How to use V700 win 8 driver in win 10 (also applies to some other Roland drivers)

Has anyone been brave enough to attempt this with W10 technical previews yet?

EDIT: well, what a great thread. All the hard work done by MackTheKnight and dustriplin. Eventual solution copied below. Follow these steps to the letter, and all will be well.

dustriplin
IT WORKED!!! I have the 700 running right now in Windows 10.  Still testing it for stability and have a few things I have yet to install... but so far so good.

Process I used (Many thanks to MACK for getting this far )  Will be a bit loquacious here, because I'm still not exactly where in this process I went wrong in my first attempt.  I took the liberty to go back up and copy much of Mack's helpful suggestions so we have everything in one place now.

My current system is an INTEL(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU  [link=mailto:920@2.67]920@2.67[/link]GHz with 9.00 GB (64-bit Operating System, X64-based processor) running Windows 8.1.  I'm running a fully updated version of Sonar Platinum Producer.

While still in Windows 8 I did the following steps (1-4):
1.  I uninstalled my 700 drivers and made sure my 700 was turned off (but didn't unhook it)
2.  I transferred my copy of the 700 V2.02 to the desktop.
3.  in the  \vs700_w81d_v202\vs700_w81d_v202\Files\64bit\Files\ folder I found the  RDIF1089.inf file and opened it in Notepad.
4.  I cut and copied the following (from Mack's work above) into the [Manufacturer] section:
;---------------------------------------------------------------;
[Manufacturer]
%MfgName%=Roland,NTamd64.6.2,NTamd64.10
;[ControlFlags]
;ExcludeFromSelect=*
[Roland]
;; Windows7 - Windows XP 64
;; not supported
[Roland.NTamd64.10]
;; Windows8
%RDID0089DeviceDesc%=RDID0089Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_00FD ; VS-700
%RDID0090DeviceDesc%=RDID0090Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_00FE ; VS-700 M1
%RDID0091DeviceDesc%=RDID0091Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_00FF ; VS-700 M2
%RDID0089DeviceDesc2%=RDID0089Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_0100 ; VS-700
%RDID0091DeviceDesc2%=RDID0091Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_0101 ; VS-700 M2
[Roland.NTamd64.6.2]
;; not supported
;---------------------------------------------------------------;
5. Installed Windows 10 (At the end I had a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 card that did not load up so my video looked wonky.  Also the second monitor isn't working because of this... but I'm ignoring this for now)
6. Went into the Device Manager (right click the Microsoft logo on the bottom left and open the Device Manager) and disabled everything that was in the sound, video, and game controllers folder (I have an onboard audio, MOTU 2408 PCI card, and NVIDIA options here that you might not have)
7. Turned off the driver-signing signatures:  I'll outline the procedure here for Windows 10.
-Find the power options on the Start Menu (the microsoft symbol in the bottom left).
-Hold down the SHIFT key while you click Restart.
-Once your computer has rebooted you will be able to choose the Troubleshoot option.
-Head into Advanced options.
-Head into Startup Settings.
-You will select the restart option.
-After it restarts again, you will be given a list of startup settings. The one we are looking for is “Disable driver signature enforcement”. To choose the setting, you will need to press the F7 key.
-Your PC will then reboot and you will be able to install unsigned drivers without any error message.
8.  Run the setup.exe from the VS700_w82d_v202 directory \vs700_w81d_v202\vs700_w81d_v202\Files\64bit\ folder and install as you would normally.  When prompted plug in/turn on your 700 interface. (Note, if you've already installed the driver before, the install tool may prompt you to uninstall and reboot - if this happens, you'll have to turn-off driver signing and reboot again!) (I did try this and it does work to uninstall and reinstall...)
Once detected, you should get a warning about installing unsigned drivers.  Just accept the risk and let the driver install.

If all goes well, after a few minutes, drivers will install and the installer program will run to completion...

I went and started my Sonar Platinum program and everything worked perfectly except for Addictive Drums which now didn't recognize my computer!  Reran the XLN Online Installer and added the computer to the profile and after some waiting had it running again in SONAR.

I now will install the NVIDIA graphics drivers and see about getting my monitors back and start using this puppy again... let you know if I run into anything else that's crazy...

Best
Dur

I have the technical preview installed in an old DAW but never tried to connect my VS700 because, as far as I know, Roland codes it's drivers for only official Windows OS.  There's is a hack you can do but I've never bothered to try it.

I'm sure Roland will be updating the drivers. We likely won't see them for a week or so after the Windows 10 release. I'm more concerned with how Sonar will play in Win10. I'd assume fine since there won't be any major code changes to the OS.

