I wouldn't recommend disabling driver signatures ... other than overclocking one's CPU as #1 source for BSOD, drivers are the #2 source of BSOD.

It would be wise to wait for official support for Windows 10 from the manufacturer.

Just curious, what's in Windows 10 that is a must have now?  Professionally, I develop software for Windows 10, 8, 7 so I use the various flavors for testing, but from a programmers perspective I can't say I see anything in Windows 10 that would make my software any better (for end users or myself).  On the performance front there are marginal improvements that may show up as a slight bump in performance testing software, but in real world usage they wouldn't make any difference for other applications (like Sonar, games - except DX12 games, Video - Adobe suite, animation - Cinema4D, etc.).

Other than Windows 10 being "different" what's actually there that folks MUST have now ... or is it just because it is different?

Anyway, I definitely do NOT encourage disabling of driver signatures as that's a common place for hackers to exploit because driver signatures provide considerable system wide access to any and all resources.

Cheers, Rob.

Hi Rob,

You will notice that I did caution folks in doing this, especially if they're using a DAW to make a living.
I think you'll find various reasons for wanting to move to windows 10.  Some of us just like to stay on the bleeding edge, consequences be damned...

In my case, I'm an IT Analyst supporting over 900 systems.  I consider it a personal mission to keep my skills current.  When a new OS releases, I jump on it as soon as a beta is available.  I've been testing Win 10 on a surface tablet, since the first beta became available.  I didn't move my main workstation over until last night, as I wasn't sure if I could get the VS100 working, but based on my experience with the beta I decided to take the risk and work through any problems that may come up.  Modifying the ini file and temporarily disabling driver signing is pretty low risk, imho - as long as you know what you're getting yourself into and are comfortable with the possibility of screwing something up if you don't know what you're doing.

That said - I'll say again - I wouldn't recommend anybody do this, if they depend on their DAW to make a living or can't live with any potential down-time.  Myself - I just do music on the side, as one of a few different hobbies, so the risk for me was minimal.  I just wanted to share my experience with others, that may want to do the same.

As for Windows 10, it has a lot of new features that I think will be appealing to many.  It is after-all the last full OS Microsoft will likely ever release as it seems they are moving more the direction of android and mac os, with frequent incremental updates.  Also, if you're into gaming and want to stay on the bleeding edge, there is DX12 support in Win10, but no other OS.  Even if nothing supports it yet, some of us like to get an early jump on things.

I think those of us that are early adopters, are aware of the risks.

-Mack

That sounds like you didn't disable the file signature checking...

Follow the link John T posted, as the steps in Win 8 are quite similar to Win 10.

Click the start button and search for "Advanced Startup Options"

In the box that pops up under "Advanced startup" click "restart now"

You'll get another prompt before reboot.  Read the options carefully.  One of them is related to signature checking.  On the reboot you'll get a prompt of 1 - 9 options I believe.  Again read them carefully.  I believe it's option 7 to temporarily disable signature checking.

Once you boot up, install the drivers per normal then plug in your interface when prompted.

.... tried the hack folks ... just couldn't get the 700 drivers to work, though I'm sure I didn't run through all the permutations I needed to to ferret out the gremlins (I did try quite a few after awhile)... enough fun for me for one day ...got to get some stuff recorded so back to Windows 8 for awhile ... Windows 10 really is a nice OS for the other things I do... hope Roland get's their installer fixed.
Just a few things I tried..
I have the full 700 studio so I worked with the 1089.inf ...
I first tried working with the drivers that were already installed... Windows doesn't like you doing that....
I then hacked the drivers in the installation folder and reinstalled the drivers... the hack to the .inf showed up nice in the system folder, but the 700 still couldn't find the drivers..
Was always careful to disable the signature checking... MacktheKnife's description is perfect for doing this..

Maybe just working with drivers for the 700C or 700R separately would help simplify the  debugging process ... eager to see how it goes with davidmusic53 on this..

Will monitor .... at this point, I'm probably going to need a very specific step-by-step procedure to follow

Good try, Dustriplin.

I don't have a VS-700 myself, so I'm sorry I can't help with specifics related to that unit.  Hopefully someone else can figure it out, or Roland is prompt with official drivers.  (fingers crossed)

I will definitely wait until there is an official driver ...

Anyway, it will be a while until Roland releases new official drivers. So far there are only win10 drivers for the Quad-Capture, but none for Octa-Capture or Integra, which are both still supported products ...

