Is anyone using an Solid State Drive with SONAR?

I am wondering if anyone is using SONAR X3 or Pro on a computer that has a Solid State Drive installed.  I need to up-grade my hard drive and I am considering an SSD, so I wanted to ask anyone using one, how it performs?

    AWESOME improvement - highly recommended!!

While you're at it, add as much RAM as you can afford.
    Assuming you're running 64-bit:
8GB seems to be the recommended minimum these days; 16GB or more definitely helps!

Also, if you have the space and $$ to drop in a 2nd SSD for instrument samples, it will be a HUGE load time performance improvement for sample-based instruments!

I've been using an SSD drive running Sonar for about three years, and I can't imagine ever going back to a HDD.
Never had any problems, drive related.
I'm in the process of cloning my 120 GB SSD to move my system to a newer 500 GB SSD.

That would depend on what you mean. It boots really quick and you can copy files to it quickly. I like it and have a larger drive I plan to use to replace the one I have which is a few years old now. I don't think they'll do anything to help latency if you're recording or performing, unless you have a lot of tracks.

Just this afternoon - received a Samsung 850 Evo SSD 500GB (130 GBP), used their software to painlessly clone the system and up and running, just a few hours operation. Sonar was fine, although I had to reinstall ADrums. A couple of other programs need some re-registration, but apart from that it was amazingly easy. The speed of booting and launching is lightning fast. Go for it!

(Edit) If you do go for Samsung and their software, the process seems to hang at 100% cloning; it hasn't hung, just wait for ten minutes or so ( I think it's validating). As suggested above, there is no intrinsic audio performance improvement in the SSD operation. I'm also sticking with Win 8.1 for the  time being until I'm sure Win10, Sonar and my audio i/f are ok. At the moment here seems to be an issue with my Steinberg drivers for Win10.

SSDs = huge boost in disk access times. I have Windows and applications on one and spool audio to another. If I used sample libraries I'd add a third.

Boot time is in the order of 10 seconds to Windows log-on screen and applications load far faster than from HDDs. The seek time is also much faster which makes accessing multiple small files (e.g. samples) incredibly fast.

I may do that too. Then again, the drive Jim put in, and configured, in the Studiocat runs FAST already. I guess instant is better, after all.. I don't have all minute you know. I'm happy to see the prices coming down on them.

I can't help but wonder what will be next. What computing and DAWs will be like 10 years from now. By then I will need all the help I can get!

Well for me it is a choice between Samsung 840 Pro and a SanDisk Extreme Pro. I won’t be cloning my hard drive as I am just going to do a clean install of Windows 7. And reinstall everything else.

I don't use it for my system drive, but I have a 1 TB Samsung Pro for my larger orchestral libraries (Vienna Dimension Strings, Hollywood Strings, Vienna Special Edition, etc.) and the performance improvement changed my life.  Those libraries were not even usable from a spinning drive.

The SSD bought me two things: 1-These samples stream from the disk so I was having major drop-outs and other serious issues until I went to an SSD.  2-And, although this point is more a matter of convenience, a matrix of string sounds now loads in 3-4 seconds instead of 10-12 minutes.

Another plus for SSDs is in laptops, and not just for speed.

A fairly common laptop failure is caused by people not realising that they aren't really supposed to be moved around much while running. So they get moved or dropped while accessing an HDD and once in a while a disk head hits a platter.

SSDs are immune to that kind of problem.

And they're silent and use less power than an HDD.

Yes, extra bonus that SSD's can run cooler, and therefore quieter . . . not so much fan noise, due to no moving mechanical parts.

Are they now good for audio drives too?

I was gifted a new nachine with 4/500G SSD which I'm planning on building into my next DAW...

But i have been under the impression that they were not good for streaming multitrack audio?

I'd love to find out that i could use all 4 and be that much quieter too!

Not to derail the OP of this thread, but the topuc is right...

    Thanks...

My DAW has several SSDs in it, it works great for me. One for the OS, one for my projects, one for temporary files, and one for samples.  As always, YMMV.

To the OP. I think you'll find far more of us using SSD than you might have first thought. For many of us we have our Operating System and programs on there while other use them to load sample libraries where streaming needs the fastest throughput. And of course for some they've gone SSD all the way. I'd need 2 TB of drives to do that so it ain't happening because f the cost. I make do with just one 250 GIG SSD for the OS, programs and plugins with all my other data including sample libraries scattered across 3 other drives.

