I'm not sure how that all works.  They give you tracks, obviously.  Anyway, the mix sounds good to me except the overall volume seems very hot.  It could be me.  It's a beautiful song.

Sounds good, John, though the vox sounds like it could benefit from a bit more body... seems a bit  thin now.

Hi Warren the link to Boz provides you with links for the stems.  I am surprised that you say it sounds hot, was that playing back the soundcloud MP3 or did you download the wave?  I did not squish this at all the average is all around the -6dB mark.

Yes, John, I listened on soundclick.  I have an internal Realtek something in this laptop.  It's a powerful laptop but I don't use the card.  I have my Steinberg interface that I use for mobile.  I'll hook it up and check it again.  I know that our stuff doesn't sound as good through the internal card.  I just got lazy on the road.  Bad Warren!   I'll let you know how that sounds.  I'll bet it sounds good. The mix sounded nice.  Later, buddy!

Cool tune, I'll have to download the wav and listen through ARC but the vocals don't seem loud enough and the bass too loud possibly. Much better than I could achieve.

Thanks Grant, you may well be right re bass and Vox, Vox is not high on my mixing knowledge scale.

There are 36 tracks in total from the four zip files so you know.

36 tracks, oh my that's a lot of tracks. I would be overwhelmed to be sure with that one. You're getting there, the guitars and other instruments are sure getting that Wookiee sparkle that delights the ears. I'm sure your final will be a serious contender.

Okay, Wook, hooked up Steinberg, Sennheiser phones and downloaded .wav.  Man, it's beautiful.  I thought I had left the peripherals in the car which is valet parked in the mountains here.  But, I did bring them in.  Now I feel bad about the others I commented on.  It's like I didn't give them a fair shot, though I know some people critique on laptop speakers so...... I love this song, too.  It's really nice, John!!!!

Interesting idea. The stems sound well recorded, so I'd think the mixing would be a little easier? A lot easier? My main fight on my own mixes is trying to accentuate the good and polish the heck out of the turds.

On your mix here, some said too much bass? I'd want more. I'd try to thicken that acoustic guitar a little maybe, or add some lower range eq back to it. But that is certainly just personal mix preference, not necessarily better,  and yours and everyone else's will be different of course.

But I think your mix works very well in all other elements! As far as the song goes, I find your original stuff much more interesting. Is this "shoegazing" that they are going for? Time to look up!!!

    cheers,

Thanks Tom, I agree the songs sentiment is a little in his boots. The stems are nicely recorded though the Bass is somewhat distorted and one of the overheads in the kit is out of phase, nothing SONAR can not cope with.

Thank you for taking the time to have a listen and make comment and thank you for your kind words about my own stuff appreciated.

Sounds pretty good, Wook.   Nice presence, width and punch.   I think the lead vocal may be a little too present, but that's completely subjective.   Overall nice work though.

This sounds like a good mix experience...

    hey wook,
    this mix sounds good!

i think the comment about it being hot,
is directly related to the way the STEMS were recorded, only...

they seem to have very little dynamic range,
as if they were all compressed and limited,
but this is a 'modern' sound,
and working with what you have, i thought it was a very straightforward mix.
    nice job.

Wookie, I refer you to the comments I made for synkotron and sausy1981, which are somewhat echoed by Batsbrew above.  I'm guessing the source materiel is somewhat bright to begin with?  Yours is the mix that would give me ear fatigue less.  It's drier and more in your face, and you've managed not to squash the hell out of it.  Congratulations to all of you that entered this contest!

Nice mix wookie, I went with a wetter vocal but that's just different tastes, I like how you gave the acoustic lead guitar some prominence, it made sense in context. Intimate vibe going on in this one, I like it. Good Job man.

Thanks Bat appreciate your ears my friend.  Your assessment of the stems is right on the nail, the distorted guitar was/is just that distorted.

Thanks Lynn, the stems were strange a mix of Mono and Stereo even on the Kit, the snare bottom and the Tom's are stereo, Two of the 5 Vocal stems are stereo. All the Orch/synths stems are Stereo and 2 of the eight guitar stems are stereo as well.  The Bass is a mono DI stem which also had some distortion that needed to be softened off.

Thanks Andrew you did a nice job too

Going back and listening again, I think you had the best acoustic sound in the intro.  It was less trebly. I'm sure that's subjective but it is what I noticed.

That console emulator set to the N type does wonders and all Buses had the Tape emulator on as well.

Thanks for going back for a second listen Warren.