I use the VS100 on this computer and the 700 on the studio computer. Not worried about it at all. They have been good about getting the updated drivers. Just don't freak out if they aren't there day 1.

I contacted Roland a few weeks ago and they were just waiting on the driver to be sent to them from Roland Japan. The request was already in for it. :)

Ah, marvellous.

What I am curious about though, is if anyone's already got it working. Noel mentioned in another thread that there were reasonably good odds it would just work if you did an upgrade to Windows 10 rather than a clean install, as the only real barrier to it working is the driver's installer, not the driver itself. Of course, I want somebody else to take that gamble first :)

Installed Windows 10 this morning... The 700 drivers didn't work out so well!  Uninstalled the drivers, reinstalled... still hasn't connected right... it's stalled at the ... the driver will install automatically" window.  The device driver has the exclamation points and the VS-700 is showing up under "Other devices".
I have all other sound devices disabled ....

So from my perspective... be careful my friends!!

There's a tricky workaround that some people used to get the v700 working in Windows 8, before the driver update, that might work the same for Windows 10. It's a bit techy, so only for the brave: http://www.alphr.com/blog...s-to-work-in-windows-8

John T - Thanks for the link.  I was able to use the Win 8.1 driver with the help of that article.  You do have to disable driver signatures, which is pretty easy to find in windows 10.   I modified the VS100 V202 drivers with notepad and disabled driver signatures.  The driver installed and my VS100 is working again.

You need the find the [Manufacturer] line in the RDIF1099.inf file and modify it as follows
;---------------------------------------------------------------;
[Manufacturer]
%MfgName%=Roland,NTamd64.6.2,NTamd64.10
;[ControlFlags]
;ExcludeFromSelect=*
[Roland]
;; Windows7 - Windows XP 64
;; not supported
[Roland.NTamd64.10]
;; Windows8
%RDID0099DeviceDesc%=RDID0099Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_00EB ; VS-100
[Roland.NTamd64.6.2]
;; not supported
;===============================================================;

Note the bold text, which are the only lines I changed.

Time will tell as to how stable it is, but it's a work-around for the time-being.  I don't think I'd recommend anyone running a pro studio to depend on this as a reliable fix...

Cheers,
Mack

Folks... it is easy to roll back to Windows 8.1 if you find yourself in the same boat as I was with the 700 drivers ()  I'm now back to where I was... waiting for Roland to bring us new drivers!

Ah, so that works.

I'll admit to being a cowardly soldier, huddling at the back of the line here, but if that method works, I think I'll do the upgrade. Just too busy with work right now to chance it not working. So thanks to you for going first

I've messed around with it over the pre-release period on other people's computers, and I like it a lot. As long as I can get all my audio stuff working ok, I definitely want to upgrade. I think it's a really impressive update, in design and usability terms.

I'm digging it.  Love the window snap features and the multiple desktops.  (Yes I know it's been standard in Linux & MAC OS for years)

So far all seems stable with Sonar X2 & my trusty VS-100.  The only thing I haven't been able to get working is the control surface link on the VS100.  That may be a deal-breaker for the 700 owners...

Yeah, it's not news that Microsoft usually follow rather than lead in terms of UI design. Myself, I don't care about that. Linux is very clever and all that, but trying to run a recording studio on Linux is an exercise in face-spiting nose-removal that I've no interest in.

LOL, I agree.  Been there, tried that - I've no patience for that anymore.  Sonar is solid and I'm quite happy with it, so I'm happy to get a new OS that is turning out to be one of Microsoft's better releases.

I got the control surface working too, so I'm all good now.  So fear not, if you've a VS-700.   I forgot to define it as the VS-100 instead of just a generic ACT controller...  (oops)

VS-700r  here (no control surface) will not work with this W8 driver..I'm not sure I want to mess with the hack. Just need the drivers. Roland has the system set as discontinued so..i hope they fix this.

Hi Dogfall,

Did you try hacking the .ini file from the 8.1 drivers, and disabling signature checking in win 10?  It is fairly simple and I've seen no stability issues on my rig, all evening...

John T and MacktheKnife... thanks for the correspondence on this.  I really like Windows 10.... I'll give the hack a try!

dogfall:  for the 700 we will be needing the rdif1089.inf file ... if you are installing the drivers this file will be in your installation drivers folder..  example \01_vs_700_drivers\vs700_w81d_v202\Files\64bit\Files
If your drivers are already loaded you find them in your windows system folder .... example C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\rdif1089.inf_amd64_f12cd33e4ba5ff80

From what I can gather... the way you disable driver signatures is described in this page (used for Windows 8.1 or 10 I believe):

Okay... I guess I have everything to make myself dangerous... here we go..