I'll add myself to  the the list of happy people who are putting SSD into all my computers.( I have 6 )
Not often mentioned is the fact they use way less power and are quiet.
There is no need to buy a huge power supply really.
But I am using the common practice of a SSD OS drive and al else on large TB 7200 drives.

I also re did 2 laptops an ASUS eee net book, and a Sony Vaio both from 2008,,  wow that was a huge improvment to boot up and all proccessing. There is also a small improvement to battery life as a bonus.

Only negitive so far is I have a few IT tech friends and 1 of the 3 is saying there are dependability issues. I have not seen any hint of this myself and this one person must be getting the info from tech forums I guess. That's why I have stuck with the EVO series as I've not heard any neg reviews so far,,, just the firmware bug which was an easy fix.

Yes - I purchased a Dell XPS 8700 from Costco, which came with a 32 GB SSD Cache drive.
I am far from a computer whiz, but (after cruising the computer websites),  I was able to replace the 32 GB drive with a 240 GB from Crucial and designate it as my root drive.  Windows loads very quickly!

Using a 250 GB SSD as my C: drive for several years now, but now it's time to go 1 TB with a SSD for my C: drive.   I have other 2 and 3 TB HDD drives on the computer for Samples and saving projects and other stuff for using with Sonar.

At least make your Main drive a SSD, it will make starting Windows and Sonar extremely fast and as said before, get as much ram as your MOBO can handle.

Re: Is anyone using an Solid State Drive with SONAR? 2015/08/04 01:58:18 (permalink)
I have had a number of different SSD configurations, in several computers, over the past few years.

When they first came out, I had two 512 GB SSD's in one machine, but six months in one of those bit the dust, and each of them ran around $850 at the time.  I took store credit on the failed drive, and sold the other, and went back to 7,200 SATA III internal drives for a while - and also was able to pick up 2 nice HDTV's, from the store credit I had received.

After some time, I invested in a couple of SSD purchases, and began using those as primary drives in all computers I built for myself, as well as those I built for others.

I have been running 3 computers for music computers for myself, with 1 primary computer, having the specs you can see in my signature at the bottom of this post.  My 2nd computer also has an SSD as its primary drive, and a couple of 7,200 SATA III internal drives for content/projects and for samples.  My 3rd computer is one I use for testing out software updates, for Windows, as well as for application software updates - Komplete 8 Ultimate, Arturia V Collection, Sonar, etc..., prior to applying validated updates onto my primary desktop and my 2nd computer (which is a laptop and used when I go mobile).

I LOVE having SSD drives for primary drives, but continue to use 7,200 rpm SATA III internal drives for any additional drives, due to cost, and because they cause no performance bottlenecks in this configuration.  The primary drive (SSD) contains only Windows and all applications, but all user libraries (documents, downloads, pictures, videos, etc., are moved by changing the Location tab in each folder's Properties.so that they all live on a secondary drive that is non-SSD).  On THAT secondary drive, I also place Cakewalk Content and Cakewalk Projects, and use per-project audio sub-folders within each project's Project Folder.  I use a 3rd drive to hold nothing but sample content, so that projects really quickly load up big chunks of samples into memory when loading a Sonar project, and then they stream data quite nicely from that point.

The additional thing that I believe REALLY helps it all work well is having a BUNCH of memory ni each computer.  My primary computer has 32 GB of main memory, and both other computers each have 16 GB of memory in them.

My next build, which will replace my current primary computer, will have 64 GB of memory, a 250 GB SSD as a primary drive, a 2 TB 7,200 RPM SATA III internal drive for Cakewalk Content and Cakewalk Projects, and 2 512 GB SSD drives for splitting sample libraries for performance purposes.  Those 2 SSD drives for the sample libraries will mostly be read-only in terms of actual use, since they will mostly be for streaming samples and for nothing else.

This computer will also have 2 external 4 TB USB 3 7,200 RPM SATA 3 drives for backup purposes.

I LOVE the performance of SSD drives, for both a Primary drive, and for sample content drives, but get great bang for the buck with great performance using non=SSD regular 2 TB 7,200 RPM internal SATA III drives for user libraries, Cakewalk Content, and Cakewalk Projects.

Again - the other piece to the above is massive amounts of memory, to keep a lot of sample content in memory, where it is at its speediest for playback.

I hope some of the above info is helpful for you.
