Sonar X2 Producer with Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 on Windows 10 Not Working
Updated to Windows 10 and now Sonar won't work with this interface even with the latest drivers. Anyone else having this problem?

Can you see it in your Preferences > Audio - Devices list? Is it selected? First thing to check.

Oh yes. It's listed and checked on. Just says it's unable to load the audio device. I've confirmed the Focusrite works just fine with everything else on my system.

If being used for system sounds, be sure the "exclusive modes" are unchecked in system properties. Another program most likely has exclusive control of it.
ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

Try uninstalling mixcontrol, rebooting, reinstalling. Then reset everything within mix control.

I agree with Mettelus. Sounds like something else is hogging the device. Do you have other programs running when this happens? If not it could simply be Windows Sounds hogging the device (which is best totally disabled on a DAW). I don't use 10 so I don't know how you'd turn that off. Of course the other thing Mettelus is saying about "exclusive" stuff would keep it from happening even if other stuff is running... as I am starting to slowly learn about. Thing is if you just upgraded to Windows 10 it likely totally fracked up any previous settings, optimizations and tweaks you previously did in Windows to make your audio stuff work. I'd go through and figure out how to set things back to how they were. MS being "helpful" with their whacked out default settings... as usual. Cheers.

Great tip. Mine were checked on and I unchecked them but this did not solve the problem. The error still comes up as follows: "Unable to open audio playback device. Device may not support the current project's audio format or may be in use." Sonar opens with the Focusrite 2i2 interface enable to 96khz/16bit by default. This has always worked fine prior to the Win10 update. I appreciate the help so far and I look forward to more suggestions.

That seems premature at this point. Good idea if all else fails but rather drastic and may not even be the issue.

Again it is probably occupied with system sounds (which do not match those samplerates). Check to see if Windows Sounds are enabled.

Unchecking use Windows Sounds in the OS sound settings did the trick. So Sonar will only work if there's no system sounds enabled. That's kinda ****ed but oh well.

Glad it worked and yeah it is fuxxored but that's how it goes. I don't fully understand it but I think it is simply because Windows Sounds are at a specific set samplerate and forces the soundcard to use that... which then fracks up the samplerate setting you chose for your own stuff. I think MAYBE the way around this is to allow your onboard sound to handle the system sounds and just have the interface for your audio programs. Some people here do that (BobBone is one) but I honestly can't be arsed and I don't give a crap about system sounds. Cheers and welcome to the forum.

hahaha, yeah I can't be bothered with all the carp lol. I'm fine with having my Rokits setup through my interface and having my critical audio apps work rather than fussing with OS sounds. Thanks again mate! T

Just happy to help (I have not been doing enough of that lately). Perhaps a bit of a cheater approach (I'd rather give a proper explanation which would provide decisive and informed control but I have none) but really there so much to keep track of I've gotten to the point of "make it bloody work and I'll sort out the fancy crap if it starts holding me back). In this case... I really have no love for system sounds. I don't need little beeps, squonks and strange sounding computer ladies yelling at me all the time. It's annoying and often times jarring/frightening. I hate listening to something intently with my entire pea brain focusing on something then getting blasted by some MS sound. Puts me in "fight or flight" mode for a second which is extra bizarre when you're sitting in a room totally by yourself. lulz... Cheers.

Next check the default modes in Windows for the device and set them to what you are using in SONAR. If the system is "using" the driver, SONAR cannot change the sample rate/bit depth. That pop up you are getting suggests Windows is bringing the Scarlett online (and locking it when anything accesses it), and your SONAR settings are different. If the system is allowed to use the device, be sure to set settings in Windows first.

You need to download the beta driver from Focusrite's website. You may also have to update the firmware. I have an 18i20 and it works great on Win 10 Pro. Just do a search on their site for win 10 drivers. Should get you there. HTH, Brian
