Edge of Worlds (Updated with video link)

My first musical influence when I was starting of writing music (many years ago!) was the legendary Jean Michel Jarre. After getting fired up listening to some extracts from his current album project I decided to revisit my earliest musical passion and create this pure synth indulgence - for myself... ;)

Hope some of you might like it too!

See it here set to some breath taking NASA time lapse footage:

Not a lot to say except for good job and well done in blending the kick drum, you know its there but doesn't overpower the track. Great stuff.

Isn't that what they call "four on the floor" ? Or is it "four to the floor"? Anyway I got up several times and tried to answer my front door. Then I calmed down.

This is a very well done and well mixed synth piece, lots of nice touches and ear candy. Definitely a journey. Really cool.

Thanks for the nice comments guys!

Really pleased with the final mixon this as some of my initial test mixes sounded a little 'opaque' - had a sonic equivalent of looking at the mix through frosted glass. But I think this final mix really brings out all the details of the tracks.

    Cheers!

Great tune, Chris!  Hope to hear more like this from you.  This is a good arrangement that holds one's interest, and would be great background music for a film or video.  Encore.

It's beautiful stuff isn't it Andy. There is plenty of it about and as the original images from NASA are copyright free, and people have assembled it into great looking videos.

    Get searching! ;)

Sure is Chris... I was watching another one posted here recently, also using NASA material.. Beats using my GoPro to take time lapse video of the sky, which is what I did for my M81 video... Took me bloomin ages too!

Your work is always top notch.  I was still getting distracted because I am not a big fan of electronica (in some cases) because the tracks always seem long and no frame of reference.  The music is beautiful but......when you put it to the NASA video I loved it!!  Watched/listened to the whole tune and never lost focus.  I would make sure you put that video link up in the original post, it sends it over the top.  Excellent work, Chris!!

This certainly has all the hallmarks of JMJ and Vangelis, nicely written and arranged, the mix translates well here.

    What synths did you use?

Thanks Warren - It's a real compliment to hear that I was able to capture your attention when the electronic genre is not usually your bag! Thanks for giving it the time and so glad you enjoyed it. I think it really comes to life set to the NASA video too, the footage is just perfect for the sound. As suggested I have added this to the original post.

Wookiee - Again, thanks for listening and glad you liked it. As for synths, I used the following:

    Rapture Pro - 3 instances
    Z3TA+2 - 4 instances
Camel audio Alchemy - 2 instances
    Dimension pro - 1 instance
    Session drummer 3 - 1 instance

Plus a handful of samples from my ever growing "boom and sweeps" folder and a few additional drum samples.

Happy to go into more detail if you are interested.

Thanks Chris I was just interested to see what you were using, have ever considered any the Arturia synths, (no I do not work for them)

Really enjoyed this, Chris.  I did the YouTube version with the NASA footage, and the music seemed to fit so perfectly.  Did you compose the piece with that footage in mind?

Re: Edge of Worlds 2015/08/04 17:45:17 (permalink)
    Thanks Phil,

No, I composed the piece simply as music. After it was complete I was pondering on what visuals might fit it. By this time I had the 'spacey' title and this prompted me to explore possible sources of space footage as I thought they might suit.

After searching on Vimeo I discovered the video created by Brad Bell as listed in the description and knew it would be just perfect. Brad and done a lot of hard work but had very kindly released his video for others to use under a CC license. I reordered his shots in my video editor and timed the cuts to match the music. The running length of his video wasn't enough to back my whole track so I followed links he had provided and found some more footage directly from NASA which I cut into my edit.

Ideally it would have been nice to have had a little more footage to use as I had to repeat some shots and use a few playback speed tricks to get it all vibeing well, but I am very pleased with the result as the footage is simply stunning and a great fit for my track.

Thanks for listening, umm I mean watching!!

    Cheers!

Great combination/layering of synth tones.   The mix is nice and wide and suits the tune well.    The main synth lead around the 3:20 mark has that Vangelis-ish feel that sits nicely.
