[SOLVED] Keyboard shortcut to force Sonar to re-load/re-read the Master.ins file?

Michael at MidiQuest has told me the current version of Sonar (I have Platinum) has a shortcut to make Sonar re-read the Master.ins file after I've changed the contents of a synth with MidiQuest, which would allow Sonar to refresh the patch names automatically from MidiQuest's patch bank name server without my needing to shut down Sonar and re-start it again.

Does anyone know of such a keyboard shortcut, or of any method to re-load the Master.ins file?

Thanks!

Just hit the Panic button!
There is a description for X2 at http://www.cakewalk.com/D...nstrument_Defs.04.html
The relevant section is:

To reload instrument definitions
Users of MIDI librarian programs need the ability to update SONAR’s instrument definitions in real-time, without having to close and restart SONAR.
When the Reset (Panic) button is pressed, SONAR closes and reopens the instrument manager to reload settings from Master.ins and Instrmap.ini.
Any changes made to patch names or other instrument definitions are reflected immediately.

FWIW you may need to re-enable the audio engine after hitting the panic button.

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

Oh, bummer!

Apparently it is not working as it used to in X2/X3 now in Sonar Artist/Professional/Platinum, which may be why they removed the notice on its Instrument Definition page concerning that feature.

What I am having to do as a workaround is to enter the Instrument definitions page in preferences, then go into "Define" and re-import the Master.ins file, re-selecting the instrument(s) I desire possessing the updated patch lists. Only then does the patch list update in Sonar with the refreshed list. Not terrible, but I'm surprised I need to jump through so many hoops.

In the past, the Panic Button trick and even simply shutting down Sonar and re-starting it worked, but not now.

That wasn't a problem in my case.

I am hitting the panic button beneath the counter window, btw, just in case there is another somewhere I do not see that would actually re-load the Master.ins file.

Thanks, though!

I believe it is still in the current documentation http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=SONAR&language=3&help=Instrument_Defs.04.html. Often removing the version from an old help URL will open the current help page. Whether the feature works I cannot say, I have not used instrument definitions.

There is no link to that page from the Sonar Artist/Professional/Platinum Instrument definition pages, so from my experience I have to believe the feature no longer exists the way it used to.

It's working ok for me.

I got into Platinum, then edited something in my Master.ins, which for me, is located at

    c:\Users\Tom Parker\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum\Master.ins

then hit the Reset button, and I immediately saw the change.

I then undid the change in Master.ins, hit Reset, and again saw the change.

I know there are several different Master.ins files around, are you sure you're editing the one in AppData\Roaming ?

I think you may have hit it, Tom. The one I was using was in the C:\Cakewalk Content\Sonar Platinum\instruments folder. I'll give the AppData one a go and get back to you!

The one in your user directory is the active version. The master copy is in "C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum" and is copied into your user directory during personalization. AFAIK, the one in Cakewalk Content is not used at all.

Tom,

THAT was IT! :-)

The AppData version of Master.ins was the one I needed to be using. I'm not certain at all what the one at C:\Cakewalk Content\Sonar Platinum\instruments is there for, but there you go!

Thanks, Tom and everyone else who helped!

I could not find a shortcut key or binding to the Panic button, but I can live without that! :-)

I'll post this working solution at the MidiQuest forum as well, and mark this one SOLVED!