BTW - once/if official VS-700 drivers become available, please start a new thread so that reported experiences with hacked and official drivers are not intermingled !

Well, I have some depressing news for you, which is that the v700 isn't even mentioned on the Roland Windows 10 driver page. And they do actually mention some devices that they're not doing updated drivers for. V700 hasn't even made the "we apologise" list. I think we might be out on our own on this one.

Wow that's a horrible disappointment.  I really hope we can get the V700 working with the ini modification, then...

If anybody is brave enough, try editing the RDIF1089.inf file that comes with V 2.02 of the V700 drivers.  Find the [Manufacturer] section and change what's in bold here to match:
;---------------------------------------------------------------;

[Roland.NTamd64.6.2]

Be sure to disable driver signing as previously discussed, or this won't work...

I'd try myself, but I don't have the good fortune of owning a VS - 700.

I'm definitely going to give that a go, and I expect it will work, but I've just not got the time free for a few weeks. As I understand it, the actual driver model for W10 is exactly the same as in W8, so there's bound to be a way. But I just can't chance it til I get a day or two downtime.

Understandable, John - I wouldn't want to take the risk either, if I were in that situation.  I too, am optimistic that this will do the trick.

I do look forward to hearing how it goes, when you get some downtime.

Hi CJ,
We sent a request for updated drivers to our corporate Roland/ BOSS headquarters in Japan. At this time, they have not informed us regarding an updated driver. We hope to have this information soon after Windows 10 has its official Public Release and not just the Preview Release .
Sorry about that.
Kind regards,

MacktheKnight - might give this another go along with John T...
Question about specific path on the how to hack this thing:
Are you hacking the .inf that you find in the windows system32 folder after the windows 10 installation or replacing the .inf in the system32 folder with a hacked version or are you uninstalling the old driver and running the installation with the modified .inf?

Hi Dustriplin - no, you have to hack the inf after updating to win 10...

and no, not hacking the existing inf file in system32.

Download the latest 8.1 driver for your V700.   V 2.02 I believe.

Unzip the file and where you've extracted look in: \vs700_w81d_v202\vs700_w81d_v202\Files\64bit\Files\

In there you will find RDIF1089.inf.  This is the file you want to edit.

Once edited & saved, turn-off driver signing, as previously explained.  After you've booted up with driver signing off, make sure your interface is disconnected from the USB connection, or powered off.  Then run setup.exe from the VS700_w82d_v202 directory and install as you would normally.  When prompted plug in/turn on your interface. (Note, if you've already installed the driver before, the install tool may prompt you to uninstall and reboot - if this happens, you'll have to turn-off driver signing and reboot again!)

Once detected, you should get a warning about installing unsigned drivers.  Just accept the risk and let the driver install.

Hope this helps,
Mack

Thanks Mack...confirms what I tried last time ... once I did the procedure you outlined here, the installer got stuck after I plugged in the interface and turned it on... Some things to still try is making sure the USB bank that I use in the motherboard is clean except for the 700 (something that I remembered could trip up the install in the past), making sure that all the other audio interfaces (on board and such) are off as well as any other programs that might be running (antivirus and things), also might pull other USB devices out and install the 700 first,...

IT WORKED!!! I have the 700 running right now in Windows 10.  Still testing it for stability and have a few things I have yet to install... but so far so good.

Process I used (Many thanks to MACK for getting this far )  Will be a bit loquacious here, because I'm still not exactly where in this process I went wrong in my first attempt.  I took the liberty to go back up and copy much of Mack's helpful suggestions so we have everything in one place now.

My current system is an INTEL(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU  [link=mailto:920@2.67]920@2.67[/link]GHz with 9.00 GB (64-bit Operating System, X64-based processor) running Windows 8.1.  I'm running a fully updated version of Sonar Platinum Producer.

