Sunny - Thanks!  I'll take crazy and dynamic.

Sir Bapu - The guitars are a bit low-mid friendly, but since I'll be going back in for a few minor tweaks anyway I think I'll give it a shot.  Thanks for the comments - it definitely is intended to have the energy, though my "movements" were handled independently.

Tom - Thanks!   Blazin' and ELP in the same breath.

Brilliant combination of the digital instruments with the guitar.  Prog rock lives!  Great job, Steve.

Thanks, Phil!   I love digital technology and everything in DAW land, but my background is old-skool prog.  So I'm glad to hear both are accounted for.

really enjoyed this, great main riff. i'm with Bapsi, would like a little more presence on the guitars. also the kicks need more punch though i liked the toms sound. pretty cool and unique sounding, the sort of thing Ron Jarzombek would do

Thanks, Mark!   I had to look up Ron Jarzombek...  I see he's into chromatic variations using various systems, so I do get the connection.    All I need now is half his technique.

In regards to the mix...   I've just uploaded a third (and probably final) mix, this time with more subtle changes courtesy of previous responses as well as yours - just a bite more hi-mid edge on the guitars, additional "thud" on the kick from a shifted EQ peak, and some grit on the bass for more edge and growl (ironically I am using Craig's Growl FX Chain).

Superb mind-expanding prog metal without the "gwaaaar"  !!!
I tend to agree with Bapu about the guitar eq. They could be allowed to be a bit more present. They are just to good !
But I assume you have a reason to have them in the mix that way. The overall mix sounds great and the performance and arrangement are fantastic !

Best regards,
Daniel

Re: New instrumental tune - Chromatakish 2015/07/28 16:05:09 (permalink)
Thanks, Daniel.  Gwar aside, playing the parts did expand my mind a bit.     FWIW, I added a bit of hi-mid edge in the last mix, but found that more edge/grit tended to blur things a bit so I chose to cap it for that reason.  Plus I wanted to leave space for the synth parts sitting down the middle.  But I definitely will hold these comments in mind for future use when choosing how to arrange things.

Thanks, James.   It did take some effort to maintain some semblance of timing while still playing the parts "well", but regardless it was a fun tune to do!

This could be the soundtrack for the only "bad acid trip" I ever had.  Don't worry, it was over 40 years ago.  I don't mean this badly, but it really took me back.  Some high powered playing, Steve.  At first I thought it just wasn't powerful enough but realized I had my volume way down.  Cranked it up and remembered diving to the sidewalk in Elmhurst because I was sure the elm trees were attacking me!    Aaaaah, stupid times!  So, Steve, when music evokes emotions, you've done your job. I would suggest everyone to crank it up and get some of their old memories b-ack.  LOL!

OK.... now that made me laugh.   Out loud.

Thanks, Warren.  From now on I shall imagine elm trees on the hunt!  It's not necessarily an expected reaction/emotion, but hey, I like it.
