NOT ELECTRONIC STUFF!!!

Erm... Sorry for the title of this post, but there are peeps here who simply do not like my music just because it is classed as Electronic.

Anyways... About what you are about to receive...

I've been playing guitar since I was about 19, and I'm 55 now, but I've never put in the right amount of time into my practise and therefore my skills are very limited. Timing has always been a big problem and one of the main reasons why you will never normally hear me playing.

But I am eager to try and get over this, and at the same time, try to embark upon a different style of music.

I have just uploaded a very rough start of a project to my SoundCloud page. It is just under two minutes and finishes rather prematurely, as it would, cos it's "work in progress."

I suppose I am putting it out there to see if peeps think I'm wasting my time with this project. I consider a lot of peeps here to be my friend, so I trust what you say, and if peeps think I should stick to what I know best, then that is what I will do. My PRS will go back to hanging on the wall...

The mix is quite rough too. I think the bass guitar could come up a bit and the kick is too prominent at the moment. I need to work on so much stuff yet, all the great stuff you guys have been offering much guidance on.

I'm kinda getting nervous now, cos I'm going to post a link, and being the generally negative type, I know this is going to cause a few howls of laughter amongst the ranks.........

There... I did it...

    Oh... I forgot.

There are some synths used on this track, but only at the very start, to aid in the "explosion."

I play guitar and bass guitar.

Drums are BFDEco, programmed by me, as usual, and are very basic at the moment.

I have just upgraded to Melodyne editor, so I had a go at fixing some timing issues with the two clean guitars.

All other timing issues, of which there were many, were fixed by the "traditional" method of dragging transients around. Plus the odd split and move, where that worked.

The second lead part took many takes, so that's a splicing together of all those takes. I hope it doesn't sound too bad.

I used Guitar Rig 5 on the guitars, and same on the bass guitar (just for a clean amp sim).

    That's it I think...

Hi Andy, this is nothing to be embarressed about. I've posted far worse myself; )  My tactic for hiding my terrible timing is to put a bit of delay on it and loads of reverb ; ).  The clean guitar is a bit dark imho. This is definately something to keep working on. Sounds a bit like pink Floyd meets Mike Oldfield for a jam.

Phew... Thanks Rik... That's one thumbs up at least

Is this something I should fix? Or does dark = good? I know I might be a mile off with the tone, which will need more EQ'ing.

This is definately something to keep working on.

Thanks again Rik... Give me some hope that

Hi Andy, to my ears the clean guitar is a bit to dark, i'd like a bit more sparkle  so you can hear the chords a bit better.

Yea Andy, I really like where this is going. I'm thinking what you perceive as timing issues is actually natural human syncopation. With a more natural drum track, I think this will be super cool. Nice tone and style on display here used in a very musical way. Salute from a fellow PRS tickler.

    Hi Andy,

I am going to comment first then go listen to the track...lol

You said: "I suppose I am putting it out there to see if peeps think I'm wasting my time with this project. I consider a lot of peeps here to be my friend, so I trust what you say, and if peeps think I should stick to what I know best, then that is what I will do. My PRS will go back to hanging on the wall..."

Take the PRS off the wall an put it in you hand an play until you like what you get and tell all of us to shut up and listen...lol The PRS will never sound good hanging on the wall. And no it is not a waste of time to learn something new no matter how long it takes or what it sounds like starting out.

I, like a lot of people on this site like what you do and are here to support you in all of your learning new stuff. I know a note or two but I do not know how to create what you create. I am not Andy and Andy is what makes you special.

    Now I go listen.

    Cheers,

    Billy

EDIT: OK no more of "I don't know how to play guitar from you"...don't make me come over there...lol

This is a great start and the lead is cool. If something gets out of time and you just can not get it in time no matter how many times you re play it, then that is what quantize is for. Timing takes time to learn and the only known way to fix timing issues is to play slow and build up speed SLOWLY...this can not be done with the PRS hanging on the wall...lol

Just do it Andy, and I am here to help you any way I can, so if you need help with the guitar just ask.

    Cheers Mate,

    Billy

I thought I posted on this.  Gettin' old, losin it.  I agree, there is nothing to be embarrased or apologetic for.  it's a cool track that will only improve with possibly some vocals.  I didn't get bored and that's big!

    Hi Grant,

Thanks for having a quick listen

I'd fixed most of the bad timing issues but felt that the ones that were left would pass scrutiny. I think you're right, in that once I get time, I'll go and humanise that drum track a bit, which is a long way off yet. The drums that are there at the moment was just for jamming to really.

I know of S-Gear and it sounds like good stuff. I'll have another look and see what it is going to cost me to get into S-Gear.

I've also got TH-2, but I tend to go to just a couple of patches in GR-5... Especially for the 80's fuzz guitar...

Haha! Thanks Warren... That IS a good sign LOL!

I wasn't considering vocals to be honest, but that's only because I cannot sing for toffees

And so far, it's only two minutes long. So I was thinking that this would be at least 6 ~ 8 minutes long in the end...

    Still early days

Certainly nothing to be ashamed of Andy! A very promising start indeed which should pan out to be a nice track when its done.

Wasn't keen of the clean guitar sound near the beginning, but apart from that all is shaping up nicely. Look forward to hearing the end result

    Thanks Chris

The idea of the clean guitar is, I wanted that big explosion at the beginning to be followed with an immediate period of calm, which would then lead into some riffage, cos I like riffage LOL.

Is it the clean guitar section itself, or just the guitar tone?

    cheers

It was just the tone - sounded a little but too 'DI' to me, felt like it needed a bit of amp speaker and room around it.

"Dark" as another poster commented - needs a little something but I'm you can work it out in the mix

Ah... Great Chris, cos I much wanted to leave that bit in if I could. I'll have a play with the tone a bit more. It may be that I've taken too much out with some drastic EQ'ing... And you're right... It's straight DI, so I need to look at that. Perhaps consider getting S-Gear, as Tom says above, or dust off my under-used TH-2.

Thanks again for your time Chris

Never a waste of time to expand one's horizons, Andy. Go for it!

I, too, have guitars on the wall that I don't play because I'm not good enough at it. I also have hand percussion that I rarely use because a sampled tambourine or shaker is so much more convenient. I use sampled "oohs" because it's time consuming to sing them myself. There are so many reasonable reasons not to play a real instrument. So kudos for getting off your arse and doing it. Admiration, man.

One reason to favor synths and samples over real instruments is that the latter requires more effort to achieve a desired tone. As stated above, that clean rhythm guitar is dull. OK, they actually said "dark", because it's more polite. I'll stick with "dull". Brighten it, double-track it, add a subtle delay or chorus, whatever it takes.

Then don't forget to add some synths.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Yeah, I've been listening to them again today, and I know what peeps know now, so I think I know what I'm going to do to fix that.

Well... I was hoping to go slightly "prog" with this... So it would be rude not to have some synths on board

    cheers

    Hi Andy,

I think it's absolutely OK if somebody likes your (mine, his) music and somebody don't - in most cases it's a good sign that music is distinctive :)
Trying to incorporate genres and styles and instruments is a way to create something new, uncharted...
I think this WIP piece is a nice start, keep it going :)
Personally I so love rock guitar, combined with strings, ambient textures etc. Did it a few times already and sure will do more :D

    Cheers,
    Julian

There was nothing I heard that required an apology.  On the contrary, it sounded quite promising.  Keep working on it.  Guitars and synths sound cool together.