While still in Windows 8 I did the following steps (1-4):
1.  I uninstalled my 700 drivers and made sure my 700 was turned off (but didn't unhook it)
2.  I transferred my copy of the 700 V2.02 to the desktop.
3.  in the  \vs700_w81d_v202\vs700_w81d_v202\Files\64bit\Files\ folder I found the  RDIF1089.inf file and opened it in Notepad.
4.  I cut and copied the following (from Mack's work above) into the [Machine] section:
;---------------------------------------------------------------;
[Manufacturer]
%MfgName%=Roland,NTamd64.6.2,NTamd64.10
;[ControlFlags]
;ExcludeFromSelect=*
[Roland]
;; Windows7 - Windows XP 64
;; not supported
[Roland.NTamd64.10]
;; Windows8
%RDID0089DeviceDesc%=RDID0089Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_00FD ; VS-700
%RDID0090DeviceDesc%=RDID0090Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_00FE ; VS-700 M1
%RDID0091DeviceDesc%=RDID0091Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_00FF ; VS-700 M2
%RDID0089DeviceDesc2%=RDID0089Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_0100 ; VS-700
%RDID0091DeviceDesc2%=RDID0091Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_0101 ; VS-700 M2
[Roland.NTamd64.6.2]
;; not supported
;---------------------------------------------------------------;
5. Installed Windows 10 (At the end I had a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 card that did not load up so my video looked wonky.  Also the second monitor isn't working because of this... but I'm ignoring this for now)
6. Went into the Device Manager (right click the Microsoft logo on the bottom left and open the Device Manager) and disabled everything that was in the sound, video, and game controllers folder (I have an onboard audio, MOTU 2408 PCI card, and NVIDIA options here that you might not have)
7. Turned off the driver-signing signatures:  I'll outline the procedure here for Windows 10.
-Find the power options on the Start Menu (the microsoft symbol in the bottom left).
-Hold down the SHIFT key while you click Restart.
-Once your computer has rebooted you will be able to choose the Troubleshoot option.
-Head into Advanced options.
-Head into Startup Settings.
-You will select the restart option.
-After it restarts again, you will be given a list of startup settings. The one we are looking for is “Disable driver signature enforcement”. To choose the setting, you will need to press the F7 key.
-Your PC will then reboot and you will be able to install unsigned drivers without any error message.
8.  Run the setup.exe from the VS700_w82d_v202 directory \vs700_w81d_v202\vs700_w81d_v202\Files\64bit\ folder and install as you would normally.  When prompted plug in/turn on your 700 interface. (Note, if you've already installed the driver before, the install tool may prompt you to uninstall and reboot - if this happens, you'll have to turn-off driver signing and reboot again!) (I did try this and it does work to uninstall and reinstall...)
Once detected, you should get a warning about installing unsigned drivers.  Just accept the risk and let the driver install.

If all goes well, after a few minutes, drivers will install and the installer program will run to completion...

I went and started my Sonar Platinum program and everything worked perfectly except for Addictive Drums which now didn't recognize my computer!  Reran the XLN Online Installer and added the computer to the profile and after some waiting had it running again in SONAR.

I now will install the NVIDIA graphics drivers and see about getting my monitors back and start using this puppy again... let you know if I run into anything else that's crazy...

Best
Dur

Keep us posted on stability & performance.  I think MY VS-100 is actually performing better in 10, than 8.1.  I seem to be able to run the latency lower without any distortion creeping in....

It does feel pretty snappy... I finally was able to force my first audio drop at the lowest latency setting (1ms - ASIO) .... a 35 track tune with every heavy WAVES Signature Series plug-ins on about half the tracks , Bus Compression ARC and Ozone mastering  and a spectrum analyzer on the master fader... and me moving a bunch of faders and plug-in dials ... and no Windows optimizations ..  so far so good for what I will need.... pretty pleased right now with my rig and Windows 10.
Again, thanks John T and Mack for working this forum for us.

Well, this has finally prompted me to accept the "reserve Windows 10" thingy, so I assume it'll take a day or so to arrive.

Incidentally, I've been meaning to ask: what modifications did Black Lion do to your V700?

John,
I actually purchased Dyonight's full VS700 rig.  He used to be on the 700 forums a lot.  Really great guy, and gave me tons of helpful information on getting everything set up.  Really shortened the learning curve.  I think his Cakewalk thread about the mod was titled "BLA and the VS700-R" From what he said BLA took 10 months to fix to mod it and all he discover that they fixed were the op-amps in the outputs I think.  The Black Lion mod on the MOTU 2408 mk3 (which I use with the ART and Behringer units for big live recording jobs and when I get tired of the sound of the dang 700r fan!) was extensive and really made that unit shine.  The Black Lion Micro Clock that I used to sync everything is very nice as well.

If you want to force the download of Win 10, you can do so from here, and not have to wait on the reservation:

Thanks. I'm kind of busy though, so I think I'll wait. Makes more sense for me to do it some time later next week. Also still being cautious and seeing if any horror stories emerge.

It does seem to be going pretty well, this roll out, though.
