget is cost less than what I can buy a used good condition grand piano for :)

I really like Soniccouture's Hammersmith Grand. These guys make excellent sampled instruments.

I am assuming you don't own the full version of Kontakt which would exclude some I would suggest. The new Native Instruments Pianos are very good and will run without needing a full Kontakt licence.

You get two quite different grands and an upright. They can also be bought individualy, but the bundle is a better deal.

Thanks for the input ... I was actually looking at Komplete 10 Ultimate crossgrade, but not sure what qualifies for crossgrade?  Assuming it will integrate with 64bit Sonar?

I like the grand pianos in EZ Keys and Addictive Keys.  And you don't need Kontakt for either.

Same goes for Pianoteq, with their highly tweakable D4 (Steinway), K2 and Bluthner. No samples, but 40 MB (yes!) of physical modeling. Pianoteq 5 Standard is on sale at 30% off. If you prefer samples, have a look at Sampletekk's grand pianos (as they're half price now during their annual summer sale). Many of them are for Kontakt, EXS24 and HALion. As for Kontakt, also look into ProductionVoices, they have some fine grands, regularly on sale. The new Pearl grand is 20% off at ImpactSoundworks and SonicCouture's Hammersmith is 30% off at BestService. There are many other choices, I just gave you those on sale.

Edit: if you prefer to spend less, Pianoteq's Stage version is on sale at DontCrack, the Standard version at Modartt.

Once you have Kontakt, there are a virtually (see what I did there?) unlimited number of sampled piano libraries available. Many are very good, many are quite good, and there is also a lot of junk. You'll have to listen carefully to demos to find the right tones for your style. I highly recommend Sampletek's libraries as a good starting point. They sound great and are somewhat more affordable than the giant libraries.

If you don't want to go the Kontakt route, I also highly recommend Ivory II. Great pianos.

Wow, lots of great feedback, thank you!

I'll get busy looking and hopefully listening to some of these choices.

On the KOMPLETE 10 vs. KOMPLETE 10 Ultimate ... are the good samples/instruments living in "Ultimate" or can I found something nice in the standard verison of KOMPLETE 10?

    Cheers, Rob.

Piano wise Ultimate will add Alicia's Keys to the "Definative Piano Collection" and "The Giant" found in Komplete. I only have Komplete so I can't comment on Alicia's keys but if pianos are your main focus I would say Komplete has it reasonably well covered. Komplete also includes the Scarbee Electric Pianos too.
Of course there is a aweful lot of other stuff in Ultimate but it does not add too much in the piano department.

The new NI Grandeur  is pretty nice and might be what you're looking for.  Although I still think the Hammersmith is the better sounding instrument.

Actually, all the new NI pianos and The Giant are from these guys: http://www.galaxy-instruments.com/index.html

I'm not a big fan of the NI pianos. I do like Addictive Keys and Pianoteq. I also have EWQL Pianos which are good, but I've been using Piaboteq more and more.

I agree with that regarding their older pianos. They always sounded a bit "thin" to me. Always took a fair amount of work to get them to sound good.

Listened to some of the suggestions:

    1.  The Grand - tad noisey
    2.  Pianoteq - thin
    3.  Addictive Keys - flat and too bright in some spots
    4.  The Hammersmith - spot on

Now I'm over 50 so my ears are certainly not "golden" ... just my opinion of the sounds.  Probably going to go with the Hammersmith.

Thanks again for all the input.

    Cheers, Rob.

I have Pianoteq and it is very good. However, if you have Kontakt, try out OrangeTree Samples Evolution Rosewood Grand. It is phenomenal, and it has taken over as my go-to piano. It is a sampled Yamaha C7, and even though I had dismissed Yamaha and preferred Steinway for years, this one changed my mind.

    +1 on OTS ERG.
As for Komplete 10 versus Ultimate: K10U is absolutely huge but piano-wise you're not losing out when only Alicia's Keys is missing.

With the likes of Addictive Keys and even TruePianos (Amber included in Sonar Platinum ... or discounted upgrade to 5 pianos) ... tone / mic placement can be altered.

I have komplete ultimate 10. IMHO alicia keys is still the best from NI. Addictive keys is sweet but it does not have enough velocity layers. I still like ivory ii because it is dynamic and with some external eq and reverb it will shine.

True piano can be purchase at 20% off if you have splat. You will get 5 more pianos module where all of them sound better than the amber module in splat.

My favorite of all is pianoteg 5. It is the most expressive and dynamic of all.

I do feel that a piano vst will definately need a good reverb such as 2caudio's Aether.

Pianoteq 5. AD2.Aether Reverb, Dune2 , Reason 10 and Komplete 10 Ultimate, Syntronik, O8N2 adv, Studio one 3.5 Pro.

I like the TruePianos.  I got the whole set and that was my go-to piano for a while.  Seriously, if you haven't checked out Hammersmith you owe it to yourself to at least have a listen.  It also has the best velocity mapper around.

I should have qualified my statement about NI pianos. I'm not familiar with the latest ones. I might like them better.

Thanks for bringing them up.  I haven't checked OrangeTree out before.  I will be doing so soon.

@Dranck, I am sure you would. The old pianos are no longer included in Komplete.
